Um. I am having an emotional response to this ("bad! awful bad!") but... Under attack by logic bomb.

They're sentencing these two men to prison for being gay on charges of gross indecency and unnatural acts... And this is expected to prevent homosexual behaviour...?

Prison rape has about as much to do with homosexual sex as rape of women has to do with heterosexual sex. Think of it in those terms, Byte, and then see how you feel about it.

No, I understand that. But I don't think the people who wrote this law would see a distinction, which is why it's a logic bomb.

But then, people who would freak out this much about homosexuality aren't about logic anyway.

Ah, not I see what you're saying. And you're right about all of that.

Hell, maybe they think getting ass-raped will "cure" them of homosexuality.

Unless, you're saying you do think they're aware of the distinction, and the rape is the REAL punishment?

It's Africa. It's not unusual. Horrific, but not unusual. The stigma of homosexuality is big there, and no doubt homosexuality has been further stigmatized as the cause of AIDS...and you KNOW the problem they have with AIDS there.

Sick sons of bitches, but not surprising. Humans change slowly, if at all...

Huh.

It would appear that nature does not adhere to human logic.

Crappy said something "With empathy"??? Please show the empathy...no, don't bother, come to think of it; we know how you see things...

Aside from the fact that
Quote:

is fact, and thus absolutely no argument against homosexuality in humans. The fact that some book written by humans says so doesn't make it so. That's religious dogma and has no relevancy, it's just yet another parroting of FauxNews. I sure wish you people would come up with your own material; you just show you're unable to think for yourselves, which is a shame.

Let's see, THE LEFT are the ones who feel they should impose their values on "everyone"? I should save that one; you left yourself SO wide open, you should be reminded of it every time you do as you say lefties do!

Niki, I think you made a mistake. I think you mistook RiverDANCER for RiverLOVE. Easy to do - they posted one after the other, and share the same avatar. But RD tends to be quite a bit to the left of RL. To put it mildly. :)

Also, Rappy says he's an atheist, so I took that comment as him snarking the folks from Biblevania, not agreeing with them. He was being facetious.

I tried to personalize my avatar, with a lot of help from the lovely PhoenixRose, but that original one just won't go away, no matter what I do. When I go to edit my profile, the "none" button is marked for avatar, and yet there it is. Ah well.

Niki, I often respect what you have to say, but you're being a bit of a knee-jerk Rappy hater, here. I understand, it can be easy to do, but he was actually being quite kind towards homosexuality with snark towards the fanatical religious doctrine against it. He wasn't trying for an argument against homosexuality, he was posting that fact as an argument against some of that right-wing slogan-slinging. At least, that is how I read it, especially the part I quoted. Nature doesn't adhere to that kind of doctrine. I was and am impressed by that kind of insight. I will restate my kudos to Raptor on this subject.

My apologies, Dancer, I DIDN'T notice the difference between you. Tough to do, with two such similar names and the same avatar. I will try to be more careful.

As to Crappy's post, I dunno. I'll take everyone's word for it that he was snarking, but his use of "human LOGIC" seemed to indicate that he was sayng nature was nuts, and humans got it right (in dissing homosexuality). Neither here nor there, but I'll accept how you say he meant it.

Nonetheless, "dear", you aren't anywhere NEAR my mind...much less on the same planet...99% of the time.

Unfortunately, that seems to say that you were not just jerking your knee at Raptor, but also at Riverlove. It says to me that you did not really consider my post, you reacted to a person you mistook me for, and lashed out for no reason beyond that. I'm a little disappointed in you, Niki, I thought better of you than that.
I accept your apology for lashing out at me, but I feel that I might not be the only one who deserves one. It would make my heart glad if you reexamined some of your suppositions about people here. You might disagree with them on many things, but that's not reason enough to lash out at everything they say. I myself rarely agree with Raptor, hence my comment about marking the calender, but that doesn't make me blindly hateful towards every word he types. I recognize he might have said something worth marking my calender for. I truly hope you might someday mark your own calender.

Sure I am, hon. Sure I am.

This is another classic example of you only seeing what you WANT to see.

If I'm " dissing " anything, it's humanity's attempt to get a grasp on the 'verse in which we all live. It seems like a conundrum, a contradiction, how homosexuality could survive the evolutionary process. I mean, in propagating the species, it's about as useful as an stripe-less, albino tiger ... and yet they still exist.

( and for pete's sake, don't get all bent out of shape with the tiger example....it's just an example. Lord knows, you DO love to run w/ off hand comments and extrapolate all manner of "hidden" meaning.... )

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I've often thought about evolution and homosexuality.

I've come to the conclusion that there must be an advantage, as a species, for some members of the community to exist who aren't occupied with rearing their own children. It may create a workpool of folks who can focus more wholly on other activities. Or it may create a pool of people who can adopt the discards and orphans of others, without the usual territoriality of, "It's not MY child."

In any event, if homosexuality had any strong negative impact on the survival of the species, it would be gone by now. I suspect it's one of those recessive things designed to manifest in limited numbers, sprinkled into the population. The gene is probably passed on by people who only have one of the recessives, so that it can continue to propogate through heterosexual reproductive activity.

Anthony,

I'd agree w/ your initial statement, if I saw more evidence that it held true. While it may be ( I really can't say , for sure ) that gay individuals don't fit the biological *inclination to have kids, I'm not sure it's fair to say they don't want to. Clearly, some who couple w/ 1 spouse do desire a "family", while some heterosexual couples, who ARE capable of reproducing, choose not to do so.

I've personally known more than 1 example of the latter.

* self edit - to clarify, there's nothing biologically inherent about gays which keeps them from having kids, that I'm aware of, save for who they prefer to engage in intimacy with... Obviously, many DO have kids in the standard manner....

Dancer, point heard and taken. Yes, I tend to view a couple of people here through the veil of past experience, and it causes me to misread sometimes and misinterpret others. All I can tell you is I try not to as best I can, and I guarantee the things they’ve said to and about me over time have been worse than what I’ve said. Which is NOT an excuse, I might add.

I do hope, however, you don’t include RL in that, because the things that person has said to and about me are so abhorrent there is NO excuse on their side, and I will never trust or accept them. Raptor, on the other hand I HAVE agreed with in the past, and been civil when he is civil, to the best of my knowledge. Nonetheless, point taken. Thank you.

Raptor, I do apologize for misunderstanding your post. I just re-read it, and hadn’t caught the “logic” in the quote to make the connection. I agree with you. Neither of the two snarks was necessary, however. Why you would choose to think I’d run off with the albino tiger for some reason is beyond me. I admire the big cats, and was honored to know and name one while working at Marineworld...she had some of the genetic problems albinos sometimes do, blind, trouble walking, and I doubt she lived long, but I named her “Tashakur”, Farsi for “thank you”—same thing I later named my male husky. Most of the time your snarks are pretty obvious, I don’t think I misread many of them.

Anthony, your theory is quite sensible and I agree. It might also be a way of keeping the population in check, which would explain why it is more prevalent now—if it isn’t just a case of it being more public. I’ll take the word “serious” with your “negative”, because many, many things continue to exist which have a negative impact on the population, as we both know. Ironic, isn’t it, that gays aren’t ALLOWED to adopt in so many places, if your theory is right? The “village” it “takes” is long gone, sadly.

I’m another like Mike, I knew at 17 that I’d never have kids, as did my best friend, the ranger, and both she and I haven’t had children. It’s not just ZPG for me, it’s having experienced my own parents and feeling I’m not cut out for it. Of course, I didn’t know until 48 that I was bisexual, but I don’t think that makes any difference. Personally, my view is that if human beings saw one another as human beings, and society hadn’t throughout time conditioned us to male-female, AND we’d lost such a strong genetic inheritance to reproduce, anyone could love anyone.

ZPG may begin at home, Mike, but there are always other reasons people don’t have children, and homosexuality isn’t the only one. I’m betting there’s more to it for you, as well.

I agree with Anthony as well. But, AU, I don't think the point Anthony was making is that gay people don't WANT to have kids. Rather, I think he was making an argument that homosexuality evolved as a form of intra-species altruism.

Say that homosexuality is a spectrum, with members of a species running a gamut of either exclusive pairings with the same sex, or sometimes pairings with the other gender (thus occasionally producing offspring). In the human race, exclusively homosexual individuals likely won't produce offspring naturally, but can still help raise children. Socially that could be an advantage for a species, and might prove an advantage to a species in general in some way, thus being useful even in non-social species. Meanwhile, homosexual members that don't exhibit exclusivity all the time can continue to pass on the gene.
