Every morning between 5:30 and 6:00, Gregg Hall goes for a three-mile run on Pensacola Beach. Hall runs right on the coastline to be close to this favorite thing – the ocean. But yesterday, the lifelong Florida resident was too depressed to run.

Overnight, oil and tar had washed ashore, covering the sandy-white beach. “This morning was the worst I have seen – the most gut-wrenching and heartbreaking walk on the beach in my entire life,” Hall said.

Hall went running on Monday, and said that there was no oil on the beach. He even went snorkeling on Sunday and described the water as being “crystal clear like a swimming pool,” but yesterday morning, Pensacola looked like a different place.

He described the oil and tar as being wet, sticking to everything, and washing to shore with each wave. “It is coming in by the dump-truck loads, and it is just disgusting,” he said. “It will just be days before we start seeing wildlife wash up on shore.”

The disaster has reminded Hall of a Cree Indian prophecy that he has valued for a long time. The saying goes:

"Only after the last tree has been cut down... Only after the last river has been poisoned… Only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."

Damned straight. The thing which the vast majority of humans, especially in America it would seem, have yet to grasp.
Quote:

Oil from the massive Gulf of Mexico spill reached the white sands of Pensacola in north-eastern Florida, forcing local authorities Thursday to close down area beaches to swimming at the height of summer.

"There's oil both in the water and in the sand," said Warren Bielenberg, an official with the Gulf Islands National Seashore, one of the areas affected by the spill.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist visited the Pensacola beaches on Wednesday to witness the effects of the spill.

"That is disgusting," Crist said. "To see something like this in such a beautiful place is unbelievable."

The wide-spread slick could spell disaster for Florida, one of the world's top destination for tourists, with more than 80 million visitors a year.

Florida officials have mounted an aggressive beach and coastline cleanup effort to stop the oil from reaching state beaches.

Florida's 1,260 miles (2,000 kilometers) of western coastline is home to scores of tourist destinations, natural habitats and an important fishing industry.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Well, it was a matter of time.

One of my fondest childhood memories was going out in the Caloosa with my Uncle Carlos (one of the good ones) and fishing for Red Snapper. The fish seemed monstrous to my little eyes, and my Aunt later grilled them to perfection. It was the first fish I ever ate that hadn't been breaded and fried... Or caught by someone else.

I wonder how long it will be before there aren't any more Caloosas?

I think I'll eat fish for lunch, and ruminate on good memories that will never come again. Do you think we'll get another spill this year, just to drive the final nail into the coffin?

Okay, maybe this is fuzzy liberal thinking, but these places need to start pushing "eco-tourism" and "envirocations" (aka, environmental vacations). People are going to be staying away, yes - BUT there are people (Niki is one!) who will flock TO these areas in hopes of helping out any way they can. They will spend their vacation days helping. HELP THEM HELP YOU!

At a time like this, if you can keep your doors open and your lights on along the Gulf, you're a winner. Cut your rates, help organize people to come help with cleanup, etc., etc.

We CAN do this. We CAN help. We don't HAVE TO, but we CAN. My boss it on her way to Pensacola next week, and she's staying on the beach, and she's volunteering to help with cleanup. Her father is doing the same, the week after that. And her brother a week later. If I were able to take a vacation, I'd do the same. I've got friends along the Gulf, and I'd be happy to help them bag up tarball or squeegee off some birds.

This is terrible, but it's a time to bring communities together, and I'm not just talking about the towns along the Gulf. There IS an opportunity here, for all of us.

My wife's business has already had a few cancellations from wimpy New Yorkers that have been scared away by the media coverage. They're worried that the beaches will be covered with oil when they arrive in January for their winter stay. I told her to tell them thanks for their support in our(Florida's)time of need. Looks like we'll be making a claim against BP for lost income. If the currents stay like they are then our area may be spared, but if not the beaches will be cleaned up fast, it's the mangroves that will be the hardest to clean and have the most long term damage.

We have so many things to do here that don't involve the beach I cant imagine why anyone wouldn't come just for the warm weather and other attractions. There are 35 Golf courses within 20 minutes of my house and Bush Gardens only an hour away. Come back to Florida because of the oil spill and spend a lot of money. If you're in the Sarasota area, beers are on me.

EXACTLY! This is absolutely NOT the time to stay away from the Gulf!

I just heard from my wife that her niece is going to the Florida Gulf Coast on HER vacation, just to help out. It's not like she needs the beach, since she lives on the beach in Corpus Christi, TX. She just wants to pitch in and help, so she and her hubby are heading that way next month.

And it's these kinds of stories that give me hope that maybe we CAN actually have a good impact on the area.

Mike, the problem with just "going there" to help, and the reason I haven't, is that you won't be allowed to help, period. BP is only alowing trained, PAID hazmat workers to clean the actual beaches; other volunteers are being used for pre-cleanup (getting driftwood and trash and such out of the way). Even then, you have to be with one organization or another, and in some cases, trained. The training is absurd, it's four hour wasted because all it entails is common sense (like "don't pick up a tar ball without gloves...duh!), but "just anybody" can't pitch in otherwise. Nobody will be cleaning birds or animals except trained people, either.

You either have to go with an organization or be part of one to be allowed to clean anything. Otherwise; have a nice vacation, as Kirk said, they need the dough badly. But you won't be doing anything else.

And yes, there are and have been "volunteer vacations" where people can go on vacation and do some volunteer work while there. But not on the oil spill. And you have to be careful, some of them are ripoffs. But most of them (MANY overseas) can be great experiences working with all kinds of opportunities, from people to animals.

I'm looking into being trained at IBRRC...the last sign-up date was in April, dammit, but I'm seeing if I can't still squeeze in. If I could get trained in oiled-bird cleanup, they'd want me NOW, but probably not.

I've also spent the morning signing up with Alabama, Mississippi and Florida agencies, as well as the ones I was signed up for in Louisiana. It's driving me insane sitting here doing nothing, especially after the first dolphin died in Florida today. Don't I just WISH you could just show up and help, believe me!!!

I wish there were somewhere I could get hazmat training or oiled-bird-cleanup training--I looked into both, but they cost too much. Hazmat training wouldn't be helpful right now, as only BP's people--paid people--are being allowed to do that. Either way, I'm going to start volunteering at IBRRC, given Jay is there and it's only a 40-minute drive across the Bay. I'm also considering going back to MMC and Wildcare, or one of the two. Time I got active again; there are places all over America that desperately need people to rehab wildlife, and I've sat on my ass too long.

If I can get trained as a volunteer somewhere, I would be able to go to other oil spills, which we will definitely have, so it's worth it. I'm also going to contact MMC and see if they have any kind of "certification" for their people--I know Wildcare is so small they don't, but if I could get certified in wildlife rehab, I'd be of more value to.

Anyway, I'm rambling...having a tough day today, and I dropped into a depressive episode a few days ago, dunno how long it will last. Mainly, don't anyone expect to just head down there and help; they won't let you unless you're worth some organization or another. They'll stop you from even picking up tar balls or anything else, trust me. I've talked to groups down there.

It's all I can do to come in the house every morning and feed the critters before I get on the computer and check my e-mail. I know I said it might be a while, and it probably will, but it's driving me nearly insane to just sit here and wait.

Niki: Sounds like maybe the reason for selecting trained clean up crew only is an OSHA thing. They're probably getting a crash course in Hazwoper. They're lucky they didn't have to go for FORTY hours, really, which is the normal amount to time the course takes to be Hazwoper certified.

Of course, there IS the mysterious disappearance of dead animals over night to wonder about...

I just noticed the "squeegee off some birds" remark. I'm assuming you're joking, but if not, hon, it's MUCH more complicated than that. I put up a video, but I don't know if anyone saw it. Trust me, it takes major training.

They don't do anything with the birds for 24 hours, because the stress of being captured is enough to kill them. Then they "pre-soap" them and let them sit a few hours, to loosen the oil. Then they wash them...many times over, and it's dangerous, the birds don't know they're being helped and can injure you; you can also injure the BIRD if you don't know how to handle it.

Given pellies for example have tried to preen off the oil, there's as much inside their pouch as outside. So the pouches have to be cleaned just like the feathers. If you've never worked around a pellie's pouch, you have no idea. While I was working at Marin Wildlife, a guy got his eye put out by not being careful enough handling an egret.

I know you were probably joking, I guess mostly I wanted to make sure you tell your boss and relatives that if they just go, they won't be able to do anything. For the most part, only trained people are being used except for pre-beach cleanup or "spotting"--there's a lot of openings for that, daily observation of the beach's condition and letting them know if you see a bird or other wildlife in distress. Even that, you have to be with an organization.

There IS one way; take a volunteer vacation. They're easy to find on-line and that way you're with an "organization" so can help with pre-beach cleanup, spotting, etc. Me, I want to get my hands dirty; clean cages, help build cages, even pre-beach cleanup, but I haven't the money to make it a "vacation", so I have to wait to be called up. Waiting is damned hard.

I just don't want them to be disappointed thinking they can just go there and lend a hand. Vacation there, by all means, they need the financial help as much as anything else, but don't expect to be able to help unless they can afford to sign up for a "volunteer vacation". Just so's you know.

Camp Victor was set up by our synod immediately after Katrina and we've been cycling volunteers through ever since. While Katrina relief is still the major focus, there is contact information for helping with the oil spill at the bottom of the home page.

Oh, gawd, that orange wave is horrifying!

No, it's not just OSHA...it's BP. They want control over their clean-up crews, and the Coast Guard is working for them in that respect, keeping anyone not "official" from going in to clean up. BP's afraid of being sued, as they have been all along. The sick thing is they've been telling their paid workers that if they wear their hazmat gear, they'll be fired...and of course they have to sign a waiver, so it's a matter of "make a bit of money while you can't work and pray you don't get sick", which makes me hate BP all the more.

They have been such basatard...well, there is no word ugly enough; mutherfucker doesn't even come close...about this whole thing, I want to strangle every one of them, starting with Tone. They're covering their ass in every way imaginable, and protecting/cleaning beaches and animals is WAY down their list!

And yes, they are training them, and it IS a 9-hour class, or longer. At least those who get to do the actual beach cleanup. Some of the training is several days...given I don't want to take any job away from a Coastal resident and I can only go for two weeks, it doesn't work for me. I just have to wait. And wait and wait and wait...

Here's the problem (may BP rot in hell):
Quote:

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has brought out thousands of people who just want to help – though there isn't much for them to do unless they own a Hazmat suit.

Directors of charities and BP PLC – the company responsible for cleaning up the spill unleashed after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded April 20 – say the outpouring has been huge among people with vivid memories of Hurricane Katrina five years ago.

However, cleaning oiled birds and tar-stained beaches isn't as straightforward as clearing rubble. In many cases, it's been difficult to find enough work for all the volunteers.

"Katrina needed everybody and anybody that could help," said Jim Kelly, co-President and CEO of Catholic Charities. "But this isn't a case of hitting the ground and helping to gut a house or rebuild it. The needs here are specialized in many ways."

BP has said it will use only trained workers and professionals to clean up the oil and wash oiled wildlife, adding to the deepening frustration over the government and BP's response. The workers also need special safety equipment, said BP spokesman Mark Proegler. {tho' they're keeping them from using it, now!}

Proegler suggested volunteers could visit the company's websites and sign on with subcontractors working along the Gulf Coast. But Bethany Kraft of the Alabama Coastal Foundation said in an e-mail that many people aren't looking for full-time work. And there's no guarantee they'd be hired because some states require that those hired be unemployed or otherwise affected by the spill, she said. {I can't even apply for paid work, lest I lose my disability}

While foremen must take a full 40-hour hazardous materials course, most workers only need an abbreviated four-hour course, Kraft said. However, the need for such training – which so far hasn't been opened to the public by BP – may be overstated.

"All the Hazmat training does is basically tell people commonsense things, like don't eat it," said Edward B. Overton of the Louisiana State School of Coast and Environment. "The whole issue of training and bio-suits has lawyer written all over it. I'm sure it's more a question of liability than anything else."

More than 15,000 from across the country have signed up on BP's official website, Proegler said. Others are volunteering through charitable organizations, environmental groups and state agencies.

There are other ways to help, Some 10,000 volunteers without biohazard training have registered with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, said executive director Steven Peyronnin. Hundreds of them have been sent to clear beaches of debris before oil hits, he said.

"It will help when the oil comes ashore," Peyronnin said. "It will make that job easier."

In Florida, about one-third of the 7,683 people who offered to help have actually worked, mostly in pre-oil beach cleanup, said Wendy Spencer, chief executive officer of the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism.

In Alabama, 5,000 people signed up for the first week of a training program designed by Mobile Baykeeper and Alabama Coastal Foundation, said Casi Callaway, executive director of Mobile Baykeeper. The program trains volunteers to go photograph and document what's happening along the state's shoreline.

"One of the problems we had was getting some kind of meaningful work for volunteers, Callaway said. "They were using a few to do clerical work, but people want to do more than that. They want to feel they are really a part of saving our waters and our coasts from all of this."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/11/gulf-oil-spill-volunteers_n_6
08641.html

I found that article back on the 11th, and have seen the same may times since. I'm registered with some dozen or more environmental and nonprofit groups, Mobile Baykeeper, Alabama Coastal Foundation AND Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, as they mentioned. I just didn't get in early enough and, now the oil is THERE, only BP people can work he beaches.

To say it's frustrating is so far off the mark...
