New Sockpuppet List by sockpuppet

My recollection was that someone already made a really compelling case for this one, I don't remember who, but no offense. Please repost, whoever made the case.

I'm just sleepy all the time. I wish I were wacky, and had my old functioning brain back in working order. People have gotten much more sane, it seems. I miss the old lunacy. Maybe it was Bush, driving everyone insane.

It does disturb me a little that there may only be six of is here, especially given the level of argument that goes on.

I'm fairly sure that the people sockpuppet grouped with me are not me, or each other, but less so about the others.

Seems to me that most who post in RWED have no use for sockpuppets other than for a little fun. With a few exceptions, everyone here has lost their cool and shown their dark side at one time or another. Seems to me that it's more likely that the majority of the sockpuppets are from those without the nads to venture into RWED using their primary user-name. Many can't put aside personal animosity from RWED and fear being shunned in the wider forum. I don't know if you've noticed but most who despise each other in RWED get along great on the outside, but I think regular RWED posters are somewhat unique to the general forum population in that regard.

It's nice to see that AURaptor has developed a good sense of humor lately he used to be such a serious dude. You have to have a really big corncob in your ass to not see the humor in his responses lately.

A good prankster (like Chris, f'rinstance, or Frem, but he's usually into more devious stuff) would actually invent a sockpuppet and use him not to shore up his own positions, but rather to point the finger of blame at other users instead.

So a good sockpuppet would point AWAY from you, rather than towards you. I don't remember TheRightStuff (I *think* I vaguely remember Andrew as LynchAJ), but it likely wouldn't have pointed me towards Chris if I'd read his stuff, unless he had a pattern of making the same grammatical errors, or the same kind of language and punctuation usage.

And of course, that was why my sockpuppet, The Spelling Fairy™, was found out after exactly ONE post (Thanks, Frem!) - The Fairy shares my annoyance at mangled language, and it showed. Glaringly. :)

So I took a 5-htp earlier this afternoon, which I had forgotten about, but it goes a long way as to why I was feeling useless. It's a great perspective booster, but in a way, it does kind of leave you feeling like Adventure Dog, very happy, and incredibly dumb. Not as dumb as Gaba. The combination ov Gaba-B and Gabapentin is a mix that I recall saying it should be marketed under the street name "stupidity."

The secret to stupidity of the serotonin form is that you're actuallygetting smarter, but at the cost of memory recall, so don't take too much like I did, and of course, it makes you kinda sleepy, eve wacky sleepy. That should have been wakey sleepy.

But if someone is very focused, and takes a serotonin supplement like 5htp, they will get much more of a perspective based thought process going on. I suspect a good balance of the two makes for the most functional brain. At any rate, I was feeling both nonfunctional, and like I was wasting time, so then I remembered, and it made a lot fo sensed why I was feeling that way.

On sockpuppet suggestions, I wanted to make something clear which is getting lost. That would be that a fair number of sock puppet suggestions were made in jest, and that fact has been lost in the process. As a result there are a fair number of suggestions floating around that have not only no basis in fact, but none in opinion either.

While I'm at it, I didn't mean to say that kaneman is RiveR6213, I meant to say that someone here made a very compelling case of that. This doesn't make it so, even if they share an IP, they could be coworkers, relatives, girlfriends, etc. Ditto for other similar relationships which seem quite definitive.

Another thing that is worth discussing is the nature of sock puppets and their use. I basically fit this into three categories, of which I think only one is found to be particularly annoying.

1) sock puppets for fun. A lot of sock puppets are just out there to goof off, make snappy peanut gallery comments, and the like. I didn't make a separate category for River's sock puppet theater, Wichita goes here as much as anywhere, now occurring to me that the word wichita should have read "which."

2) New identity. A lot of people were at work, away, and created a second account, or got into a social position they wanted out of, regardless of what it is, which i happen to think is a perfectly legit reason. I think there have been a few comments on this so I know were not in agreement on the point.

3) sock puppets deployed in an argument for the purpose of winning an argument. Not passing judgment on the idea, just pointing out that people who have an objection to this are stating a different position than the other two. I can ink of a couple of subsets. One I call "more of me" in which the user creates an illusion of majority. While entertaining to men when it is done to citizen, annoying to citizen, oh fuck it, it was funny as hell. But that's not the point. If someone is two or three people to make it look like theres a consensus on their side, that's the behavior on point three, and I'll have to make a fourth so we can reference them as distinct

4) that a political position is put forth by a sock puppet to manipulate a discussion in an un-fun manner, such as to build a straw man. Say I created an auraptor clone, and then supported his every argument, and then I started feeding bogus points into the argument, so my main personality were to be able to point to that straw man, and knock it town, and appear to have debunked the position of team auraptor for the crowd point of view.

With those four points out there, I think we can probably classify sock puppet behavior and not just whether we want it, but how to deal with it, psychologically.

Here's why this matters at all: i've worked in politics, and I know some of you have more than I, and so you know what I'm talking about here:this happens. Everything that we do here, happens in regular politics. Right now, in the US Senate even, there are sock puppets creating false majorities, bullying, and setting themselves up as bad allies for the purpose of making straw man arguments.

Actually, RWED is in some ways more sophisticated, particularly in the research of issues by some members. We aren't quite paranoid enough when it comes to the triple cross, if we were in politics. If this were a real political group there would be someone here, at least one, who was jujst here to make the whole group look collectively bad. There would be two separate groups of people who were just here to ensure that we got absolutely nothing done at all, the moles and the wrecking balls. Someone here would be trying to take over the entire group and steer it towards some other purpose, and would first try to win our trust, feed us support and slowly build up an army of sleeper agents to support his takeover when we actually never did. You get the drift.

And so the abstract point here is that this psychological dynamic is actually more important IMHO to how political systems work than the actual issues that we debate. A lot more.

As for the specific application of sock puppets on the forum, that was the main point that I wanted to make, but I thought I would introduce the abstract application of the concept in politics in case there was anyone interesting in that aspect of it.

That IP is undoubtedly a proxy. I'm not particularly interesting in ferreting anyone out, I have nothing against kaneman or river, I was just hoping that the sockpuppet discussion would have some basis in reality, kaneman=river had been one of the stronger cases presented, at lewst believed by a fair number of users, myself includede, so I want to know if it was based on anything.

I know frem has been very insistent long term on his assertion that JSF=auraptor so that's another one to see if there's anything behind.

The only assertion that I think was mine was that signym = rue, which I'm not sure of, but nothing against Kathy ether.

The whole sock puppet thing is much more of a game, it shouldn't be allowed to devolve into a witch hunt.

At the moment, I'm pretty sure that Phoenix Rose has made a strong case for not being a sock puppet, frem, byte, mike, chris, river, rap, pizmo, wulf, these people arrant sock puppets, a large number of others, I don't think HK is a sock puppet, or anti mason actually. Antimason to too informed a right wing Christian to be chrisisall, no offense man. Him being auraptor would up my estimation of rap. I suspect who zit might be a sockpuppet.

I've actually found myself reading the wikipedia entry for sockpuppets and meatpuppets. Interesting stuff. I can see why some people do it, in some cases, but most people seem to do it for cruel, selfish, or other terrible reasons.
There was one case discussed where a woman posed as a sixteen year old boy in order to start a 'relationship' with a girl who had been at odds with the woman's daughter. It drove the girl to suicide. The woman was ultimately convicted only of violating the myspace terms of use. She appealed it. The appeal held. *shivers*

WAY back in the day (months and months ago) it was River6213 that was acting insane and generally making life less-than-wholly-pleasant. We tried working with "her" but "she" kept it up and eventually "she" got shouted down and then ignored, and ultimately just disappeared. Not long after that, Shadowfly shows up and makes "his" now-infamous appearance in the "Names and Faces" series of threads. He gets shouted down and disappears. Then Kaneman shows up (right in the middle of the third iteration of the "Names and Faces" thread) and picks up right where Shadowfly left off. Now, the interesting thing about all this is that this is one-and-the-same person (River=Shadow=Kane), who has claimed to have up to 17 accounts on this site. As each successive "troll" persona is rejected, a new one just takes its place, hydra-style. No amount of mod intervention will solve this problem. The deeply ironic thing about this mess is that this individual keeps coming back to this board because s/he gets the kind of reaction s/he is looking for. For crying out loud, s/he has his/her very own thread now! This person clearly has some sociopathic tendencies, possibly Antisocial Personality Disorder (see description at http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis1/p21-pe04.html ). While that is a tragedy, I'm not sure FFF.net is the place for River/Shadow/Kane to go to take out their impulsiveness. I have to throw my lot in with MSG--any type of attention at all will only fuel his/her behavior. The only real way to respond to this (deeply disturbed) individual is to ignore him/her. S/he'll either conform to social norms or just go away.

Well, not actually fascinating, but to see an entire thread where NOBODY stands up for someone behaving like a jerk is interesting.

And I'm getting a clearer and clearer picture; whether sickpuppet or not, apparently there's at least one sickPUPPY here. So sad. ACtually, more than one, if you count Crappy running off at the mouth and attacking innocent posters (see below) and a couple of others I can think of.

What a shame. I don't consider them "Browncoats"; Jayne may have been rough hewn, but he was never that childish, nor was anyone Joss would write.

I dunno - as one of O2B's *AND* BDN's biggest targets, I find their styles pretty close to each other. But I saw something one time, where PN and O2B were tag-teaming a topic, and one or the other of them slipped, and referred to something the other one had said, and gave the clear first-person indication that it was THEM who had said it, when it was clearly the other poster. I noticed, and mentioned it, and they both went *POOF!* and vanished from the thread. Wish I could remember which thread that was, because I got a very clear impression of them being one and the same, whacky as that sounds.

And it DOES sounds whacky, because they have pretty wildly different styles, and I've seen them get into some pretty messy confrontations, too - especially about spaceflight and Moon missions! :)

So, who knows who's who. I suspect some, but can prove none but my own (and that's only if I can remember The Spelling Fairy's™ log-in info!).

Sometimes I don't like myself. No offense to any users who are sockpuppets, I had actually forgotten. I felt as if I should know, I see on these old threads that one of the major sock puppet objections was that people would hide behind a sock puppet to be really offensive to people. I was naive then, I think my tolerance now is much higher. PN just said that nuking Israel would solve the worlds problems and I just ignored it. When I was a relatively new user I would fly off the handle every time he said Jews.

I'd say usually naivete goes in the other direction. As I have gotten older and more jaded, I have less tolerance of assholish behavior than I did in my starry-eyed youth, when I still believed in the general goodness of humanity.

I figured that as long as anyone w/ an above room temp IQ could be convinced to listen, and see things from a different perspective....

I used to be triggered much more easily by every stupid, assholish-acting person, but over time, I came to realize that there are reasons people behave the way they do, I usually can't know those reasons, and I'm not any better than they are in that I can get assholish myself at times (tho' hopefully--and I try--to a less vicious extent).

It helped me not take such things so seriously; even when I snark back now, I'm not actually angry, just ALLOWING myself to let loose. I take things far less personally as a result, and it gives me much more peace.

Aside from which, discounting ignoring them, or calling them on it, how DO we "not tolerate" their rantings?

They might think it's obvious that someone is only pretending to be friendly, when they're nasty under a different name, but it might not be as clear to everyone. I like knowing who I can trust. That's much of what the sockpuppet list is about, to me.

I don't think anyone has added mincingbeast to the list, yet. I started noticing ridiculous posts under that name not too long ago. I can't decide if it's a puppet to incite people, or to poke fun at the posters who seem to take such joy in being inciteful; it seems almost tongue-in-cheek to me much of the time. I don't have any firm theories on who it is, but I feel certain that there's a more familiar name behind it.

Mincingbeast posts fanfiction around here. While there are some users who post fanfiction under multiple usernames, his style is fairly unique. You can usually spot a sockpuppet by posting style similarities. His stories are sincere efforts, and distinctly not trolling.

It's unlikely he's posting fanfiction under two different usernames, so it's likely this is his main account.

He just likes being shocking on the RWED, and yes, most of it is poking fun. I actually have no idea WHAT his real political stances are, he's very good at concealing them.

I know what you mean about the confusion. My initial assumption was that your were River6213/RiverLove, since there was a pattern there, but vie since concluded that you aren't. The strange thing is that I don't dislike River at all, but I do like knowing who I'm talking to. I think you have a point that people who can read other peoples style etc, should scan, also, I think that knowing the various sock puppet strategies would be good.
