Charlie Crist has officially bolted from the Republican party, deciding to try his luck as an independent in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat. The Republicans have lined up behind Marco Rubio, the "Tea Party" candidate, who polls well ahead of Crist going into the Republican primary (which is open ONLY to registered Republican voters), but latest polling shows that in a three-way race, Crist actually polls ahead of either Rubio or Democrat Kendrick Meek.

So what are your thoughts?

Personally, I'm kinda rooting for Crist. I'd like to encourage more REAL independents to run, and it'd be nice to have someone moderate who can vote with Republicans on some issues and Democrats on others, while being in the pocket of neither party machine.

Rubio is more problematic, especially for the hard right core of the Republican party and the Tea Party. He's hard right on some issues, but he's definitely not into the latest immigration fiasco (being the son of immigrants himself, and realizing that HE is a likely target of the kind of racial profiling called for by the recent Arizona law).

On the other hand, there's Kendrick Meek, who really shouldn't have a chance - except in a race where the conservatives and moderate conservatives split the ticket, which makes him suddenly a semi-contender.

Anyone laying any money or odds on this race?

Crist has a real uphill battle ahead of him. He's hemorrhaging staff and money, longtime friends and colleagues are abandoning him and all but calling him a traitor, yet the majority of Florida voters still have a very favorable impression of him.

Crist was just last year being touted as one of the "great white hopes" of the GOP, even being mentioned on the short list as one of the possible Presidential candidates, one of the few who was seen as having the kind of broad-based appeal to go up against President Obama in 2012. Now all that hope and goodwill seem to have been blown away.

So is Crist capable of winning the race for the Senate? Or is his independent run just going to further cripple the Republican party?

I don't live in Florida, but I am a Republican so I say good riddance. Him and Spector can go to the top of the Empire State building, take each others hands, kiss , then jump.

So you wouldn't consider yourself a "Country First" kind of conservative, I take it.

My advice ?
Start making nice with Meek.

Won't be by much, but all it'll take is encouraging those two dweebs to engage in their usual dirty nasty rotten tactics and barrages of verbal bile, while appearing to be an appalled bystander.

Rubio drags Crist down with him in the eighth, Meek stomps on the "winner" in the ninth and takes it on points in round ten.

It's not a bad bet at that, Frem. Crist has already released some damaging info on Rubio regarding his profligate spending on the party's credit cards. Nothing so damaging as lesbian-bondage-strip-clubs. At least, not yet.
