I am at a loss as to why this person is still an influential figure in the political landscape.

America loves a winner!

Because she speaks the truth, no matter how much some don't want to hear it.

The EcoNazis are the ones who prevent us from drilling in more accessible areas, pushing us out to drill in deeper and more hazardous areas, like 1 mile below the Gulf of Mexico, catastrophes like what we're faced with now might not have to happen.

Had we been allowed to drill in ANWR, for example.....

Physics doesn't lie. There's nothing that comes close to the yield of energy and low cost as with oil.

If there were, we'd be using it.

** ANYONE ** who thinks the Fed Gov't has done " all it possibly can " in response the Gulf Coast oil disaster, or who thinks Obama isn't lying to us all - I have no use for you. You deserve all the animosity and any vulgar "tone" directed your way. ( Anthony , that includes you, buddy. Sorry )

Hello,

The strange thing is, it's dumb all around. This is hardly the political climate to promote drilling. Never mind that she has promoted the very drilling that is leaking all over the ocean.

Now she's swerving a bit, and advocating drilling in her backyard so that the massive oil spill will only destroy the Alaskan ecology.

Do the message-makers even realize the message they are asking her to deliver? Who is her audience supposed to be? I mean, even people who share her ideology, like Auraptor, are filled with righteous indignation about the oil spill. Even HE wouldn't advocate drilling in the middle of a beautiful...

Oh.

BP isn't drilling there because they were "forced" to. They're drilling there because they WANT to. If they had free rein to drill wherever in the world they wanted to drill - your front yard, the White House's basement, the top of Mount Rushmore, anywhere at all - they'd STILL be drilling right where they are, IN ADDITION to all those other places. Not "instead of", but "in addition to".

Okay, that finishes it for me. Crappy is ONLY here to act as a troll, end of story. That he can ignore all the clips and videos that are being shown of Sarahcuda calling for offshore drilling proves it. His one and only purpose here is to stir up trouble. I don’t plan on making any effort to reason with him (not that it’s been possible until now anyway) and will ignore him except to mock him.

Because they’re all over the place; the woman is lying through her teeth and everyone with two brain cells to rub together knows it. She’s repeatedly called for offshore drilling in her “drill baby drill” screech; none of this has anything to do with that.

I don’t know why she maintains any kind of credibility, either Anthony, it’s a mystery. Closest I can come is that her sycophants watch NOTHING but FauxNews and have their ears firmly closed to anything and everything else. Because I’ll bet dollars to donuts you won’t hear about her current lie THERE, they’ll back her to the hilt.

If one doesn’t know what insanity she spouts, maybe one can maintain some kind of approval of her—if one ever had it. Probably she’s just the shill guys think is hot (?!?!) and women think is a housewife just like them (!?!?!) or something. But she’s lied, shown her stupidity, her ineptness, and the fact that she’s ONLY out for herself and to make a buck, over and over so many times that you simply have to put blinders on and plug your ears and go “neener, neener, I can’t hear you” to have any possible kind of respect for her.

Not sure why this is a thread, actually. All those with brains know about Sarahcuda; all those with brains know they’d be drilling offshore whether they were drilling in ANWAR or anywhere ELSE; all those with brains know we “greenies” have NEVER said drilling was safe anywhere and have been screaming about the potential disasters and that drilling offshore is the MOST potentially dangerous of all, since before Exxon Valdez.

But you see, it works for her. She can say anything she wants, anything at all—she could probably even say the sun revolves around the earth—and her audience would applaud. She’s grokked that, so there will be no stopping the blatant lies as long as she’s out there spewing them, and “her” people will continue to believe her.

I don’t think the message will give them any trouble; if you hadn’t noticed, there are many in the Tea Party and on the right who are STILL in favor of drilling, offshore even, and will continue to be always. They want “safer” drilling, and one of the heads of the Parish in LA has even said they need to drill MORE to keep the economy going and jobs alive, even while we clean up the spill. It’s not a mindset you’re going to be able to get past, that should have been obvious years ago, hell given the fact that oil is finite, we’re going to run out of it, and the wars, etc., it has caused, you’d think everyone would be up in arms to get away from it. But that’s one of those things which also was one of the reasons given for conspiracy theorists: It’s too scary to think of the changes coming to our lifestyle when we either move away from oil or we run out; so deny, deny, deny. Works for them. And for her.

Sarah Palin is the worst joke the Republican Party has played on America in recent years...and I include Bachman, FauxNews, “Not A Maverick” McCain, Limbaugh, Beck, and What’s-her-name, that blonde bimbom all wrapped in one.

We all know that; they can’t bear to even THINK it; so why bother? Why show their facts to be wrong, why show she and others lie blatantly, why even TRY to debate them, why bother at all?

Hello,

I will say this: We do need safer drilling. However, until every existing oil well has been inspected by new teams, and additional safety measures are installed, it's too soon to talk about new drilling operations.

Also, I am not sure that new operations will be necessary. If we go big on alternative energies, we can be gas and diesel free within 40 years (Assuming 2.5% energy replacement per year.)

I think this is entirely possible. Once we need oil only for plastics and lubricants, the existing wells should provide the oil we need for a long time.

There's also the possibility that organic oil sources will be found for plastics and lubricants, meaning we can grow as much as we like when we need it.

This is not the climate to be talking about drilling. If we ever drill again, we will need a complete overhaul of drilling technology and procedures. We will need a new regulatory agency. We will need new inspection criteria. New everything. This will take years. Let's fix what we've done before we move on. If we're lucky, we'll never need to drill again.

Well, technically ethanol only packs about 2/3 punch compared to gasoline, but on the other hand, growing and processing oil as opposed to drilling probably will eventually have less overhead and lower costs, and will be cheaper because of a simple supply/demand. (Oil in ground, not easy to find and get. Plants: plentiful)

The downside is there's apparently a big carbon footprint, and you also don't want to be using food products for fuel, because the poor take that hit when decreased food supply makes prices go up.

Algae may resolve some of those problems, because you can grow lots of it over a smaller area, recycle nutrients, and because people don't actually eat algae.

If someone was really smart, they'd figure out how to market a family sized algae ethanol growing and processing kit, and everyone could take their energy needs into their own hands.

EDIT: Hmm, plastics and lubricants. You pose an interesting side problem.

On one hand, plastics have revolutionized many fields of technology. Medicine wouldn't be the same without plastic tubes, replacement hips/knees/joints/bones etc. You wouldn't want glass performing those same duties.

On the other hand, BPAs and other hormone imitators.

There is that thin skin again. Rap was posting his view.. that because we do not allow drilling in areas that are easily assessable BP has to drill in a mile of water. If you think they would choose to drill there instead of anwr, you are dumber than I originally thought.

Yup, we need SAFER drilling, but we still need drilling. Sadly, we're not getting off oil tomorrow. It will be a process, long and painful and arduous. Meanwhile, we make it safer, we learn from the mistakes, and hopefully we don't repeat them. And we get damned aggressive about inspections and safety.

Yes, as progress is made, oil will be used for less plastics and lubricants as well. The downside is that, as oil is used less and less, it's price will DROP, as oil companies try to lure us back with the promise of cheap oil.

I don't want to be argumentative - really, I don't - but I have to point out that in my opinion, this is EXACTLY the time to be talking about drilling, to be laying the ground rules for how we move forward, while it's still hot in people's minds. 20 years after the Exxon Valdez disaster, we had people with small minds and short memories - including our President - imagining, and saying out loud, that we can be completely "safe" about how we get our oil. We can't. We can be safER, but we can never be completely SAFE when we're drilling for oil, onshore, or off.

This might be the perfect climate to decide exactly how we're going to go about drilling, given that for the foreseeable future, we WILL be needing oil.

Also, since it's now Hurricane Season, has anyone thought about the realities of a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, and what that might mean?

Some are saying that it might disperse the oil, break it up; others are saying that it might push it deeper into the marshes, deltas, and other wetlands, doing untold further damage to them.

I'm worried about the one thing I haven't heard anyone mention: Oil raining from the sky. Hurricanes are fueled by warm water, and pick up thousands of tons of the stuff and dump it onto land. Oil is lighter than water. Ergo, oil would be picked up as well, and fall with the rain, all across entire states.

Anyone ever accidentally spilled oil or gas in their yard? Remember how it killed the grass? I had a spot where I knocked over a gas can, and nothing would grow there again, even more than 5 years later.

Also, think about all the harmful chemicals in that stuff that will be raining down on us all...

It's almost too horrific to think about, isn't it?

I actually have thought about that, although I point out that oil is already extremely volatile. We haven't seen oil clouds condensing and raining now, even though I must assume we have a LOT of oil volatilizing into the air right now. Enough to make people sick from inhaling it anyway.

You might get a little bit of oil dissolving in the water picked up by a hurricane, but remember, oil and water. Not the most soluable combination.

What most likely would happen is that rain would fall through already existing oil vapor in a given area, and maybe absorb some of it as it falls through, rather than oil actually being carried by a very contaminated oil hurricane cloud system thing.

Hello Mike,

You have not been argumentative at all. I agree we will need oil for some time.

Allow me to rephrase my assertion.

This is not the time to open up new drilling areas for exploitation, nor to launch new oil operations on existing approved territory. We have to continue existing operations, obviously, but this is not the time to talk about new drilling.

Things have to follow a logical sequence.

1) Disaster occurs. (check)

2) All new operations are ceased. (check)

3) Disaster is investigated. All failures are documented. (in process)

4) Experts debate the best way to avoid future failures.

5) Government processes are improved/replaced.

6) Corporate processes are improved/replaced.

7) Disaster response procedures are enhanced.

8) New rig designs are submitted that incorporate additional safeguards.

9) New drilling is enabled.

Step 9 is years away from step 1.

This is NOT the time to talk about new oil drilling. We still haven't reached step 4. Step 3 will take many more months, at least.

In the interval before we reach step 9, it's possible that we can cut oil consumption by 5%.

I think this is both logical and workable.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

From what I heard last night, the loss of wetlands caused by oil will be disasterous on two fronts. Wildlife and loss of environment, obviously.

But it was pointed out also that the wetlands represent a major obstacle between storm surge and inhabited areas, and that they are already being lost at an alarming rate to development; oil could do so much damage as to be disasterous when a storm surge/hurricane comes along.

They showed photos of two different areas. One, which had I think 16 feet of storm surge, was totally devastated; another had 15 feet and wetlands between it and the surge, and was much less destroyed.

Supposedly X square miles of wetlands stop X feet of storm surge. So take away X square miles of wetlands, the storm hits inhabitated areas that much worse. Just to add...

In an ideal world...but I don't have confidence we'll get from 1 to 9, Anthony, sorry, not in this world. I think it more likely that somewhere along the line, people will forget, the push won't be kept up, and it'll slide back; if we have another Prez like Dumbya, back to where it is NOW, actually. I don't have as much faith in our government as you do, sorry.

As to "do homework", KaneTroll, you should have done yours. I repeat: Drilling deep offshore would be being done whether they could drill on land or NOT. It's not "either/or", it's "in addition to", which is part of the idiocy.

Yes. I think we're substantially in agreement. We can *TALK* about drilling all day long; we just shouldn't really be DOING any new drilling until we get some very important details ironed out. Like, what if it all goes horribly wrong? What's the worst-case scenario, and how do you plan for it?

If we really wanted to, we could cut oil consumption by more than 5% pretty darned easily, and probably by tomorrow afternoon! Hell, proper tire inflation gets you about 3% right there! Drive less, combine trips, carpool, tune up your car, use lighter weight oil in your engine, drive your most efficient car on your longest trips, etc.

Niki, the wetlands also do a remarkable job of just holding all that land together. Take away the plant life and the root systems, and all that dirt will just get washed away. So the more wetlands you lose, the more wetlands you're GOING to lose. In a way (and how fucked up is it to think of it in these terms?), Alaska got LUCKY, in that the Valdez spill hit primarily rocky coastline, and not marsh wetlands. And really, the entire Gulf Coast is mostly wetlands, and very little in the way of any kind of rocky coast.

In this case, vast stretches of the Gulf Coast are going to become a wet version of the Dust Bowl.

Sigh...we probably watch too much of the same TV, Mike. I caught the mention of tire inflation last night, too.

I remember just how hysterical the Republicans were about Obama's suggestion on that matter and how much fun they made of it...now, if there were 5% of our oil usage sitting in the middle of, say, New York City, hell, they'd be tearing down buildings right and left to drill down to it, right? But the concept of SAVING 5%...nope, does not compute; let's laugh at it instead and use it for political hay. After all, that would require PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Hmmmm, where have I heard that before? Let me think... nope, not coming...

Amazing...

You said you were against my POSITION, not my " tone". That's no fine distinction.

My POSITION has been plainly explained, and even Kwickie ( of all folks ) agreed w/ me.

How anyone can side w/ the Federal NON response to this catastrophe, is incomprehensible. I'll offer the same insults, the same scorn, the same profanity to ANYONE who blindly accepts the lie that " everything that can be done has been done ". Words amount to nothing when the fragile ecosystem of the LA Gulf coast is destroyed because Gov't bureaucrats want to hold more meetings, assemble more blue ribbon panels, and placing its boot on the throat of the very folks they're relying on to solve this problem. BRAVO.

So, fuss all you want about my tone, my language, what ever....but I stand by my outrage. If YOU want to reassess YOUR position, have at it.

In truth, what I "agreed" with was that the federal response was not enough, because in a catastrophe of this magnitude, there is no such thing as "enough". The federal government could have done EVERYTHING, and it STILL wouldn't be "enough", because enough simply does not exist when it comes to the scope of this clusterfuck caused by BP.

You are factually wrong on both accounts.

Obama said almost that exactly, verbatim. And for well over 3 weeks , after Gov. Jindhal and the parish presidents were SCREAMING for action - Obama did absolutely nothing.

When both GOP Jindhal and Dem Carville are saying the EXACT same thing, you have to know it's well beyond mere partisan politics. This is straight up about the environment, about life, about doing what NEEDS doing. There is no middle ground here. There is no " well, one could say... " Bullshit. Talky time has long been over, and the ineffectiveness of the Federal Gov't ( now being run by Obama ) is on full display.

You can be honest and acknowledge it, or you can continue this mindless little game of protect the President, because I like him more than the other guys, and anything bad I say about him will put his agenda in a bad light.

It's in the worst possible light now.
There is no point of discussion here. There just isn't.

That's from the day after the rig exploded.

An oil rig that exploded off the Louisiana coast has sunk, leaving little hope that 11 missing workers would be found alive.

Coast Guard officials said they were still searching for survivors Thursday even though the rig sank just after 10 a.m. local time.

One day after the disaster began to unfold, the Coast Guard - that's the FEDERAL government - was on the scene.

Your position is laughable, and so easily disprovable as to be ludicrous, yet you still cling to it, because it's all you've got. Your rage at, and hatred of, THIS President and THIS federal government clearly shows YOUR partisanship.

I've freely admitted that not enough is being done, because in plain and simple terms, there is no such thing as "enough" in this circumstance. You still claim that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has been done. Factually, logically, all I have to show is one single federal employee cleaning one single tarball off a beach, washing one single bird, to prove you absolutely wrong. That's the problem when you loudly proclaim the world to be all blacks and whites, and no room in between for any touch of gray. When you say "N O T H I N G" has been done - which claim you've made, and repeated, ad nauseum - one only has to show the smallest thing being done to prove you 100% wrong. The only absolute in this equation is that you're absolutely wrong.

Hello Mike,

Don't bother. He won't remember that his position was that "Nothing" was being done while the rest of us were acknowledging that someothing was being done and while I myself was arguing that more needed to be done. (My long arguments for Federal response teams trained in hazmat and chem weapons, for instance.)

He won't remember that his last statement before I protested was that the President was a liar who gave equal thought to the disaster as he gave to dinner choices.

He won't remember that moving away from his position means moving away from apoplectic fits on one extreme and moving towards a balanced view of 'something' but 'not enough.'

If you're not driving 300MPH towards the cliff, it's not good enough for him, and he has no use for you.

Moreover, if you don't agree with him 100%, then he feels you are no longer a human person in need of civil treatment.

Stand away from such a position? Hell yeah.

Mike, Niki and Anthony, y'all can play this game all by yourselves, because that's all who'll be buying it.

No one else will.

Nothing was done. And that's not ME saying that, it's just the undeniable fact. Got a progblem with that ? Tell it to the folks in Plaquemines Parish, LA. As far as they eye can see, from 1 end to of the horizon to the other, not a single ship. N O T H I N G. No skimmer ships, no booms.... even though the US Coast Guard CLAIMS such ships were deployed as early as late April, they've been strangely absent to the areas first hit by the oil. And hit hardest.

Berms, which could help save countless miles of shore line go unreconstructed, waiting on Gov't approval.

So, when you see no berms being dredged, no boats skimming the oil, and we all know about the booms not being layed out properly, you post page after page of what " officially " has been done, and feell good about yourselves.
Quote:

Jindal is still waiting for the federal government to provide millions of feet in boom and to approve an emergency permit for a state plan to dredge and build new barrier islands to keep the oil from reaching the marshes and wetlands.

Jindal is so desperate for the islands, he's said he'll build them even if it sends him to jail.

"We've been frustrated with the disjointed effort to date that has too often meant too little, too late for the oil hitting our coast," Jindal said.

Sorry, Rappy, but it looks like you're the only one here playing with yourself. You can go through all the mental masturbation you want, telling yourself over and over again that not one single thing has been done by one single federal employee, but you're the only one buying into it.

On this matter, make no mistake. I want you to go fuck yourself long and hard, as well as anyone who agrees with you. I got no use for you. --Auraptor

Well, that, and Sarah Palin's mantra: "Drill, Baby, Drill!"

Remember that cheap slogan every time you see that dying wildlife and cry over the dead wetlands.

Has zero to do w/ Palin, and you know it. It's unfuckingbelievable that you'd sink to such miserable low depths to try to give your messiah cover like this.

Again, your words are empty.

" You're doing a hell of a job, Barry ! "

Think the wildlife gives a damn who is in the White House ? They simply wanted to live.

What's unfuckingbelievable is that you'll sink to such depths just to try to score political points at the White House's expense. I've said quite plainly, and quite often, that the response hasn't been enough. Your ONLY response is that the response has been completely nonexistent. And when questioned on that, you went into a childish tantrum of name-calling and hurling invective around at anyone and everyone.

I've pointed out to you in the past that I have no "messiah", no gods, no saviors, no magic sky buddy, no "The One". You claim atheism, but you can only think in religious terms, and are singularly unable to accept that anyone else can view a man as simply A MAN.

Your partisanship knows no bounds. Never - not once - have you ever accepted that Bush's response to Katrina was inadequate (and NOBODY ever claimed that he was doing *NOTHING*), you've never been able to accept that his invasion of Iraq was a disaster. He is, in the only terms you seem capable of understanding, your "messiah".

Where's your outrage and anger at BP, who actually CAUSED the spill? No, your anger is ONLY directed at the President, never at the corporatists who now want to pay out over $10 BILLION in shareholder dividends in the face of this abomination they caused.

Let me guess: You're one of the ones they're paying? That would make sense.

I think the wildlife is probably a little more concerned with who's in charge of BP's operations, if they're that concerned with wanting to live. BP seems to pose the gravest threat to the nation at the present time.

Funny that you try to blame the White House for the actions of BP.

There was no point in questioning me over the fact that the Gov't was doing nothing. Those who live in LA were saying it, well before I ever did. I held back most of my wrath until Barry's presser on the matter, at which point I'd had enough. Nothing and then more empty words while the Gulf coast was dying..... more than I can stand. Should be more than ANYONE can stand, but some here want to offer a Lewinsky to the Prez, because he's EVER so hip and stuff.....

And thanks for showing us all how petty and clueless you are. Again. 100 miles of dying coast line, and all that concerns you is being an grammar nazi on AN internet chat forum.

Sentience is the ability to feel or perceive. ( thanks for showing us you have neither )

There absolutely was a point in questioning you on it. You were making claims that were provably, demonstrably false, and claiming them as fact. And now you're trying to backpedal and claim that it wasn't YOU claiming that, it was OTHER people. It was you all along.

If there's anyone here trying to suck up to the President, I haven't met them. Several have said he needs to do more, including myself, Niki, and Anthony. The small-minded around here seem to equate "not doing enough" to "wanting to offer a Lewinsky". So why were you so eager to suck Bush's dick on immigration? ;)

Your ignorance is showing. Again. See if you can figure out where.

100 miles of dying coastline, and all you care about is trying to blame it all on Obama. Go figure. And this, even AFTER BP's CEO has taken complete responsibility for the disaster. That's still not good enough for you; after months of braying about how the big bad socialist federal government wants to take over everything, and must be fought at every turn, NOW you're braying like an ass that the federal government should take over! Seems you WANT them to declare Martial Law, commandeer private property (ships), draft people to send into hazardous duty areas, and so forth. And of course, if that were to happen, you'd howl about THAT, too.

Sentience is also the quality of awareness and consciousness, two states with which you have no familiarity at all. Thanks for proving that for all to see.
