Okay, first off, not everyone going through an airport has to do the 3-D photo thing. Last time I was at an airport, I didn't even see it get used. Second off, it's preferable to being actually strip-searched, since this way no one touches you. Third off, the 3-D images are hardly provocative, and I doubt they're all saved to some hard-drive the employees can always access, they're very likely temporary images for temporary viewing purposes only.
But look at me, attempting to talk sense. Silly, I know.

Yes, I'm quite sure, having volunteered as a counselor for SAVA. Seeing reactions ranging from fairly minor hysteria all the way through PTSD and suicidal depression pretty much convinced me of the toll these things could take. Thank you so very much for asking. Maybe next you could ask some veterans if it's really such a big deal to be shot at and fear for their lives, or see their buddies being blown to bits, and if they aren't overreacting when they wake up in full battle mode after years of being out of combat, and shouldn't they snap out of it and get over that whole little issue. I'm sure your take on such things would be widely appreciated among the traumatized.

Why? Why would they keep them? Under what circumstances do you imagine a reason for them to be kept? They're for a very fleeting purpose, the same general purpose frisking once served. Even if they were, fortunately there is nothing to connect you to it. I suppose the one way to tell is to see if it has a hard-drive or other digital storage capacity. If there is no storage, then they can't be saved, no matter how much an individual or agency might want to.

I can imagine a few extremely weak reasons why they might be officially saved

1) For specific review
However, if a particular flight were to be hijacked and/ or blown up, there is nothing to connect any particular image with that flight. In addition, not all people go through the scanner. So they would have to review all luggage scans for that day as well, as well as all 'sniffer' security, just to see if there was a potential something they might have missed. And that doesn't count the checked luggage, most of which is NOT scanned.
2) For training purposes
3) For statistical analysis at a later date.
4) As a 'if we have data we might as well save it' fetish. Things can be that way.

While I can imagine reasons (no matter how weak) to officially save these images, unless there is a policy AND mechanism to save then, AND they are accessible to the people working the scan, they won't be accessed for 'personal' reasons. At least, not at that level of security.

No, I DON'T fly - I won't get on a fucking airplane cause the TSA goons bring out the absolute worst level of "KILL THE FASCIST" rabidity and I would be unable to restrain myself if I had to watch even one more of them slowly and blatantly feel up some guys girlfriend under the pretense of searching her, all the while grinning at him and and DARING him to make an issue of it.

That was the last fucking straw - after being dragged in for the third degree two days before that simply because my "public record" (your papers please, citizen!) was a little slim for their liking, and then had to play that whole bullshit if-you've-got-nothing-to-hide two step till my fucking lawyer showed up and put paid to it, complete with, as USUAL for dealing with the powers that be, semi-veiled and completely heartfelt threats.

Rule of the gun is what it is, let's not pretend otherwise.

And so there went eighty bucks since the bastards made me miss my flight and the airline just shrugged, and the second attempt, standing in line and watching that fucking brownshirt.. *hisss*

I walked back to the airline counter, shredded the ticket into little bits, tossed it over the counter and wished them in hell, walked out.

I will NEVER fly on a commercial flight again as long as the airlines are willing to tolerate such complete and unrepentant slime abusing their customers, and not one bloody dime, by intent.

And then the mother fucking government comes and takes it from my by force and threat (taxes) and gives it to them any damned way.

So no, you DON'T have a choice, even if you refuse to do business with them, you STILL pay for it - and woe unto them that I have enough contacts in the related industries to make sure they feel the chill wind of my revenge just a little when contracts are negotiated, and that goes for them car rental companies selling their customers personal info down the river without even a twitch as well.

Riding in the back of a refitted airshow plane for a long, uncomfortable, cramp ridden time was still preferable to having to watch and tolerate something that is offensive to every part of me that respects the idea of america, and being forced to finance it whether I want to or not offends me even more.

Why is it that no one ever said that they didn't have the right to scanning or searching baggage? And if some burly creepy dude said he'd have to frisk me, I would politely request that such searches be done by a female, in keeping with expected and generally correct procedures; unless no other security personel are on duty, most policies dictate same-sex searches. If such a reasonable request was refused, I would offer to leave, go to the end of the line, and try another checkpoint, or see if I could find someone boss-like to complain to about possible harassment.
I'm sorry if this all seems too reasonable to be true, but in my experience with security and law enforcement types, there usually is some recourse if you're willing to cut through a little red tape. Don't get me wrong, red tape is a bitch, but I'd rather deal with it than continue being harassed.

That coulda gone far uglier than anyone realizes.
