Barn Find: Steve McQueen's Porsche 917

It was found in a barn in 2001, where it had been parked since 1972/73.

It's now been restored to its former glory.

This was one of my very favorite cars growing up, ever since I saw McQueen in "LeMans" in the theater. Horrible movie; great racing, though.

Used to be that there were some decent replica kit-cars of this one , 'til Porsche kiboshed that activity . Too Bad .

I did have a lot of fun racing the slot-car version of it back in the day...One that I had was the Gulf Oil-sponsored one , which was pretty much the same paint scheme as pictured...

Liked to race against the Ferrari 512...

If there's something I like better than old cars found in barns , it's old airplanes :

'...The Ranger Airfield is now home to a unique piece of history. I acquired a 1946 J-3 Sunday afternoon. The plane, which was full of life for a short three years, has not flown in 59 years.

NC7057H was purchased by Charles Moseley of Coleman County in late '46. The plane, assembled in Lock Haven, PA, took a 30 minute test flight and was then flown to Fort Worth in Oct. 46. The trip to Meacham took 14.5 hours. For three years Moseley and his daughter Charlotte flew the aircraft 182 hours, bringing the total airframe time to 197 hours. For some reason in 1950, the plane was pushed into the hangar on their farm after a flight and would wait there to see daylight again on Jan. 18 2009. A 25 ft. Mesquite tree blocked the hangar doors.

The airplane is in remarkable condition. Minimal rust and a considerable amount of cotton fabric remain on the airframe. I would be very surprised if I have to replace any tubing. The family had done a fabulous job keeping up with and taking care of the paperwork. Though they are short, I have all of the aircraft logs and documents from the CAA. The most amazing part of what this airplane has to offer is that it has never been recovered. The details I'm finding and will duplicate should provide this airplane with the opportunity to be the lowest time, most original Cub flying. The only item I plan on altering is to not use the original fabric, which was cotton. I will use the original butyrate dope though.

I have all six instruments (they will be rebuilt), seat materials (they will be copied), belts, and even though they're not usable, the original tires with "Cub" inscribed in them.

Though the plane was completely assembled when I got my hands on it Sunday, I've done a very good job of making it a basket case quick. I've really jumped on this thing and want it flying as soon as possible. I plan on utilizing the plane through my nonprofit, Calvert Charitable Projects, to give rides to kids at Ranger and other flying events. What better way is there to expose a young mind to aviation than through the open door of a Cub.'

It's just an object that could hurtle down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Cirque du Sarthe at 230+mph - And this was in 1970/71!

It's just an object, like Firefly's just a TV show.

Later variations ran in the Can-Am series, where they were punching out over 1500hp in qualifying trim. A modern Formula 1 car puts out closer to 850hp. A Corvette Z-06 puts out 505hp. Even the vaunted Bugatti Veyron puts out a relatively paltry 1001hp.


Just an object, indeed, but what an object!

Nice. My dad had a Clipper - basically a widened four-seat version of the Cub. Good plane. Good times.

Clipper is a great airplane...I purely love it !

I got some meteorological research flights in the predecessor , PA-12 Super Cruiser , out in New Mexico 30 years ago...Still one of my very favorite airplanes...The one that I flew had been refit with a 150 hp O-320 Lycoming , and needed rudder trim , which it did not have...A Super Cub rudder would have made all the difference...On every flight , I came back with cramps in my right leg from holding in rudder to correct the increased torque...




Many people do not know that Belford Maule basically re-invented the Clipper , by starting with a Piper Pacer , which he heavily modified by giving it a high-lift fuselage and other features to increase its lifting ability , and turning it into a 4-seater...Came up with a great bushplane !

Yeah, my dad sold his in the mid-80s - the guy who bought it ground-looped it on his first take-off, and pretty severely trashed it. My dad was glad he didn't go along with the guy! Nobody was badly hurt, but the guy's ego took a hit.

Almost the same thing happened after the sale of the BE-77...They managed to fly it home , down to 'Bama , then a 'fright instructor' got it into a spin series from which they did not recover...Ended the two aboard , plus the airplane...Terrible waste .

Nothing wrong with turning a car thread into a plane thread, especially when they're all classic cars and planes! :)

Is the Clipper known for spinning easily? My dad used to let me take the stick when we flew, and sure enough, I put it into a flat spin. He didn't flinch, just took control and fiddled around a bit, and then we were on our way again!

And yeah, a long-tail 917 would be high on my list of "Lottery Cars", but I doubt I'd even be able to fit inside it. They always look so big in the movie, but in the other pictures, they look REALLY small. Funny thing is, a Honda CRX, while it LOOKS tiny, is actually really roomy inside. I fit in it far better than I fit in a Dodge Durango, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Supra (ANY Toyota, really), Mazda anything, Ford Crown Vic, etc. I *can* wedge my head under the roof of an Acura NSX, but it wouldn't be my daily driver. Oddly, a Mini Cooper fits me exactly like a CRX does; the console hits the same part of my leg, my head brushes the headliner just as much, the seating position is remarkably the same.

I'm about to go shopping for something to use as a daily, and I can usually cross off cars I'm interested in just by trying one on. Miata? Hell to the NO! Can't get my legs under the dash. Toyota MR-Spyder? *MAYBE* I fit, but it would be tough with the top up. I'm considering a SAAB 9-2x, because it's really just a much nicer Subaru WRX, and they sell cheaper than the Scoobies do. Maybe a Lexus IS300 SportBack, if I can find one. They're rare birds. I like hatchbacks in general, and small wagons when I can find decent-driving ones. Selling my Accord Wagon was a mistake; I'd gone through it completely, replacing struts (Koni adjustables), springs (0.75" lower), bushings (urethane Energy Suspension units all around, including motor mounts), brake pads (Porterfield R4-S front and rear), rotors, all four wheel bearings, front axles, timing belt and water pump, distributor, exhaust (used a later 4-2-1 design for better flow and about 12hp increase), wheels & tires (Borbet Type S 16x8s running Pirelli P Zero Nero performance rubber), and a stainless cat-back 2.5" exhaust system and K&N intake with port-matched polished intake manifold. I miss that car. It handled better than my daily beater CRX does, and could haul a shitload to boot!

So, on to the next thing... Maybe a Prelude SH or an Accord Coupe, maybe a Protege5 or a Mazda3. Hell, maybe a Honda Element or Scion XB. S2000 is out - again, I can't get behind the wheel. I can *barely* ride shotgun in it!

Heck, maybe getting into something different will kick me in the ass to strip the daily beater CRX and use the best parts to put the minty yellow one on the road. I bought it from the original owner, rebuilt the engine and transmission, and put it in the garage 5 years ago. Might be time to resurrect it. Needs paint, but the interior looks like it just left the factory. Oh, and the engine I dropped in is a twin-cam Japanese model, good for 130hp, up from the 108hp the stocker came with. And I made a custom short-geared transmission for it, similar to the one I'm using in my current car, but with an added factory limited-slip diff thrown in. I'm thinking of tracking down a 4.43 final drive unit for it, too. Cuts the top end, but I really don't need to be going much over 125mph anyway. :)

I'm just spectator drooling.

But if you buy a SAAB imma laugh my ass off at you, and you *know* why, you know better, dammit.

And the Miata, especially the american Miata, is pathetic, Mikey - it's so underpowered it struggles even empty with just ME in it, that gerbil-wheel it's got under the hood is totally inadequate for even safe performance levels.

Oh, and I went through my former township yesterday, and they had the Mustang Mach I sitting out in front of the muffler shop again, so that one ain't sold yet - I am sore tempted given that I would pay about the same for a modern piece of shit junkhead as a classic, and could prolly talk my Credit Union into financing it as a potential investment...

Especially since not a one of em has ever seen me drive.

Frem, I'm with you on the SAAB thing, really - remember, you're talking to a guy who's owned both a Volvo AND an Audi! Thing is, the 9-2x wasn't MADE by SAAB. That's it's dirty little secret. It actually IS a Subaru WRX with better interior trim, made on the Subaru factory line by Subaru workers, and never touched by SAAB itself. That's what makes it worth a look.

As for the Miata, anyone who slags one has never had to race against one on a twisty course. Hell, it's got more power (and early ones had less weight) than my CRX - and it's got FAR better balance. I've seen many a stock Miata just SLAY even a Z-06 Corvette on a short road course. They're a chick car to some, but they shouldn't be underestimated. Like a Honda, they don't really tend to wake up 'til you hit 4500rpm or so. If I have any beef with the Miata, it's only that I can't fit in the little fuckers!

Classic Mach 1 'Stang? That IS a solid investment. Credit union would be fools NOT to lend money on that.

Yup, that was really the only car of the "muscle car" era that ever did anything for me. Sure, Mopars are nice (my brothers love 'em), but I'd rather have a '68 Mustang fastback with a 390 and a 4-speed.

Ah, yes, the Subaru WRX is pretty badass for it's price range.

As for the Miata, I'm slaggin it cause I got to drive one, and the performance *I* got out of that little POS reminded me unfavorably of an old friends MG - I borrowed that heap once and disliked it intensely.

I don't mind a small, underpowered car, mind - but only if it's *PRICED* as one, like the old Geo Metro was, instead of trying to pretend...
Supposedly the Miata is an A-Class racer, and it does handle ok, but when I was playin with it, it really struggled on accelleration, we're talkin about 11 seconds just to reach 60mph - which might have been a combination of it being an automatic and the rev limiter, but still, it felt sluggish on the throttle response.

It did handle ok, but I can put up with piss poor handling if I have enough juice under the hood, hell the Gremlin X is one of my all time favorites, this huge monster engine with a little car built around it, like puttin a saddle on a rocket.

If I was gonna do a mini-rocket today though, I'd go with the SmartCar Diablo mod, runnin the Hayabusa engine, man that looks fun.



Also, imma Mopar fan, if you're gonna go with massive muscle, gimme the Cuda, the GTX, the Superbird - the Mustang has the handling, but someone who knows how to take a corner in a heavy car is gonna beat you out of the corner on pure torque and leave you choking on dust into the straight - the trick to it is diving the corner and breaking the back end loose juuuust right so that the weight and mass of the vehicle itself keeps it in the sweet spot while you line up for the launch.

That chase scene always cracks me up, credit where it's due, McQueen as Bullit was pretty badass, but there's a couple scenes where you can hear the chargers engine over the mustang *inside* Bullits car, and given the relative weight of both vehicles, the finale always makes me laugh - he didn't hit that heavy beast *nearly* hard enough, unless the other driver panicked.

I see your chase scene and raise you the end of Fast & Furious, dude, he CARRIES THE FRONT END AIRBORNE THROUGH SECOND GEAR!



And what with rookie boy poppin all four bottles just to keep up with it, hehehe - I about bawled at what happened to that car.

If you watch the chase scene you notice they pass the same green VW Beetle more then once. It is just the same scene shot from different angles.

My friend had a 440 Charger and he would pop the clutch and just sit there smoking tires. Then he would let of the gas, just a little, and your neck would snap back from the launch. It was straight from the factory.

I toldja my brothers were both into Mopars, right? Well, one of 'em still has a few of his toys, including a '71 440 Charger. Stand on the throttle at 70mph, and it *will* kick the back end out as it downshifts and smokes the tires! He's also got a Challenger R/T (383) and had a pre-production Challenger convertible (the seventh one ever built, according to the numbers), which was just a base 318 model, but numbers-matching, which he recently let go. He's been restoring the R/T for the last few years, and swears it's almost done. The Charger is just a beast, and one of the few cars that legitimately scares me. Mash the throttle on that one, and you WILL be somewhere in a hurry - up that tree, through that parked car, across that field...


As for Zit and the GS455 Stage 1 - a buddy and I skipped class in high school ('78) and went to a nearby used car lot that always had lots of cheap muscle cars. He wanted to test drive the Stage 1 they'd just put out - cherried out, $1500, all stock. So we hop in, get out of the parking lot, he cranks the wheel to go around the corner, and stomps on it. Bad move. Car goes all the way around and slams into a parked car on the street! Damn. Glad I wasn't driving when that happened! I'd love to say it wouldn't have happened if I were driving, but I know better. :)

Yeah, the GS was a nasty car, and Buick never really advertised it as such. It was nearly the perfect sleeper, 'cause no one ever seemed to see ya coming in one of those.

I had a '73 "Boattail" Riviera - that's about as close as I ever got to a muscle car. It had a 455 that had been breathed on a bit, and was wicked fast, but like most mucle cars, it wouldn't stop or turn worth a damn. Sure rode sweet, though...



That's not mine. Mine never looked that sinister. That one makes me drool.

Bullitt 'Stang was a '68 Highland Green GT 390/4-speed.

You could also get the "R"-code 428 Cobra Jet version, which was basically a street-legal drag racer.

The GT 390 was capable of running 13s on stock tires. Not too shabby at all.
