Humanitarian, or political?

Iran's Red Crescent Society will try to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza by sending food and medical supplies to the besieged Palestinian territory, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.

Red Crescent official Abdul Rauf Adibzadeh said one shipment of relief goods will arrive in Gaza via Egypt by the end of the week, Iranian media reported.

The aid group is also preparing to send two relief ships to the coast of Gaza, including a hospital ship with doctors, nurses and operating rooms and another vessel with more relief goods like food and medication, the IRNA and Mehr news agencies reported.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Iranian ships will be part of a new aid flotilla organized by several Islamic countries, though he declined to say which countries are involved.

He called it "strictly a humanitarian effort for the people of Gaza."

"We are preparing two ships to head for Gaza that will provide humanitarian aid," Mehmanparast said. "Their departure depends on how soon we coordinate with other countries that are also sending aid ships. The process of organizing the operation is under way."

Separately, a "Jewish boat" is planning to try to reach Gaza, two pro-Palestinian European Jewish groups announced Monday.

"Our purpose is to call an end to the siege of Gaza, to this illegal collective punishment of the whole civilian population," Edith Lutz said on behalf of European Jews for a Just Peace in the Near East and Jews for Justice for Palestinians.

The group is not saying when the boat is sailing or where it is leaving from "in order to avoid sabotage," Lutz said.

I loathe equivocation, but both? Clearly, Gaza needs humanitarian aid (not as much as they need new leadership), and clearly Iran would love to offer it for humanitarian reasons. If they can do so in a manner that allows them to challenge the blockade and Israel's general existence, so much the better! Don't forget that Gaza suffers, or that Iran has a habit of loudly threatening Israel. For whatever reason, folks tend not to take these threats too seriously. Iranians with avowed genocidal intent are cuddly.

To me, this is an instance of good motives being deliberately mingled with shitty ones.

Do people even remember that Hamas is sending rockets into Israel from Gaza. This is an act of war. I would guess other nations would set up a blockade when attacked like this. Israel has told these ships to dock in Israel and the supplies that passed their inspection would be delivered. This is more then any other nation would do. In war, any other nation would have a total blockade and allow nothing through.

Traveler right on, Israel could crush them anytime. They clean house every now and then because it is to much to take. They make sure they get their aid. But they have to take security procautions. I think about the Palestian Christians in the west bank. Hope they are getting what they need.

They remember; they just don't give a damn. The Palestinians firing rockets are, after all, heroic freedom fighters nobly resisting The Man, who is kosher. Thus, the rockets are not an act of war, or terrorism, or even violence, but rather social justice.

Screw the blockade, and all other forms of collective punishment (like launching rockets at civilians). Yet the sin-eating alligator prefers the rockets. Blockade < rockets.

I tend to agree, Mincing: Both. It's convenient to do something seen as selfless which also furthers your political agenda, so you're probably right.

Yup, it's both - they want to get aid to Palestinians, sure, but they want to challenge the blockade now that the whole world is watching, and they want to provoke Israel.

This vile and revolting malice - this is their true colors, always has been, you're just seeing it without the mask of justifications and excuses they hide it behind, is all. Make sure to remember it once they put the mask back on. --Fremdfirma

The blockade is like Israel's Berlin wall: a powerful, ugly symbol their enemies can point to and say 'they're the bad guys'. And it resonates.

Yup. And all anyone needs to do is say they're going to Egypt, since they opened up their border with Gaza now...

And really - what was the stuff they were stopping from getting to the refugees? Weapons? Like concrete? Like PASTA? Yes indeed, according to reports, they actually stopped PASTA from getting to the Palestinians under the rules of the blockade. Beautiful.

The same Israel who keeps telling us they're gonna stop taking Palestinian land by force ?

The same Israel who has lied, hand over fist, about damn near every incident from the Lavon Affair to what happened on the boarded aid ship ?
(They actually tried to claim at one point their troops were armed with rubber bullets)

The same Israel that's been caught dumping those relief supplies into the ocean, torching them, or simply seizing them for themselves ?

Suuure they'll be delivered, right.

This is one place the UN oughta man up and step to it, honestly, cause while I know it ain't sayin much they're the closest possible thing to a neutral party, and it'd remove a lot of the back and forth political provocation if the supplies were coming in on UN flagged vessels with observers to make sure they actually reach those in need of them.

I do think it somewhat hypocritical of folk to bring up the rocket attacks as blockade justification when you have settlers taking those peoples land and then calling the IDF in to "defend" them (by slaughtering everyone in range) while they gear up for the next step forward - if the rockets are an act of war, then what is that ?

Would you be best pleased if a bunch of mexican nationals seized Nogales Arizona, and then had the Mexican Army come in to "defend" them by slaughtering every american in sight ?
What would you consider that, then, if not an act of war ?

But Israel gets a free pass while Palestine takes the flak, hell no - not when it's our tax money helping finance this bullshit, oh no - till THAT stops, imma have a big damn issue with it, cause I am firmly of the opinion that if we're gonna let them reduce an entire nation to a concentration camp, the *LEAST* we can do is enforce the settlement issue, and I am very much in favor of putting a missle cruiser out there, and dropping a damn tomahawk on it every time those settlers create one on Palestinian land.

Honestly folks, what would you have them do, roll over and conveniently die ?
March themselves into the sea ?

Free pass? Are you daft? This is a rhetorical question.

I agree with you that the settlers are a problem, however, but would fall short of advocating shooting missiles at them, or blaming them for everything that goes wrong. And on the subject of rolling over and dying, seems to me that this is what you wish on Israel. What would you have *THEM* do, march back to Poland?

If this is a war, why not treat it as such and just be honest and over it? But if there is a political solution, then rockets are just stirring the hornets nest. Or righteous social justice, if you're so inclined.

Have them march back over their borders into their own damned country, Mince.

A sense of proportion here is helpful, they got a country, they don't needs be trying to take someone elses, especially not while we're financing their military with both money and equipment for pennies on the dollar - they either need to start playin ball with us fairly, or get off our tits financially, yes ?

I do concur that if they're gonna act like it's a war, they should damn well just call it one, but Israel doesn't want that, cause it would lead to other countries they've also pulled shit on militarily supporting Palestine, and the whole damn thing would blow up pretty badly, it still has the potential to do so - take a look at the regions history, and consider well what *WILL* happen if another Saladin rises, that could get really ugly.

What most westerners don't really understand is just how goddamn territorial folks are in the middle east, if they understood that, really comprehended it as internally as the folk who live there do, we'd have a lot less problems when we were dumb enough to stick our noses into it.
