Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:57am EST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. companies will have to disclose their compensation practices and board members' qualifications under rules adopted by the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday. The SEC voted 4-1 to change how companies govern themselves and provide more information to investors, who have criticized lax boards and lavish executive compensation.

FTC sues Intel for abusing market dominance
WASHINGTON
Quote:

(Reuters) - The U.S. government filed suit against Intel Corp on Wednesday, accusing the chip giant of illegally using its market dominance to stifle competition for a decade. The Federal Trade Commission, one of two U.S. agencies that enforce antitrust law, said Intel was trying to shut its competitors out of the market. Shares of Intel fell nearly 2 percent, while those of competitors Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Nvidia Corp rose 6 percent and 7 percent respectively.

"Intel has engaged in a deliberate campaign to hamstring competitive threats to its monopoly," said Richard Feinstein, director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition.
"It's been running roughshod over the principles of fair play and the laws protecting competition on the merits."

Thanx, dear, I really appreciate SOMEONE putting up a couple of posts about what Obama's TRYING to do that's positive.

I'm not sure about Gitmo any more than DT, in that I'd like to know the PRACTICES will be different than what went on there, not just the location, and I'd like to see investigations and prosecutions.

But this one I'm tickled by. If it works. If they can be held accountable. If lobbyists aren't successful in "buying" enough loopholes for it to be made irrelevant.

Computer technicians have found 22 million missing White House e-mails from the administration of President George W. Bush and the Obama administration is searching for dozens more days' worth of potentially lost e-mail from the Bush years, according to two groups that filed suit over the failure by the Bush White House to install an electronic record keeping system.

The two private groups — Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and the National Security Archive — said Monday they were settling the lawsuits they filed against the Executive Office of the President in 2007.

Yeah, it's good to see some positive news.

I'd LOVE it if they'd actually stop torturing, instead of just stopping it in Guantanamo, but it seems that's too much to ask. :(

I think most of the actual torture happened under Bush. What to look for now is "indefinite preventive detention"- an extremely dangerous precedent, if I ever heard one!

My understanding is that the conditions at that Supermax Federal prison in Colorado were called "a clean verison of hell", and that the sheer isolation would psychologically destroy anyone.
