Yesterday, hate radio host Rush Limbaugh talked about the volcanic eruption that’s affecting air travel over much of Europe, saying it was “God speaking” in response to the passage of health care:
Quote:

You know, a couple of days after the health care bill had been signed into law Obama ran around all over the country saying, “Hey, you know, I’m looking around. The earth hadn’t opened up. There’s no Armageddon out there. The birds are still chirping.” I think the earth has opened up. God may have replied. This volcano in Iceland has grounded more airplanes — airspace has more affected — than even after 9/11 because of this plume, because of this ash cloud over Northern and Western Europe. At the Paris airport they’re telling people to head to the train station to catch trains out of France, and when people get to the train station they’re telling people, “There aren’t any seats until at least April 22nd,” basically a week from now. It’s got everybody in a shutdown. Earth has opened up. I don’t know whether it’s a rebirth or Armageddon. Hopefully it’s a rebirth, God speaking.

God sucks ass at target practice. Hell, a serial killer strikes, and god tries to smite him, but misses and hits a church in Oklahoma with a tornado instead. What a fuckhead.

And no, I'm not worried about god striking me down for saying he's a shitty shot. For one, he doesn't exist; for two, he can't hit the broad side of a goddam barn, it would seem!

Rush would have made more sense if he'd claimed that the volcano was god striking back at Iceland for trying to participate in US-style banking hijinks! 'Course, their economy collapsing already showed them the folly of their ways on that move...

I forget where I saw/heard it, but there was a bit about why you shouldn't stand next to blasphemers, not cause that makes you guilty, but because "god" is a terrible shot, like a drunken redneck with a sawed off shotgun angry at the whole world - I mean, did you actually READ their friggin bible ?

Blowing up cities to get a few pervs, or whole tribes just to get a couple heretics, fire, flood, whatever, to the point where if *I* had lived in them days, I'd be regarding him like Conan does Crom, fucked if I want his attention on the same continent as me!

So yeah, I picture their "god" as a drunken, angry, intolerant redneck with the cosmic equivalent of a sawed off 12 gauge side by side who's as likely to hit the fools trying to worship him as anyone else.

Oh, and did I mention I am extremely hostile to that entire set of belief systems ?
Just so ya know...

frem, Conan is, in addition to being one of the greatest characters ever imagined (best only by Solomon Kane and El-borak...and maybe Malcolm Reynolds), a theologian.

"Valor pleases you Crom, so grant me one request-- grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to hell with you!"

Ergo:

Conan > Augustine

Actually, it does. If you can't even get the basics right, what hope is there of you getting ANYTHING right ? Especially when it comes to Rush ? Ever listen to him ?
No ?
Then any chance you'd understand a thing called " parody " goes right out the window.

Michael Savage ? Yeah, you're edging towards 'hate' radio there. I'd give you that. But not Rush.

Rush's statements here are thoughtless, illogical, and complete pandering to certain listeners of his, but then everyone who already posted here already knows that.

I don't listen to Rush. I do listen to Glen Beck sometimes, and he's made similar illogical arguments about the God's wrath.

Hey folks. If S/He exists, S/He probably doesn't GIVE a damn about taking sides or our puny nations, or heaven forbid POLICIES most of us can barely bring ourselves to care about. God isn't going to strike anyone down because HEALTHCARE passed. I think S/He would have more important things to do than sit around watching monkeys gnaw on each other's asses, like maintain the laws of nature maybe. Or doorbell prank Satan with the ol' flaming bag of chayyot poop.

Bingo Mal. He's already admitted that what he does is for ratings, that it doesn't necessarily reflect what he himself believes. At least he's honest about that! I can't find the clip now, but I saw one of him at a conference somewhere, where he smiled to the reporter and said what he does is for ratings and money and he's a comedian first, his performance doesn't necessarily reflect his own views. Wish I could find that again...

Well, I found part of it, even tho' what I can find is the clip itself:
Quote:

Limbaugh makes no bones about doing his radio show for the love of money, not necessarily for the love of politics or the spirit of debate.

”My audience, my ratings,” Limbaugh replied when asked by Gangel who he does his show for. “For ratings, I will admit it.

“Let me shock the world right here on NBC. I am doing my show for ratings. I want the largest audience I can get because that’s how I can charge the highest advertising rates. Which means what else do I want? Money.”

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/politics/Rush_Limbaugh___I_m_not_the
_leader__of_the_GOP-63888177.html

In the interview, he asked gangel if she would "ask anybody at Saturday Night Live these questions?" That pretty much illustrates how he sees himself, not as a political commentator, but an ENTERTAINER. I've watched clips of him many times, and they pretty much speak for themselves. He knows full well that he's got the GOP under his thumb and ca say whatever he wants, be it racist, inflammatory or just plain lies, and get away with it. I may despise the man, but I don't deny his smarts!

He also says, by the way, that he's not controversial, because everyone who listens to him agrees with him!

Not bothering with the Wind anymore, as it's just blowing hot air again.

Such a convenient way to dodge the issue.

Funny from a guy who accuses others of attacking the messenger. Niki opens with a sentence Rappy don't like, so he pretends it's a reason not to address it. Typical chickenshit Rappy.

In all seriousness, think what such a natural phenomenon has done for the environment.

1.No airplane fuel settling in the skies for a whole week.Have environmentalists managed to record the pollution levels. If they have dropped because of it, why not ban all aircraft for one day a week?
2.The volcanic ash cloud has formed a protective layer that is reflecting heat back off the surface of the Earth into space, thus cooling us.

Nature has a way of sorting herself out, and has achieved in one week what we have been arguing about for 20 years. Well done, love.

Although there'll be no ash settling over US airspace coz it takes too long for the visa to get stamped. And it'll get charged Medical Insurance!!!!!!

Well done, PK. And I have heard people wondering if the ash cloud's protective layer will delay climate change...

But pollution? I dunno...does an ash cloud pollute more or less than jet fuel? Haven't seen any studies...maybe someone should do one. Oh, wait, someone out there no doubt already IS, we'll just have to wait for the results.

Someone may also be doing a study on how much, if at all, the layer of dust will affect climate change. Someone's always doing a study on SOMETHING!

And yeah, sadly the corollary regarding a soldier has its points...but you can't say "American" soldier, because all countries do it. More like "Universal Soldier", if anyone remembers that.

Yeah, I kinda doubt it. Okay, so when people measure pollution, yeah, there's vapour pollution, like CO2 produced from burning fossil fuels, which might be a consideration here, and you also have jet fuel fumes and spills. You can measure this, but because of atmospheric dispersion factors, chemical vapour pollution falls off rapidly at a distance squared from the source until it approaches a background level. Generally, you can expect atmospheric concentrations of chemical vapour pollution to be below a percentage value, in the ppb to ppt range. You see higher values in vapours that have a natural source, such as CO2 (which is around 380 ppm), which can come from volcanoes, burning vegetation, as well as human activities.

Planes were still going to other places besides Europe, so planes were still contributing CO2, and cars and industry were still contributing CO2, and you had a major volcanic eruption as well.

The other aspect of pollution measurement is particulate matter, and with all the ash falling on Europe, no way in HELL were pollution values lower, let alone even HEALTHY.

You could try to calculate out the inputs of the separate sources and see what the drops are, and technically you would see a drop in pollution from airplanes, but good gravy what a headache that'd be, and I'm not sure you'd see enough of a difference to justify it. A day without airtravel you're not going to see a sudden drop in air pollution, because everything has what's called a residence time. CO2 has a residence time that depends on the vegetation in an area and also on precipitation, as CO2 can dissolve in water to create a weak carbonic acid. I think on average it's 20 days for CO2, but I'd have to look it up.

You wanna fix stuff, you're probably going to have to get more drastic than a one day moratorium on just one source of the pollution (and a source that I'm not sure if it's a big percentage at that).

Also, in regards to the ash cloud and cooling, it's a matter of albedo, and the heat capacity of the ash and whatever else is mixed into the cloud. That I can't tell you off the top of my head. Ash clouds CAN cool short term the areas underlying the cloud, on the other hand they can also create atmospheric sulfur compounds that cause warming in addition to the initial CO2 input from the volcano itself.

You could probably isolate the volcanic input, subtract it out, and compare what you have left to normal values, and because you don't have as many airplanes going, that value might be less. If you had perfectly precise instruments, you might EXPECT it to be less, simply BECAUSE there would be fewer aircraft flying.

But whether your calculated value is SIGNIFICANTLY less, that is, within a margin of error, that's where my doubt comes in.

It's an interesting proposal, though, if you were to calculate it out with inputs, outputs, and residence times, you might come up with a drop in concentration over a certain amount of time passing, adding up by each day, with the days with no air travel having reduced input. It would probably be an interesting thought experiment to try to calculate it, though I wouldn't tout my results necessarily being any reflection of reality. It would be a model, based mostly on other people's estimates of the input output quantities.

So your idea about no airtravel one day a week might very well actually reduce concentrations.

But the idea that reduced airtravel during volcanic eruptions would see reduced over all pollution is very unlikely, and I think we've seen this in the health advisories of countries dealing with the ash cloud. Also that the volcano might forestall global warming is unlikely.
