Valves on ships and wells on land can be capped, shut off far easier than a shattered well bore a mile under the surface of the water.

That's a matter of degrees, and it's "degrees" that got us into this. We can cap on land, we can shut off in the ocean...we can probably shut off deeper in the ocean, and deeper in the ocean.

You start, the desire of those who profit from it pushing the envelope further and further will inevitably follow.

Sig's right; nuclear will never be safe, nor will deep-water drilling. All the safety measures in the world cannot compensate for human error, or deliberate ignoring of safety measures in favor of profit. Eventually one or the other will prevail.

If we never evolve as a species enough to realize that we have to be conscious of our ecosystem and care for it, find ways around our desire for cheap energy that pollutes everything, we WILL overcome Nature's ability to repair. It's happening now; I would assume the speed will become exponential at some point...we may be there now.

As to “not getting it”, remember that any number of people DID get it. Those regulations were originally put in place for a reason; MMS was given the task of enforcing them for a reason; numerous warnings were given to the “bosses”, they chose to ignore them. Look at the facts. It’s a clear case of greed over common sense. Common sense gives way under pressure and greed; the well was behind schedule and they were pushing to get it capped and move on to more profitable wells. There’s even that e-mail:

Internal discussion at BP in the days leading up to the explosion that sunk the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and began the largest environmental catastrophe in American history reveal concerns about the well's integrity and a disregard for a key safety mechanism, according to emails obtained by a congressional investigation.
The original rig drilling at the well site for BP had been damaged by Hurricane Ida last November, and the Deepwater Horizon had been brought in to resume the operation. However, by the day the well exploded, April 20, the replacement rig was more than 40 days overdue for its next booked drilling -- BP was footing a daily overdue fee for the Deepwater Horizon rig of at least $500,000.
Under pressure to finish the job, BP apparently chose a cheaper and riskier method of casing the steel tubes in the well. In an email dated April 14, six days before the explosion, BP drilling engineer Brian Morel describes the Macondo well being drilled by the Deepwater Horizon as "a nightmare well."
A response by colleague Richard Miller reveals a risk that made some engineers uncomfortable: "We have flipped design parameters around to the point I got nervous." Later, however, Miller tries calming nerves by insisting, "All looks fine."
In a brief reply punctuating the conversation, a third BP engineer, Mark Hafle admits, "This has been a crazy well for sure."

...and another:quote] According to the emails, Jesse Gagliano, Halliburton's top man on the cement job, expressed concern that BP was asking his team to execute a plan that simply wasn't viable. After he reviewed a computer model indicating that BP's proposal would lead to significant safety concerns, Gagliano requested that the company add more equipment to stabilize the well. Brian Morel, a BP engineer working beneath Hafle, denied the request, saying it was "too late to get any more product on the rig." As he explained the situation, the BP operation was going to proceed on the simple hope that the well would hold together: "Hopefully the pipe stays centralized due to gravity," he said. In addition, the congressional documents show that BP's team leader on the rig also shot down Halliburton's precautionary measures because doing so would "take 10 hours to install them."

Hayward allowed that a "cause for concern" was an email in which a BP employee said "who cares" that the Deepwater Horizon rig was short of parts known as centralizers. But he emphasized that the company had been counting on a failsafe mechanism called a blowout preventer. The device is supposed to shut off wells in the event of a surge of gas. BP has been unable to activate the blowout preventer.

One email cited by congressional investigators earlier this week showed a BP official brushing aside warnings from Halliburton Co. (HAL: 26.99, 0.59, 2.23%) that the company was using too few "centralizers."
"Who cares, it's done, end of story, will probably be fine and we'll get a good cement job," according to an email, dated April 16, from BP's operations drilling engineer.

Surely everyone’s heard that last one by now. All this shows a complete lack of concern for safety and a reckless disregard of numerous warnings.

It’s just the way it is. Left to their own devices, private enterprise will often disregard safety in the name of profit and speed (which equates to profit in drilling).

As to this not having happened before, there have been MYRIAD explosions, fires, leaks, spills all over the world all the time. The Ixtoc has been the biggest one in the world for years. Now it will be surpassed. The deeper we go, the more these things will happen; the more we drill, the more these things will happen. That's ALSO just the way it is.

Probably about the time your precious free market cleans it all up!

Which do you wager will happen first? The free market clearing this up or the armed revolution he keeps crowing about?

Still waiting...for both...DANG!

At a guess, I'm wagering that either one might happen sometime within the half-life of Uranium-238.

DANG!

Much, much worse:

"Disaster = Profit Opportunity

We now know that much of the financial disaster of the mortgage crisis was engineered by firms like Magnetar that made CDOs (Collateralized debt obligations) designed to fail and then hedged them to make billions.

Now a creepy parallel is emerging from the Gulf. Halliburton which was engaged in well-cementing operations at the time of the accident, had purchased, just 8 days before the accident, - get this -Boots & Coots, a company that does pressure control and well intervention services. From Kansas City Business Commentary ExaminerRomona Paden: "In other words, when an oil well explodes, Boots & Coots can step in and help remedy the problem."

So, Halliburton helped cause an accident just 8 days after it purchased a company that specializes in cleaning up the very kind of accident it helped cause. Dumb luck? Or smart greed?"

Dumb luck. I just can't see BP being willing to cause such a disaster as this for any small profit motive, because there's not enough profit in cleaning this shit up to be worth it, compared to the oil they're losing, the pr, having to pay damages, etc. It's not logical to me.

Again Occam's Razor: "selection of the hypothesis that introduces the fewest assumptions and postulates the fewest entities while still sufficiently answering the question."

Hello,

Well-said. It's much more plausible that folks find ways to spin situations to their advantage and profit, than to believe that they engineered the whole thing from inception as a Machiavellian master-stroke of dubious proportions.
