The "stampede" was caused by a media blitz led by the daily monopoly newspaper's banner headline: "NO GAS!"

The TV picked it up and immediately ran with it, hyping the lack of gas "due to hurricane Ike", reported to last "one week".

So every commuter who needed to get to work that week filled up on Friday, after most of the gas stations had already raised their prices $1.50 to $2.00 a gallon.

It appeared some stations "got gas" despite no tanker filling up the station. As if it was just turned off at the pump, to create artificial scarcity. That particular new station and Lowes development got a $20-million TIF grant from the city govt, funded by annexing that part of the county and doubling taxes.

The city mayor owns Pilot Oil Corp. He also owns an oil refinery, which is the group that actually made all the profit this week. Pilot is already under criminal investigation for price gouging of hurricane victims in Florida.

The newspaper got a $20-million TIF grant, for propaganda services. It was trying to get a $1-billion TIF grant, for Scripps Howard "Universe Knoxville" HQ. Mt Scripps and Mr Howard are members of Bohemian Club.

I do believe PN has a point, even though it could not have POSSIBLY have affected them, especially so quickly - all the stations up here jumped their prices too, and upon investigation WITHOUT an increase in their supply cost.

Fuckers are just using it as an excuse, just like they do with all those mysterious spring "petroleum accidents" (a phenom I have been watching for EIGHT years now) that manage to drive prices up without ever doing any actual damage or causing any significant loss.

GA has suffered the 2nd highest jump in gas prices in the nation following Hurricane Ike, but despite a number of complaints and a task force designed to seek out and punish those stations which " gouge " customers, none have yet turned up. And only a handful turned up after Katrina. So, despite wide spread rumors, there was no gouging.

Actually, prices do go up every Spring, due to the Fed mandated emissions standards which force refineries to make cleaner burning blends of gasoline. Those mandates end in October, as prices and demand goes down, resulting in lower prices. Has your 'study' also discovered any of that ?

The station down the street from here was recently fined $4,000.00 USD for such behavior, amongst other chicanery...

And to my everlasting ire the only other gas station in town is closed with weeds growing up through cracks in the pavement cause the owner, who was a damn nice guy and a stand up fellow got freakin black-bagged by INS over some technical violation he wasn't even aware of and sent off gods-knows-where, and this in broad fucking daylight not 200 feet from my house, all cause he had the misfortune to be of arabic descent in a nation gripped by the fear and paranoia of week kneed pissants like you, Rap.

Far be it for them to have sent him a letter or assisted in fixing matters given that the guy was trying to get established here as a citizen - all the while shitheads who hop the fence get treated with kid gloves cause they ain't arabic.

As for my files, then perhaps you would like explain the basis for certain incidents, hmm ?

You know, like concerns a couple years back about supply and one specific oil company official stating that short of a refinery fire, nothing was going to drive prices up...

Followed almost a week later by, ta-da, a refinery "fire"...

At at empty and unused tank, which did nothing more than scorch it's paint, supposedly caused by a freak lightning strike in spite of the fact that those tanks are grounded to prevent such occurances and static sparks.

Followed by a nice quick price jump that didn't go away for quite a while.

Just because the Gov fucks with the oil companies to squeeze them for more money doesn't mean the oil companies are not more than capable of fuckery to squeeze us too.

I was against adding MBTE in the first place cause I knew how that would end, and now were spending even more money to clean that fucking MBTE out of our environment, yet another case of would-be environmentalists not thinking it all the way through, sure.

But it's not like they're not capable of fuckups like this without outside intervention either, like trying to say TEL(Ethyl) was "safe" in spite of full knowledge to the contrary - a'la Radium Girls part deux.

I'd also like to see some cites of your own claims, which you never seem to feel the need to provide, specifically about those emission standards, not to be a dick, but simply because I would like to investigate that for myself and how that affects pricing at both ends and compare it for discrepencies, of which there are plenty on any other factor, as well.

As far as task forces go, that's pure theatre and I think we both know it, no matter what has been claimed - to date I only know of ONE state attorney general who's ever really put a boot in some ass over it, and we elected her Governor, but alas made the mistake of filling the empty post with a dickhead for whom payoffs, payback and politics are more important than the job at hand, which pisses me off all the more cause up TO that point he had a decent enough record that I freakin voted for his ass...

Common freakin sense will tell you that the impact of Ike up HERE in friggin michigan does not justify such an increase, especially when afterwords the price slowly climbs back down over the next ten days or so - that's just pure opportunity gouging.

Brazil has also discovered another oil field PREVIOUSLY to the latest find that contains 8 billion barrels of oil.

Now, if ONE OIL TANKER can cause the price to go up, why would the discovery of 33 billion barrels of oil NOT cause the price of crude to decrease by 1/5? Because the MARKET IS FIXED AND YOU ARE GETTING SCREWED. "

I note for the record that raising their prices also has the effect of curbing demand allowing market equilibrium to be restored thus resulting in a stablized suppy-demand-price relationship. So in effect the raising of prices is a natural self correction by local market forces. There's another Nobel...I'm gonna need to clear off my shelf (and they have not even seen my poetry, Middle East peace plan, the HIV vaccine I discovered while eating Chocolate Cheerios, and that particle accelorater I built in my basement from my old train set).

Attorney General Bob Cooper filed settlements today with 16 companies and individuals who own 27 gas stations in Middle and East Tennessee over allegations of price gouging in the wake of Hurricane Ike. Once signed by a judge, the settlements will result in $73,447 in potential restitution for consumers. Collectively, the settlements amount to the largest enforcement sweep under the State’s price gouging statutes in the State’s history. The Attorney General also filed suit against Knoxville-area retailer, Weigel Stores, Inc., for alleged unlawful price increases under the Tennessee Price Gouging Act of 2002 and the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act at seven gas stations.

Even before Hurricane Ike made landfall, thousands of consumers reported suspected price gouging. Overall, the State registered more than 4,000 calls alleging excessive pricing.

The Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Commerce and Insurance analyzed all of the information received from consumers. The Attorney General’s Office reviewed the complaints, company costs, and pricing data and followed up by demanding additional information from more than 100 stations. After reviewing all of the information, the Attorney General settled with 16 companies and individuals, involving 27 retail stations in Tennessee. All of the settling defendants cooperated with the State’s investigation.

“The assistance of the Department of Commerce and Insurance – especially the Consumer Affairs division – and the Department of Agriculture were instrumental in aiding this investigation and assisting consumers,” Cooper said. “We also appreciate the cooperation of the businesses that elected to settle these claims and reimburse their customers.”

“Protecting the interests of consumers and business owners alike to promote fairness,” said Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Leslie A. Newman, “is at the heart of what our department does. We were happy to support the effort to crack down on price gouging.”

All the defendants who settled deny any wrongdoing and assert they settled to avoid the time and expense associated with litigation. The defendants who settled collectively advertised and sold regular unleaded gasoline at prices ranging from $4.69 to $5.98 per gallon.

Under the settlements, all of the gas stations will make restitution directly to consumers who submit a valid claim and will be paying civil penalties and costs to the State. Collectively, these civil penalties total $40,000.

The total amount of restitution available to consumers is over $73,447. In pursuing the settlements, the Attorney General’s goal was to obtain as much restitution as possible for consumers who purchased from these gas stations.

The companies and gas stations who settled with the Attorney General are: Rocky Top Markets, for eight stations in East Tennessee; Pilot Corp. and Pilot Travel Centers, for three stations in Knoxville and one in Powell; Git ‘n Go, Inc., for two stations in Clinton; Chally Wally (Winchester); Shady Valley Country Store (Shady Valley); Caryville Amoco BP (Caryville); Stop ‘n Go Market (Morristown); Burnett’s Fuel Center (Allardt); Lovell Shell (Knoxville); Adams’ Lakeside Market (Estill Springs); Big D’s Shell (Clinton); Seven Star Stop (Johnson City); Fun Foods (Harriman); Rock Hill Grocery (Rogersville); Lacy’s Market (Mt. Juliet) and Speedy Market (Winchester).

Consumers are asked to provide as many details as possible including the station name, location of the station, the price of the gas, and grade of the gas.

4.049 for 88octane gasahol with 15% ethanol - which is a new thing they are pushing, having even less energy than 87octane.
4.999 for 91octane real gas with no ethanol - 91octane is the highest that Libtards allow now.
5.089 for diesel.

The designated lowest price location is Peshtigo, 40 miles away.
