Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I've been reviewing some numbers on CNN to see if BP is likely to be able to afford this disaster.

The answer I've come up with is YES. As long as they can continue spending money at the current rate, they will not only survive this disaster, but they will turn a profit.

In 2009, BP made a profit of 16.578 Billion dollars. That's an impressive figure. And that's Profit, i.e. the money you have left after paying your bills.

In the ~ 2 months since the disaster began, BP has spent 1.6 Billion on everything. Cleanup, Payouts, Repairs, Everything.

If they continue spending at the rate of 1.6 Billion dollars every 2 months, they will spend 9.6 Billion in one year.

This means that, using 2009 figures, BP would still have 6.9 Billion in profits.

It's astonishing to think about, but this company might hose the entire gulf with oil and still make a buck doing it.

JONGSSTRAW

BP has an estimated $ 1 Trillion dollars worth of oil in worldwide reserves ready to sell any time they need to. Tens of Billions of dollars won't even make a dent in their total war chest. This horrendous situation that their despicable greed and Caligula-like disregard for safety of their own personnel has created demands they they forfeit any rights to anything until the leak is stopped and everything is restored. Maybe 10 years, maybe more, or never. I've already seen enough evidence of their crimes and outright lies and deceptions to lock up in prison the entire Board and all their top executives right now, and then try them at some point later when the spill is at least stopped. In the face of the advancing onslaught of misery that is coming to our shores, the enormity of ths blight would have seemed un-imagineable before the incident.

Well don't sound so sad, that's good that they can pay to clean up the mess, pay damage claims, pay the laid off oil rig workers unemployment, and still make money for the millions of share holders and 401K investors world wide that have their nest eggs in this company(investors are people too...they have families).

See, the last thing anyone wants is BP to go bankrupt. It will never happen, because after it's all said and done(as bad as this spill is) the spill is not that bad on a money perspective. It doesn't cost BP a great percentage of it's assets to meet ALL of it's obligations and responsibilities....

DREAMTROVE

BP seems to love the $20 billion gig, and since they weren't willing to spend a dime on safety or settlements, I have to assume they're buying something pretty fine for it, like the govt. If the govt has a vested interest in BPs making money, they will do nothing to stop them, and thaf make including giving them unlimited access to drilling offshore, which was probably in the table if someone agreed to throw twenty billion up. Its disturbing.

Remember that in the wake of the Valdez disaster, there was LOTS of talk of Exxon going bankrupt trying to pay for the cleanup. And in less than 20 years after that, they posted the largest profits ever seen anywhere in the history of the Earth.

I think BP will be just fine. If I had any spare change lying around, I'd likely be buying BP stock right about now, while it's low.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I'm pretty sure BP will be fine. Remember, the $20 billion isn't all at once, it's over a several-year period. Given their profits (!!!), they should easily be able to handle that...and from what I heard, that's just the "downpayment". Let's hope they pay everything in the end; at least this $20 Billion escrow account will make it easier for people to survive than those in Alaska, who've gone through 20 years trying to squeeze money out of Exxon!

People will want oil for ages to come, so BP's got a ready source of income no matter what.

As to buying the government, I hope not...tho' one pundit remarked that Tony looked awfully happy when he came out of that meeting, so who knows?
