Not that they're syphoning up or skimming enough as it is, we could have it gushing unchecked for two weeks. It just keeps getting better... If not this one, the season's just begun. What fun...

Oil recovery operations would be suspended for two weeks if Tropical Storm Alex forces a work stoppage, said Adm. Thad Allen, the government's response manager.

Emergency action would need to be taken five days in advance of gale-force winds near the ruptured Gulf of Mexico oil well, Allen said Saturday.

Alex was not on track Saturday to directly pass over the oil-affected areas, though Allen cautioned that " the weather is unpredictable, and we could have a sudden last-minute change."

Alex -- the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season -- formed in the Caribbean on Saturday. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was about 250 miles away from Chetumal, Mexico. It was moving toward Belize and over the Yucatan Peninsula.

"The greatest nightmare with this storm approaching is that it takes this oil on the surface of the Gulf and blows it over the barrier islands into the bays and the estuaries," Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, told CNN. "And that is where you really get the enormous destruction, because it's just very difficult to clean up those pristine bays."

Alex is heading is west-northwest direction and was not predicted to directly pass over the massive oil slick caused by the ruptured BP undersea well, though its path could change.

A tropical storm in the Gulf not only has the potential to disrupt BP efforts to collect gushing oil and drill relief wells. It would also complicate efforts to clean up miles of coastline. High winds and seas could distribute the oil over a wider area while storm surges could wash more oil ashore, according to a fact sheet prepared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Meteorologist Karen Maginnis says the "preferred scenario" actually would be for it to head to northern Florida. That's because the oil spill has been gradually rotating counterclockwise. If the storm heads to the east of it, it would send the oil farther out to sea. If the storm heads more directly towards the central Gulf and Louisiana, it might push the oil toward Florida.

Of course, forecasting where oil spills are headed is not easy.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I fear there is no preferred scenario. No matter what happens, the oil will end up somewhere it oughtn't to be. If a storm comes, they will have to halt operations for human safety. The disaster will be prolonged and its effects will be shared according to the whims of the wind and tide.

There has been a day of prayer to ask for divine intervention. I don't know how much of the Bible can be believed, but from what I've read...

God may be reaching his hand into this mess, but if so, I don't think he'll be doing it to save us. Of course, I'm no more qualified to muse on his will than the Pope in Rome or a Turnip in Ohio.

America loves a winner!

THIS storm looks to pass south west of the DWH gusher site, but who can say for sure ?

Of course, we could have used THIS vessel many weeks ago, but it just now left Norfolk,VA

The "A" Whale is a VLOO - very large ore/oil carrier - that is the first of its kind in the world is docked at Norfolk International Terminals in Norfolk on Friday, June 25, 2010. Yes, I love BP's mentality in both saying "we have all the material we need" and the way they're playing the game of hiring some boats but not others, not to mention sending some boats out to just sit offshore, doing nothing, to make it look good. Where in hell is our government!?!

DREAMTROVE

I have to put this out there, I no longer am buying that this is BPs problem. They should be no where near this. The admin should have this cleaned up by now. Also, they should certainly have it cleaned up earlier than BP's the middle of august. Make no mistake, BP should be kicked out of the country, but I'm seriously losing patients for this idea that we should sit back and let them handle it.

A storm will hit this spill, and then it will be everywhere. I suspect, if rap si right, and this storm misses the spill, we have time to still clean it up.

Why haven't we manufactured 200 miles of 20 ft tall boom yet? Whatever it costs, I'm sure the industrial resources to do it were available, and I'm sure we've spent far more money attacking Kanadahar than this would have cost.

Also, we could have bombed it. We could still bomb it.

Here's my suspicion.

They will never ever fix it. BP will drill a new well, and take out some of the oil and sell it, as this well continues to leak, forever.

And they'll be rewarded for it.

I wholeheartedly agree, and control of this SHOULD be taken over by our government. I've been screaming this for quite a while.

It's been clear from everything BP has said and done from the beginning that their entire motivation is to minimize how it looks and drag their feet to save money.

For the record, however, bombing it would be the worst possible solution, for one. For another, I'm not sure our government could drill a relief well any faster than BP. But to put the whole thing (ESPECIALLY THE CLEANUP) in their hands is sheer idiocy and complete madness. It was blatantly obvious that they cut corners to save time and money (and time=money), why did anyone think that mentality would have changed when it came to cleaning up their mess?

All the things they've done; offering gulf residents $5,000 right off if they'd waiver suing, lying about the spill, lying about plumes, preventing bird carcasses from being autopsied, threatening to fire workers if they wore hazmat material (after getting them to sign waivers their insurance would cover any medical costs), putting boats close off shore just for show, not letting volunteers clean up...it goes on and on and ON. WHY our government hasn't taken over is totally insane, far as I'm concerned.

Whether it will leak forever or not is something we can't yet know. The Ixtoc took several months AFTER the relief wells were in place to stop, but it DID stop. I'm praying this will too.

Where is Bobby Jindall? Seems he's had the authority for nearly two months to deploy the National Guard, and has been dithering and delaying in doing so, all the while complaining about not having the resources he needs, and then not using the resources he asks for and then gets.

Quote:

nearly two months after the governor requested - and the Department of Defense approved the use of 6,000 Louisiana National Guard troops - only a fraction - 1,053 - have actually been deployed by Jindal to fight the spill.

"If you ask any Louisianan, if you said 'If you had those troops, do you think they could be put to good use? Is there anything they can do in your parish?' I think they'd all tell you 'Absolutely,'" Louisiana state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, said.

As of today, the federal government has authorized a total of 17,500 National Guard troops across four Gulf states, all to be paid for by BP.

But CBS News has learned that in addition to Louisiana's 1,053 troops of 6,000, Alabama has deployed 432 troops of 3,000 available. Even fewer have been deployed in Florida - 97 troops out of 2,500 - and Mississippi - 58 troops out of 6,000.
