... and before anyone else says it, yeah, it was just a TV show. Our world is guilty of much greater sins than dismissing great storytelling. But for me, the disregard and rejection of Firefly symbolizes much of what is wrong with the world - it's backassward priorities, it's preoccupaion with crap, it's pandering to the lowest common denominator,

I suppose I should just let go...

It's on my list of grievances. That and the fact that I will never come to terms with Nathan Fillion as anyone other than Captain Mal.

Oh yeah, I felt it, and all considering, I haven't been around near as long as some of you other browncoats.

So what brings this up? Was it the Browncoat politics thread? Talking about all the ways it appeals to various groups along the political spectrum does kind of make one a little nostalgic.

I'm still hoping that something might happen when Fox no longer owns the rights in 2012.

And the funny thing is, every thing I hear is that he's seriously one of the nicest guys ever, not at all the bitter sort, and that Joss originally had someone else in mind. But could you imagine anyone else?

Or any other character played by any other actor or actress? They just worked, clicked instantly. I've been reading the companions, and cast and crew say it over and over. Magic, they call it. And that's what came out, too. Pure magic.

I did read some of that. But the real impetus was actually my girlfriend pointing me to a clip from Castle where Nathan Fillion is, essentially, dressed up as Mal for Halloween:

Quote:

Daughter: "Didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?"

Castle/Mal: "So?"

Daughter: "So, don't you think you should move on?"

Castle/Mal: "I like it!"

I dunno. Just got me thinking.

I'm not a big fan of Castle, but that bit was cute - and bittersweet.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I saw that ep. I happen to like Castle, but it's not anywhere near as good as Firefly.

BTW- Morena and Alan are on V.

And, it's not Firefly!

I'm sliding toward acceptance. I have a pretty negative feeling towards TV, so I'd like to see Joss tell his stories elsewhere. Online eps of the show could be filmed, they'd have to be low budget, but it might be interesting

I don't believe that I have the right to feel bitter at Firefly's cancellation because I was not watching it when it aired in 2002. I came on board right before the BDM was released, after reading about Serenity and Firefly in a flattering 2005 article in Starlog Magazine. I had not bought a Starlog Mag in 15 years, but I bought it when a hurricane in Fla. left me without power for a week, and with not much else to do except read. Only the original watchers of the show can feel the true bitterness. The rest of us who came late to the party really have no say in something that was decided before we got involved. I look at it from the perspective that I'm damn lucky to have found it at all.

Internet-only series *have* been showing increasing viability and profitability... And Joss already did have one successful foray. I've given up hope on Dollhouse opening any new windows, but with the internet as a possible medium, who knows what could happen in 2012.

I think I heard the most expensive part of Firefly was the set? -Coming, in 2012, the crew of Serenity crashes onto the scene... of SUBURBAN CALIFORNIA, and your imagination. Special thanks to the USS Waddell.

Another, perhaps less horror inducing idea, is that maybe post movie the crew might have split up to some degree, so each episode might consist of one to three of the original crew, and some supporting actors. Dr. Horrible succeeded because it only had to pay three starring actors, a small supporting cast, and the production crew. And because it was Joss.

In any case, I don't think there aren't options, I think right now the problem is the legal rights to the franchise issue.

They did experience more trauma, which probably entitles them to feel worse, but I think that regret and annoyance can abound aplenty that the series was canceled from anyone who enjoys it. I know I feel that way.

Yes it "abounds aplenty", as it continues to be a subject of much discussion.

At the world? No. At Fox? Hell YES ! At the American viewer? Somewhat--if they'd been given half a chance to find it! At TV? SERIOUSLY--given how many totally inane, offensive, stupid, ridiculous, pathetic, disgusting (add adjectives at your will) TV shows go on and on ad infinitum, and the single best one ever to come along, in my opinion, slumbers in its grave.

I still live in hope, and always will, unfortunately for me...

"Bittersweet" is DEFINITELY the word for my feelings watching Nathan's "call out" on Castle...sigh...

Byte,

Yes, I was aware of that. OTOH, there's a matter of budget to be considered. The amount of cash required per minute of firefly was pretty high. I think it was 2.5 million/ep. It's not going to be the same, but I could really do without the hand of the MSM, and would be willing to put up with a little Dr. Who level of effects for a good story.

River,

Which Hurricane? My brother met his wife when they were trapped together in a hurricane. Humans, given long enough, there's only one way to pass the time ;)

Niki,

Not mad at Fox personally at all. I'm more irritated at them for clinging to this looney line of glenn beck and co as opposed to sensible conservatives. I get really irritated at people who would rather try to shape the agenda than deliver the message, in fiction and non-fiction. But I'm not going to get upset at them for pouring millions of dollars down a hole for Firefly.

There was a curious story after it was cancelled. Supposedly, Whedon went to Murdoch and complained, and Murdoch handed him $25 million and said "go finish your story." Murdoch told FOX that they would make it back on DVD sale, but never fully expecting that they actually *would*. So no, it was fair. Someone at Fox sabotaged the show by placement, but it wasn't right wing agendamasters (I mean, Fox airs the Simpsons)

I'll only reply "oh, gawd, don't get me started!", as we've been over this topic already.

But I am still angry; I suppose more at the mentality that things better pay off QUICK or dump 'em, and the frequency with which those holding the moneybags are so willing to cowtow to the lowest possible denominator, especially if it's cheap. Reality shows...I won't go there...

It was Wilma. I was actually one of the fortunate ones who got power back in a week. Some went 3 weeks.
