Hmm, and yet, when Firefly was being shopped around to other networks, then called Sci-Fi turned their nose up at it.

I'm sure these talks have been going on for a while, but it's as unlikely to amount to anything now as it has the several times before they talked about it, before everyone really HAD moved on. Most likely they couldn't buy the rights from Fox, because Fox just wants to sit on it for some reason. Which ends 2012, but probably too late for us to get original cast and crew. A reboot might be the best option, but I doubt Joss would get on board with that, out of respect for the original cast. The other option is to do the entire thing with animation and voice acting, or to do a mini-series.

Anyway, bump for the geekdom.

Hello,

Animation is a big option, especially with the comic book activity.

I also think a new crew in the same universe is an option, a-la some of the fan-movie projects going around.

Like Star Trek, the Firefly verse has room for invention.

Yeah, eventually new crews would be fun, I mean, it's got this Star Trek vibe to the universe, you can have fun bank heists or explore different parts/classes of the society in many ways. We could see how rebels function in the black-out zones on the Core worlds, or watch some Academy students try to break out, or follow a bounty hunter with morals who brings in the REAL scum of the Rim (slavers, pirates, maybe a match up with Jubal Early, etc.), or a guy with trouble from the Syndicate (big inter-planetary crime group that operates from the Core), or maybe some kid on Sihnon trying to get away from the Chinese Tongs.

But I want to see some of the storylines resolved with the original crew first. There were several that were left open ended, and even with River getting some control over her abilities, and the Alliance backing off, it's said outright that Blue Sun won't stop coming after her.

I wouldn't bet the Alliance backed off for long, Blue Sun or not. Governments don't give up that easy, especially when there's someone out there who poses a danger to them, a la exposure. Remember, there's still that school and what they do to expose.

Me, I wouldn't watch an animated version. Just wouldn't be right. And it would be hard to handle a whole new cast, tho' if Joss were in charge, it would be easier, given he'd choose the right people and advance their growth. Ideally, my dream would be with the old cast, and from what I've always seen and read, they'd all come back at the drop of a hat. After all, they're still close even after all this time, so that speaks to the bond they've created.

I'll never give up hoping (at least until they're all too old). Hope springs eternal...and I want MORE!

Anyone else see a trend?

These folks tend to take roles (in shows) that are about bucking the system.

Fighting back.

Awesome.

"I wouldn't watch an animated version. Just wouldn't be right."

Hello,

Animation has a lot of things going for it. The cast don't have to give up their current gigs, because recording lines is much less time consuming. The cast don't get too old for their roles, either. Also, the special effects budget is effectively unlimited, since you can 'draw what you like.' If the production quality and writing are good, animation may be an excellent way to get more of the 'verse.

Sure, though I'm going to wait and see if they actually talk to Joss. Right now it just looks like pandering to the fan base, and SyFy hasn't been doing so well since the name (and ostensibly, offered programming) change.

Even on a limited crew you could resolve old character arcs as guest stars.

Sci Fi used to be Bonnie Hammer though, and it isn't now. Sure, it would have to be a reboot. I was gnawing overH this "who would you keep?" if you knew you couldn't get them all. I'll try a short list:

Summer. Any show is better with summer in it,
Adam, any show is better with Adam in it.
Jewel. She just personifies the world of the show.
Nathan. The more I think about it, the less essential nathan seems, but he is the main character. Still, I can see the show surviving without him, and I have mixed feelings about the character, I like his take charge attitude, his manic phase, but I don't care for his mop depressive phase, sort of like Angel on downtime.

Oh, and Christina, Just because.

I actually think an assemb,y of secondary characters is more likely to follow than a reunion of major characters. A reunion of everyone is undoubtedly impossible, career wise.

It's a curious thing, if you go for the full union, then you are reduced to films, or worse, tv specials. If you go for a partial cast, your probably reduced to peripheral characters.

Wulf,

You could expand that list a fair amount, the firefly crew has been all over the place. Dollhouse, chuck, castle,, and I don't even have a TV.

Well, at least eventually he was supposed to get less angsty. Or that's what I heard.

There was a thread around here in the last year or so about whether a new season would work without the character. The general consensus was no, because he creates and embodies the main anti-Alliance perspective and narrative, although a different actor might be acceptable in a reboot.

Any show that gets made would have to appeal to the old fans and still attract the new fans, so he's essential if just for that reason. It's the guys who tend to relate to Jayne, and the estrogen brigade goes for Mal, generally.

Zoe, Wash, and Book are pretty much already being written out. Simon has kinda sorta served his purpose to the plot in introducing River, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's killed to create more emotional pain for River.

Inara is up in the air. Personally I'd like to see her continue, but that's because I'm a completely shameful shipper. And she might end up having more connection to the main plot than otherwise previously seen, simply because of her close association to Simon, River, and medical themes during the series.

Hello,

Oh, I don't know. It's fun to see Jayne kick tail, and he is sometimes the only one willing to say the unpopular thing.

But I relate to Mal more, as being closer to the heroic male ideal. Kind of a Greek hero, replete with tragic flaws.

Why would Zoe be written out?? Book and Wash, okay, dead, but Zoe?? I wouldn't want to lose Inara, either, or Kayley; it's the strong women who attract me to the show almost as much as everything else. I love that Joss does that!

I can't envision Firefly without Mal, just can't. Yes, I'd like him to "evolve", but Fillion just IS the show to me. I wouldn't want to lose River or Kaylee; Adam I could do without but wouldn't mind having around for the aspect he brings. I would hope Joss would evolve him; surely he learned from Buffy how tiresome "angst" gets...

Simon I could do without, he always seemed to represent the "white bread" aspect of the series.

BUT, could you get the same kind of chemistry without all those components? Odds are you could, given Joss is Joss and his determination to have a strong ensemble cast surely hasn't changed. But I can't help wondering...

Just the thought of it coming back is something to daydream about, for me...

Zoe is being written out because she reached a place in the series where she had recovered from the war ordeal, mostly. Wash was the instrument for that. He's dead now, so you'd think that would open up more storylines, but it looks like that's a no, they took the easy way out. She has no real further storylines anymore, no real character development to go through. Plus, with Jayne slowly growing more loyal, her role as muscle on the ship is becoming redundant. They're putting her on a bus.

Kaylee also doesn't have much of anywhere to go for story and character development, but it's been shown that to do more advanced maneuvers, a Firefly needs both a mechanic and a pilot. So Kaylee is probably staying, and I suppose if Joss didn't kill her off yet, he's probably not going to.

Anthony: I did say generally. :) But I think there's a bit of a male cross section that wishes they could be as uncomplicated as Jayne, that wishes they didn't have to bother being sensitive and could say whatever they like, whenever they like. He's about beer, cigars, money, and women, the manly-man, basically.
