Pretty horrible.

If only there had been someone there with a gun, all this could have been avoided.....

Yup, kinda bizarre. Looks like at least one shooter was an Army major AND one of their mental health professionals who helps soldiers deal with PTSD. Which makes this seem a li'l ironic. But more tragic.

Latest news says 12 dead, 31 injured, maybe 3 shooters, at least one of them dead (Major Malik Nadal Hassan, according to latest reports). Seems he may have been deployed to The Sandbox, maybe more than once. Maybe more than twice.

Perhaps. But shootings like this always bring about a certain contingent saying that "if only folks were armed, it could have been stopped". Well, we have here a case that adds a whole new level to that discussion.

I'll admit there was a hint of snark, but I think it's worth discussing.

I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on military bases, I don't know what restrictions there are on who can be armed and where. Given that this was a graduation ceremony, they may well have chosen a group that would not be armed, I don't know.

Just tossing it out there for those more informed than I to chew over.

Hell, growing up in a military family, growing up on and around military bases, I never thought it unusual to see folks with weapons just about everywhere. News is acting like an armed man on a military base would really get noticed, or set off alarms, and that's not the way I remember it at all.

An Army psychiatrist about to be deployed to combat zones overseas killed 11 soldiers and wounded 31 others on Thursday afternoon at Fort Hood in Texas, the authorities said. The gunman, who was identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was then killed by police forces.

Mr. Hasan, 39, who had been promoted in May and previously worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, was about to be deployed to Iraq, according to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Her spokesman, Jeff Sadoski, said Major Hasan was upset about his pending deployment.

“There were several eyewitness accounts that there was more than one shooter,” said Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, the commanding officer at Fort Hood.

Two other soldiers were initially taken into custody, but were later released, Christopher Haug, a base spokesman, told CNN. Mr. Haug said that another soldier has since been detained.

Military bases are the most UNdefended targets I've ever seen. In USA and Europe, most bases, even nuke bases, are wide open to the public, without any security checkpoints, even flight lines. Less than 1% of soldiers are armed, and they are trained to NEVER shoot an officer, and only kiss their boots instead.

Compare that to the US Revolutionary War, where all soldiers (private militia) were REQUIRED to shoot at the feet of ALL officers, on crowded public streets, as a form of salute...

Ah, the Good Ole Days.

Well, most of the bases I've been on, outside of the firing range or actual field exercises - you could go a whole career and never touch a weapon, and beyond the firing range no one has any live ammo neither.

This actually presented a substantial problem in the unit I was with because when the only weapon training whatsoever is 30 rounds at the range PER YEAR, skills in that respect tend to be lacking - I wouldn't trust most non-infantry soldiers to know which end the bang comes out of, myself.

Of course, given our quagmire and the tremendous amount of remedial training that was required for deployments, that's prolly not as bad as it was.

A situation like this, it'd take anywhere from 10-40 min for the MPs to GET live ammunition, even in an emergency, at least on Ft Lee, Va - that much I can tell you, although one might get lucky if a nearby unit has a CO whos "assistant" (aka enforcer) is armed, and some of them are.

There's also that without visible command authority to hold their hand, no one is likely to take independent action which might have made this less of a mess, and our training methods don't leave guys wrapped too tight anyhow, so a swift, coordinated response to something like this wasn't likely in the first place.

I have no information at this time - but I did note that the IMMEDIATE reaction of both the media and political factors was "Hey, he has an arab sounding name, maybe we can hang this on radical islam, yay!"
Which both sickens me, and gives perhaps a hint of what set the guy off, since his service record is NO REL PREF (No Religious Preference), which is often interpreted by other troops as non-christian aka "evil".
We had some serious problems in Ft Jackson and Ft Lee related to that, since the US Army has a heavy bent towards mainstream protestent christianity, and such factors were often taken into account when they should not have been.

There's also likely a factor of secondary caregiver trauma, as mental health personnel treating PTSD tend to suffer a high degree of psychological casualty themselves - and whoever dumped him on Ft Hood from Walter Reed might well have soft-shoed their assessment in order to be well rid of him if he was starting to crack.

Right now, we do not know - and given that first reaction and the bullshit ass-covering spin cycle likely to follow, we might not ever know the facts.

That's all I can say to it, at the moment.

Reports thus far seem to indicate this. From what I've heard, he was in ROTC, military paid for six years of education, and ever since Iraq started he's been afraid of deployment. Given what Army p-docs (our shortened term for psychiatrists) see and hear, I'm not surprised. Also, it's absolutely true that mental-health problems, suicide and other things have a higher incidence in p-docs than in many others.

I've heard that he was a nonviolent person, never shot a gun outside the firing range and didn't even like doing that. It sounds like the idea of going to Iraq snapped him, which wouldn't surprise me. He hears the worst of it, and they estimate 20% of soldiers returning from duty suffer from PTSD.

I haven't heard any news saying an armed man would be anything special on a base, and they seem to have determined he was the only one involved. No doubt we'll learn more in time; apparently the army is being very close-mouthed about it at present.

Interestingly, someone on the website I run posted an article from the NY Times today that read in part:
Quote:

In September, the Army announced that it would spend $300,000 to study the impact of pairing psychiatric service dogs like Jet with soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder. Both the House and Senate have recently passed bills that would finance the training and placement of these dogs with veterans.
I find that an encouraging development; for so long the military didn't even ACKNOWLEDGE PTSD a lot of the time, and I don't know if treatment for it has improved since then...?

The article, by the way, is really neat...it's about dog intelligence and assistance dogs, and some of it is pretty amazing. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/weekinreview/01kershaw.html?_r=1

According to the news conference with the commanding general, the shooter is alive but in the hospital. And he never has deployed.

The person that shot him was a female first responder. She originally was thought to be dead but is alive.

This is what happens when you employ radical islamics to do the jobs of Americans

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, was born in Virginia to parents who moved to the US from a Palestinian town near Jerusalem.

He was described as a devout Muslim - a local imam told the Washington Post that he attended daily prayers at a mosque when he worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC

Sudden Jihad Syndrome

get this on a mug
The tendency among supposedly Westernized Muslims living in the United States to unexpectedly lash out violently in an act of self-initiated (and usually small scale) Islamic terrorism.

Also abbreviated to “SJS” or “S.J.S.” Examples include Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar who drove his SUV into a crowd at the University of North Carolina in 2006, Naveed Alzal Haq who shot people at a Jewish Federation Center in Seattle also in 2006, Hesham Mohammed Hadayet who murdered people at the El Al terminal in the Los Angeles Airport in 2002 — among many others.

In all of these instances, the perpetrators had no known direct connection to any established group, and because of this the authorities inevitably refrain from describing their actions as “terrorism” — hence the sarcastic term “Sudden Jihad Syndrome.”
CAIR spokesman: "Jihad means one's own INNER struggle. You are purposely misrepresenting the teachings of Islam!"

Anyone with eyes to see: "Well, when someone breaks out with a case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome, it looks more like an OUTER conflict against random third parties."

According to the Washington Post (and cited at JihadWatch):

“Hasan attended the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring and was ‘very devout,’ according to Faizul Khan, a former imam at the center. Khan said Hasan attended prayers at least once a day, seven days a week, often in his Army fatigues. Khan also said Hasan applied to an annual matrimonial seminar that matches Muslims looking for spouses. ‘I don’t think he ever had a match, because he had too many conditions,’ Khan said.”

It’s a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. I have a niece ( sister’s child) and she and her husband and their baby are stationed at Fort Hood. He’s been deployed to Spain but she and the baby are there.

She phoned my sister yesterday saying that they were alright but on “Lock Down”. I’m sure they are as confused as everyone about this.

Turns out this Semite got his degree from the underground CIA base at Virginia Tech, then joined the Army to be a psychiatrist listenin to soldiers freaked out over killin Semite babies.

This Semite hired a lawyer to get out of deploying to Iraq. Lawyer hadn't called him back for 5 months.

This Semite told his colonel buddy that "this war is wrong" and "Semites ought to rise up and fight the aggressors." Idiot colonel thought that meant they'd rise up and help the Americans invade their own country and kill another 2.5-million Semites.

If he really was a lone Semite, damn good shootin. He's a one man killin machine, just like the Army wants killin Semite babies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Iran etc.

From what I heard on the news this morning, according to the elected paper-reader/soldier, it is the policy that medical personnel are not armed or allowed to be armed on the base. He snuck in his own weapons and went on a shooting spree in an area mostly populated with other medical personnel, ensuring a body count with a very low chance of being shot at himself.

Of course, they (The FBI) are now wheeling out 'evidence' that he was making all kinds of posts to blogs over the last six months that 'praise and encourage' suicide bombers. So you can obviously tell which way the FBI is trying to spin this whole mess.

Ft. Hood suspect reportedly shouted `Allahu Akbar'

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/gen/ap/US_Fort_Hood_Shooting.htm
l

Soldiers who witnessed the shooting rampage at Fort Hood that left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" — an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" — before opening fire, the base commander said Friday.

Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said officials had not yet confirmed that the suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, made the comment before the rampage Thursday. Hasan was among 30 people wounded in the shooting spree and remained hospitalized on a ventilator.

All but two of the injured were still hospitalized, and all were in stable condition.

Military officials were trying to piece together what may have pushed Hasan, an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress, to turn on his comrades. Cone said the 39-year-old Hasan was not known to be a threat or risk.

"I'm not aware of any problems here," said Col. Steve Braverman, the Fort Hood hospital commander. "We had no problems with his job performance."

An imam from a mosque Hasan regularly attended said Hasan, a lifelong Muslim, was a committed soldier, gave no sign of extremist beliefs and regularly wore his uniform at prayers.

The motive for the shooting wasn't clear, but Hasan was apparently set to deploy soon and had expressed some anger about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Retired Col. Terry Lee, who said he had worked with Hasan, told Fox News said Hasan had hoped President Barack Obama would pull troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq and got into frequent arguments with others in the military who supported the wars.

Braverman said at a news conference early Friday that Hasan was on deployment orders to Afghanistan. A military official later told The Associated Press that Hasan was to be deployed to Iraq. It was not immediately possible to verify the discrepancy.

The military official, who did not have authorization to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity, said Hasan had indicated he didn't want to go to Iraq but was willing to serve in Afghanistan.

A neighbor at the apartment building near Fort Hood where Hasan lived said they had recently discussed his impending deployment to Afghanistan.

"He seemed OK with it," said Edgar Booker, a 58-year-old retired soldier who now works in a cafeteria on the post. "I asked him how he felt about going over there, with their religion and everything, and he said, `It's going to be interesting.'"

Cone said authorities have not yet been able to talk to Hasan, but interviews with witnesses went through the night.

Terrorism task force agents planned to interview several of Hasan's relatives Friday, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the case.

Officials are not ruling out the possibility that some of the casualties may have been victims of "friendly fire," that in the mayhem and confusion at the shooting scene some of the responding military officials may have shot some of the victims.

The officer who shot the gunman, Kimberly Munley, also was wounded.

"She happened to encounter the gunman. In an exchange of gunfire, she was wounded but managed to wound him four times," Cone said. "It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer."

Cone said some 300 soldiers had been lined up to get shots and have their eye tested at a Soldier Readiness Center when the shots rang out. He said one soldier who had been shot told him, "I made the mistake of moving and I was shot again." The commander said survivors told him that during the rampage, soldiers "would scramble to the ground and help each other out."

Cone acknowledged that it was "counterintuitive" that a single shooter could hit so many people. But he said the massacre occurred in "close quarters.

"With ricochet fire, he was able to injure that number of people," Cone said. He said authorities were investigating whether Hasan's weapons were properly registered with the military.

The gunfire broke out around 1:30 p.m. Nearby, some soldiers were readying to head into a graduation ceremony for troops and families who had recently earned degrees.

Pastor Greg Schannep had just parked his car along the side of the theater and was about to head into the ceremony when a man in uniform approached him.

"Sir, they are opening fire over there!" the man told him. At first, he thought it was a training exercise — then heard three volleys and saw people running. As the man who warned him about the shots ran away, he could see the man's back was bloodied from a wound.

Schannep said police and medical and other emergency personnel were on the scene in an instant, telling people to get inside the theater. The post went into lockdown while a search began for a suspect and emergency workers began trying to treat the wounded. Some soldiers rushed to treat their injured colleagues by ripping their uniforms into makeshift bandages to treat their wounds.

"I was confused and just shocked," said Spc. Jerry Richard, 27, who works at the center but was not on duty during the shooting. "Overseas you are ready for it. But here you can't even defend yourself."

The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said. Their identities and the identities of the dead were not immediately released.

Friday was designated a day of mourning at Fort Hood. There also will be a ceremony at the air base to honor the dead.

For six years before reporting for duty at the Texas post in July, Hasan worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center pursuing a career in psychiatry, as an intern, a resident and, last year, a fellow in disaster and preventive psychiatry. The 39-year-old Army major received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001.

But his record wasn't sterling. At Walter Reed, he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly. And while he was an intern, Hasan had some "difficulties" that required counseling and extra supervision, said Dr. Thomas Grieger, who was the training director at the time.

Faizul Khan, a former imam at a mosque Hasan attended in Silver Spring, Md., said "I got the impression that he was a committed soldier." He said Hasan attended prayers regularly at the mosque in Silver Spring, Md., and was a lifelong Muslim. He spoke often with Hasan about Hasan's desire for a wife.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Hasan's aunt, Noel Hasan of Falls Church, Va., said he had been harassed about being a Muslim in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, and he wanted out of the Army.

"Some people can take it and some people cannot," she said. "He had listened to all of that and he wanted out of the military."

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case.

The FBI, local police and other agencies searched Hasan's apartment Thursday night after evacuating the complex in Killeen, said city spokeswoman Hilary Shine. She referred questions about what was found to the FBI. The FBI in Dallas referred questions to a spokesman who was not immediately available early Friday morning.

Sudden Outbreak of “Islamophobia” After Muslim Psycho-Killer Mows Down Fellow Soldiers

by sheikyermami on November 6, 2009
Spin, spin, spin….

Tim Blair:

Thursday’s deadly rampage raises a red flag over the issue of combat stress …

The most common disorder linked to combat stress is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can develop after exposure to one or more traumatic events that threatened or caused great physical harm.

Except that Major Nidal Malik Hasan never saw a single minute of combat; any stress he suffered was pre-traumatic. The Guardian has another diagnosis:

Hasan did not fit the classic pattern of a stressed soldier. But someone listening day after day to troops describing the tension and carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan could end up as damaged as those facing combat at first hand.

There you have it. Poor Hasan, who shot a teenage girl in the back, was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder by proxy.

Frem, something I wondered, being that this guy is a psychiatrist, is it possible he was on medication himself or that he was recommended some medication by another army doctor?

The account Jayneztown gives suggests to me that he was pretty stable before this event. WTF happened?

EDIT: Hmm, secondary PTSD. Actually, that makes quite a bit of sense as well. But usually it needs a trigger of something in the afflicted person's past, what usually happens is that they encounter a victim of a traumatic experience that they relate to VERY strongly.

So, Participant, how many of those "terrorists" infiltrating the military right now are white? How many of them are christian? How many of them are just like Sgt. John Russell, who shot dead five of his fellow soldiers at Ft. Carson, Colorado?

And if there's this huge influx of terrorists and radical muslims in the military, why are the vast majority of soldier-on-soldier attacks, murder-suicides, and suicide attacks committed by white christian men?

Quote:

Veterans from the two wars have committed at least 120 murders beginning with a spate of killings of wives at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2002 and continuing with five murders at a military base in Colorado last year.

Seems like you're mighty quick to jump on the blame-all-the-muslims bandwagon. Shouldn't we blame all the christians, too? Or shouldn't we at least blame all the soldiers?

At this time there's really not enough information to say - and given the desperate frenzy to go in one direction regardless of whatever the real facts are, we will probably never know.

Was it me, I would start by taking a long hard look at whatever exactly was the cause/result of his transfer to Ft Hood in the first place, cause I suspect that would tell us much.

But, seems ideology is going to trump reason and logic here, which is no surprise whatever to me, nor does it especially upset me given that the folks self-destructing are the same folks who will wind up pointing those guns at *US* if we get too uppity, you know ?

So pardon me if the idea of the standing army we ain't even supposed to have turning into a circular firing squad doesn't bother me a whole lot.

I can't speak for others, but I've seen hundreds of people die, none of those deaths peaceful or painless. It's been decades, and every now and again it will come back to me out of the blue, as if it was just yesterday. The trigger is always something trivial - like a person seen from mostly the back whose cheek and forehead curve the same way. It always takes me by complete surprise. And all the old feelings will come down on me as if I haven't lived these decades or learned any new perspective. That's how it works for me.

Major Patsy MD, laughing and joking the day of the massacre

What is sanity?

Maybe the logical reaction for any sane patriotic American is to stop the genocide in innocent nations, that's already murdered 2.7-million OF OUR OWN ALLIES PLUS 100,000 US TROOPS, by stopping the criminals who obey unlawful orders?

That of course is the secret question that can never be asked by CIA/DIA secret agent talking heads in the media mafia.

BTW it's impossible for an illegal alien to sign any valid orders as commander in chief, just like it's impossible for a Congress to legally fund an undeclared war, especially using borrowed counterfeit bank loans from a private bank and Commie China. THAT'S insane.

Quote:

We learn that Hasan “Showed no signs of worry or stress when he stopped at 7-Eleven for his daily breakfast of hash browns, said Jeannie Strickland, the store’s manager.” ” He came in (Thursday) morning just like normal,” she said, “nothing weird, nothing out of the ordinary.”

CNN feverishly seized upon the CCTV footage and began broadcasting it relentlessly because Hasan is seen wearing Arab garb and Muslim headdress, fitting the carefully pre-arranged stereotype perfectly.

Just like the 7/7 bombing patsies who were filmed laughing and joking, getting into arguments and generally doing everything a terrorist would want to avoid, Hasan’s pre-attack behavior should set alarm bells ringing.

Just like the 7/7 bombing patsies and the liquid bombing patsies, the description of Hasan by those reinforcing the official characterization of him as a vengeful jihadist is completely at odds with how his own family members described him.

Hasan’s cousin laughed when an interviewer asked him if the shooter was “violent.”

“He was just normal, loved sports, never got into trouble.” He said his family was “shocked and baffled” by the incident.

“His parents didn’t want him to go into the military,” Mr. Hasan said. “He said, ‘No, I was born and raised here, I’m going to do my duty to the country.’ ”

Then the lurid details really began to pour in to reinforce the Islamic terrorist stereotype – Hasan screamed “Allah Akbar!”

Of course no real Muslim terrorist says "God is Great", he says "Mohammed is his prophet." That's just a mindfreak by the 9/11 Coverup Commission blaming suicide bombers who are still alive, flying for Saudi Airlines and Saudi Air Force.

Smiling happy lone nut? Never mind those other shooters.

Amazing how fast FBI and CNN (CIA) got this security video, when video has never been released of the bombings of OK City fed bldg and Pentagon on 9/11, not even "cockpit voice recordings" nor ATC debriefing on 9/11.

First of all, I am a former registered EMT. You do know what EMT means, right ? Or do I have to spell it out for you ?

As for being a vampire, you DO know that they are fictional beings, right ?

Second of all, what I have is not PTSD b/c flight/ fight isn't triggered.

Instead, they are powerful memories triggered by trivial random inputs. That is a NORMAL function of untrafast connections between the primary visual cortex and the amygdala. The function is useful b/c it allows people to extract simple visual cues and respond to them before they even know what they've seen, or thought about what to do. As such, it is an inexact process which may or may not be responding to important factors. Instead, it focuses on specific details of an event which caused powerful emotions in the past.

So, it looks like once again you are posting really stupid things, and having nothing but personal snark in your little mind.

Didn't say 'vampire'...Folk would find it strange that your denial is oblique and off-target , except that's the usual modus operandi for programmed Zombies...Mental Slaves...

Zombies are real :

'...Wade Davis, a Harvard ethnobotanist, presented a pharmacological case for zombies in two books, The Serpent and the Rainbow (1985) and Passage of Darkness: The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie (1988). Davis traveled to Haiti in 1982 and, as a result of his investigations, claimed that a living person can be turned into a zombie by two special powders being entered into the blood stream (usually via a wound). The first, coup de poudre (French: 'powder strike'), includes tetrodotoxin (TTX), the poison found in the pufferfish. The second powder is composed of dissociatives such as datura. Together, these powders were said to induce a death-like state in which the victim's will would be entirely subject to that of the bokor. Davis also popularized the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was claimed to have succumbed to this practice.

'...Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing further highlighted the link between social and cultural expectations and compulsion, in the context of schizophrenia and other mental illness, suggesting that schizogenesis may account for some of the psychological aspects of zombification.'

Rue , the diagnosis fits , because oblique and off-target responses are also characteristic of schizophrenia and other mental illness , which is probably why you were screened out of the EMT business...

Your shrouded dishonesty fools only some of the folk some of the time , and they're probably your peers , sharing similar psychosocial traits...Like 'mind-slave/Zombie'...

and "Lawful Money" :
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/lawfulmoney.asp

'...Any form of currency issued by the United States Treasury and not the Federal Reserve System, including gold and silver coins, Treasury notes, and Treasury bonds. Lawful money stands in contrast to fiat money, to which the government assigns value although it has no intrinsic value of its own and is not backed by reserves. Fiat money includes legal tender such as paper money, checks, drafts and bank notes.

Also known as "specie", which means "in actual form."

Oddly enough, the dollar bills that we carry around in our wallets are not considered lawful money. The notation on the bottom of a U.S. dollar bill reads "Legal Tender for All Debts, Public and Private", and is issued by the U.S. Federal Reserve, not the U.S. Treasury. Legal tender can be exchanged for an equivalent amount of lawful money, but effects such as inflation can change the value of fiat money.'
