Quote:That was a waste of time, wasn't it Perfesser? I was thinking exactly the same thing as I read through the thread; was really interested at first, then all but sprained my finger scrolling down to ignore all PN's rants and the snarking back and forth. I notice your post did no good either, which is why I rarely bother. On the other hand, I'm not into assigning negative acronyms to anyone, and once one of the extremists STARTS the snarking, what I see is nastiness coming back at them and then pretty much equal stuff going back and forth from then on. Nobody's innocent.

Yeah, that's true. And we shouldn't toss our ways of interacting. I actually recall that despite your dramatically different posting styles AND political orientation, you and RipWASH get along well. So snarking isn't necessarily bad. Sometimes things just get a little close to flames, which can be uncomfortable for the onlookers, but I guess it's none of our business. Actually I did kinda snark something Hero said today, but I was more about expressing disbelief over his choice of argument and examples. I will point out a false analogy if I see it. Sometimes I'll try to be funny too.

Quote:These issues in mind, in May the News Sentinel, with sponsorship from the Associated Press Managing Editors, held one of many roundtables taking place around the country to discuss online comments—essentially how to retain the benefits of public participation while limiting or removing the nastiness that often accompanied it. Those invited to speak included Randy Neal from knoxviews.com, McAdams, local news directors and editors, community leaders, public officials, victims of crime (Channon Christian’s mother, Deena), and victims of fame (Phillip Fulmer’s daughter Brittany [daddy was overpaid $100-million to coach college football]). “There’s no free speech issue here,” remarked former magazine editor William S. Rukeyser. “As editors we edit everything else that’s in our publications. There’s no reason that suddenly the comments at the end or in a tab are a wholly different area. In my view they’re just a modern technology version of letters to the editor.”

You had to run it each time you opened the thread though and it seemed kinda pointless after a while. In the end, PN's only a little crazier than rest of us. I guess the consensus is that it's better to put up with the loose ends and have freedom than rely on a central authority (The Alliance?) to crack down on the freaks. SergeantX
