Quote:

The 'A Whale' is headed South after a stop in Hampton Roads. Her crew's mission is to remove some of the oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico before it reaches the shores.

The 'A Whale', originally an ore and oil carrier, was converted into the world's largest oil skimming vessel just one week ago. Her size and capacity, which is more than 250 times that of modified fishing boats, makes her the largest oil skimming vessel. The ship — the length of 3 1/2 football fields and 10 stories high — is designed to work 40 to 50 miles offshore and collect oily water through 12 vents on either side of its bow. It docked in Norfolk en route to the Gulf from Portugal, where it was retrofitted to skim the seas.

The theory is that in one or two days this vessel can skim as much oil as current resources have skimmed in two months. Oily water would go into tanks and gravity would separate them. The oil would then get siphoned to separate tanks and transferred to waiting oil tankers.

The true test will come in the gulf. But there are hurdles for 'A Whale' to overcome. Crews would need to discharge untreated, but less oily water back into the ocean. That would violate EPA regulations.

WAVY.com caught up with a man who traveled to Norfolk from Baton Rouge, La.. Edward Overton, a Louisiana State
University professor, said his community is desperate for this ship to get a waiver. "We need this ship," he told TMT executives. "That oil is already contaminating our shoreline."

A private maritime businessman, Chairman of Today Makes Tomorrow, decided he had to do something - now. "A large scale disaster needs a large scale solution," he told WAVY.com.

The owners of the "A Whale" said the new skimming approach has never been attempted on this scale.

"We really have to start showing people what we can do," said Bob Grantham, project coordinator for TMT Group, a Taiwan-based shipping company. "We're seriously looking at whether we can go on site and just try to do it ourselves. That's not a good solution. We need to work with everyone else."

The company is still negotiating with the Coast Guard to join the cleanup and does not have a contract with BP to perform the work. The company also needs environmental approval and waiver of a nearly century-old law aimed at protecting U.S. shipping interests.

Environmental Protection Agency approval is required because some of the seawater returned to the Gulf would have traces of oil.

The company said it also needs a waiver of the 1920 Jones Act, which limits the activities of foreign-flagged ships in coastal U.S. waters.

Grantham said TMT was hopeful it could secure the necessary approvals during the ship's three-day passage to the Gulf. The Liberian-flagged ship was to leave Norfolk later Friday.

The converted oil tanker has the capacity of holding 2 million barrels, but would limit its holding tanks to 1 million barrels for environmental reasons. Oil skimmed up by the tanker would be separated from seawater, then transferred to another vessel.

Going to be interesting to see IF this ship works as planned, and if so, HOW WELL it works. If it works the way they hope, it will be a tremendous advance in the field of spill response.

Speaking of spill response, Niki, did you catch the bit that Maddow covered about how much BP spent on spill response technology and advances over the last three years?

Zero dollars. Zero-point-zero, to be exact. Lovely.

But this is really all Obama's fault, don'tcha know. ;)

70+ days, and you're not in the least bit holding Obama to anything he's said, huh?

Of course not. Why would you ?

A real leader would do what ever it took to defend his country. Obama isn't.

Not even close.

What are Bobby Jindal and Haley Barbour doing? I find it odd that you've had not a disparaging word to say about them in this mess, given that they had the authority almost two months ago to deploy the National Guard units in their states (6000 in Louisiana and another 6000 in Mississippi), and haven't even come close to doing so.

I'm sure that's all Obama's doing, too. Right?

I notice you've backed off your earlier claim that it was all Obama's fault that the "A Whale" wasn't on-scene weeks ago - despite the fact that it quite literally didn't exist in anything approaching its current configuration weeks ago, and wasn't anywhere near the area so that it COULD be on-scene...

Your desperation to find something - ANYTHING - you can pin on the President in this mess is really showing. And it's telling.

I think ultimately there can't be any arguing with that SignyM, but post disaster, it seems like there's plenty of room for blame elsewhere as well. I have read about BP not wanting to use dispersants and skimmers because if the oil isn't on the surface then it will take longer but less money to deal with since they can write it off over a longer time period. From an evil, soulless corporate perspective that makes optimal sense. Maybe that was part of the 20 billion dollar deal? Sure seems like we're going at BP's pace.

No skimming going on.

That's 100% Obama's fault.

The local authorities are doing everything they can, but are being hampered by the CG and the Imperial Federal Gov't.

This isn't even up for discussion.

You're nothing but a mindless troll, taking the side of Obama, no matter what, for purely political reasons.

And this is so far bigger than politics. It's our life.

I've not backed off anything. Obama is either utterly incompetent, or he's doing this on purpose, to promote his agenda.

( remember Barry's response .... )

Quote:

(Houston Chronicle) – Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help.

It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.

The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.

You never want to waste a good crisis, after all, to get what you otherwise could not get passed.

Hope for change. Now.

No matter who is at fault, the reaction to the criss has been non-existent. . That's inexcusable.

Even Bill Clinton agrees w/ me on this matter.....

Clinton said the "most important thing is to fix the leak," followed by the need to keep the oil from reaching shore, minimize the damage....

and then "figure out what went wrong and hold them accountable, whether it was somebody in British Petroleum or someone in the US government."

Again, for you slow folks out there..

fix the well
keep the oil from reaching shore
minimize the damage.

BP currently has its hands on the first part. It's up to us to figure out how to do steps 2 and 3. Obama has failed, MISERABLY, no matter what anyone says.

Yes, Obama whirled up a hurricane in the Gulf, just by waving his magic hands. That's why there's no skimming going on TODAY (but there has been plenty going on up to now) - because Obama brought a hurricane up, causing over 2800 contracted ships working the Gulf spill to put into port due to high waves. Yeah, that's it.

Doing "everything they can", EXCEPT using the National Guard troops that have been put at their beck and call. Again, no doubt that's Obama's fault. A "leader" like Jindal can't make a decision about where to send the resources available to him, after all! He relies solely on the "Imperial" federal government to tell him when to wipe his ass, too, I'm sure.

And I'm sorry, but a subject isn't closed for discussion just because you think it is. We can discuss away; you're free to bail out, as you usually do when things don't go your way.

JONGSSTRAW

This disaster in the Gulf is going to be around for a very long time. We don't really even have a clue of what further damage will be done before they finally stop the gusher flow. It will likely be DECADES before the mess is cleaned up, so why all the partisan bullshit now. In 10 years you won't even remember who was President when it started; it's just going to be an open ugly sore on the landscape that will be part of our collective consciousness. My advice for those having a real hard time dealing with this now is to just relax. Relax and go out and enjoy life, and let the Gulf mess play out as it will. I cannot do anything about it, and neither can any of you. Pointing fingers of blame, and pointless, reckless political posturing accomplish nothing except keeping the vile ideological rancor in America at fever pitch. So predicable, so boring...whoo whoo for my side!

DREAMTROVE

One thing at a time

1) the a whale should just launch, screw proper procedure, that's what cap'n mal would do. It would be political suicide for Obama to stop them.

2) the reason that Jindal hasn't ployed the national guard is that he has deployed the national guard. The reason he hasn't deployed all the national guard is that some of them are overseas. I cant see how Jindal is to blame here,

3) i find I agree with less than a third of what auraptor say, but I basically agree on this one. Id place myself center right libertarian politically, and Rap falls into a category I'd call "glued to the red lever." but I don't think this is political operative play. Sure, drawing attention to thijs could hurt Obama, but drawing attention to Katrina could hurt bush, and rap posted a lot of stuff on Katrina. Perhaps he just cares about the south. Or disasters in Louisiana. But seriously, I think people give Rap a rough time. He's no more stalwart republican than hero or whozit, or than the glued to the blue lever crowd are stalwart democrats.

Since John mentioned it, As for the operative thing, I have to say that, yes, when you work for a political party, they tell you do go post, but they do not give you training ahead of time in propaganda.

Jong,

Yeah, they will remember, but I agree it's senseless.

ETA:

On that note,

Blame is one thing. I blame BP, MMS, And Obama. Obama reversed his position on drilling, and Appears to have looked the other way on at least some issues, even without PN's source.

But then there's reponsibity.this is where I was on Katrina. Surely, it's pretty easy to blame Ray Nagin who was pretty close to 100% responsible, but once it had happened, Nagin had neither the resources nor the competence to solve it, and it was someone elses responsibility to step in. That means it was both Blanco AND Bush's responsibility and they both fucked it up pretty seriously.

So yeah, BP caused this thing. I don't understand why heir still allowed near the beach, let alone are in charge of clean up, have contra, of the beach, and are still drilling? WTF?

I like this plan: BP, you fuck up man. Your lease on this well is gone, because you violated the terms of that lease all over the place. So its invalid. That means this is no longer your oil well. Now we will sell the well to some other oil company. Well have have an auction. We'll use the money from the sale to pay for the cleanup. Oh, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Yeah, Mike, I loved that one (/snark).

BP, over the last three years:
Quote:

$59.5 Billion PROFITS (not "revenue", not "gross", pure profit).

$29 Million spent on safer drilling research. That's .05% of their profits.

$0 (ZERO) on spill response technology.

Zero, get that? Why zero? Because BP does not research oil spill cleanup technology research itself, a spokesman: "Instead, BP supports oil spill response organizations, such as the nonprofit Marine Spill Research Corp." Okay, so what's the budget at the Marine Spill Research Corp. for oil spill response research? ZERO! There IS no budget for that.

Because, their spokesperson said, MSRC is an opertional company, not a research and development company.

THEY DON'T DO RESEARCH. (more on video at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#37988133 )

So. Oh, right, that's probably Obama's fault as well...

Didja catch BP's new "plan", too? "Under a new plan, workers will deploy straight from a central staging area directly to a beach in the path of oil, instead of waiting on the beach" Say whaaaa??? So instead of waiting on the beach in the hot sun, they will GO TO THE BEACH? Uh, duhhhh...

Sigh, no Crap, he didn’t say he’s “not in the least” holding Obama to blame. Try reading. You don’t think spending NOTHING on oil-spill cleanup technology is irrelevant? Ooops, I forgot: that’s Obama’s fault, too.

And hey, as to your local authorities doing “everything”:
Quote:

Nearly two moths after (Jindal) requested and the government Department of Defense approved the use of 6,000 National Guard troops, only a fraction, (1,053) have actually been deployed by Jindal. ... As of today, the federal government has authorized a total of 17,500 National Guard troops across four Gulf states, all to be paid for by BP. ... In addition to Louisiana, Alabama has deployed 432 of the 3,000 troops, Florida 97 of 2,500, Mississippi 58 of 6,000, triggering this reaction from the President: ‘I urge the governors in the affected states to activate these troops as soon as possible’.

It’s believed officials in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama are reluctant to use more troops because their presence could hurt tourism. ... The Coast Guard says every request to use the National Guard has been approved, usually within a day

video at http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6615749n

Doing everything they can, eh? DO YOUR HOMEWORK...oops, forget that, you’re version of “homework” is FauxNews, isn’t it?

I disagree, Sig...I think it’s more a matter of “Crap has to be mad at Obama, she he has to use any excuse he can find”, reasonable or not, factual or not. Mike, are you serious with “is really showing. And it's telling”?? It’s his inevitable and consistent claim on virtually EVERYTHING that’s wrong with ANYTHING. You know that. Shees...

Pizmo, I agree with a lot of that, but the government literally “told” BP to stop using dispersants, and they said “no, thanx” and went right on doing it. I haven’t heard what you have, what I’ve heard is that they’ve been determined to go on using them, no matter what. Could you direct me to where you read that, I’d really be interested, since the above is what I’ve read.

Jeez, Crap, you ARE having problems with reality, aren’t you? “No skimming going on”, “reaction to the criss has been non-existent”—are you freaking KIDDING ME? Get a grip, man. BP PULLED THE SKIMMERS, you know. Not enough has been done/is being done, and the government’s reaction has been bad, but nothing is ever going to be enough, LOTS better could be done, but please do stop the “nonexistent” and “none” and so forth. At least TRY! “Desperate” really IS the word for your mindset! If you want to know who’s hampering us, it’s BP:

Allowing nobody but paid workers to clean the beach
Making same sign waivers, but not use hazmat gear
“Registering” boats of fishermen willing to skim, but not calling them up
Removing carcasses of dead birds/animals, chopping off heads of dead birds so they can’t be autopsied
Saying (earlier) that they couldn’t get enough gear to put enough people on the beach
Putting people on beach for cleanup when celebrities are around, then taking them off
Refusing to acknowledge any plumes
USING the CG to keep people and media away, so it “looks better” than it is
Claiming there was “no oil” leaking at first, then lying about how much over and over
Refusing to show video of leaking well until forced
Claiming all along to capturing more of the leak than is true

And on and on and on. Yes, our government should take over, should have taken over long ago, once it was obvious BP was going to use every duplicitous means possible to minimize the appearance/size of the gusherfuck while spending minimum energy on ACTUAL cleanup.

DT, uh, as of June 11th, the National Guard was prepared and ready to go: http://freepressinternational.com/2010/06/guard-readies-as-gulf-coast-
braces-for-oil-spill
/ Do you have somewhere I can find where it says they’re deploying all of them because they're overseas and can’t be used? I'd really like to know. None of the articles I found (including from the Nat. Guard themselves) mentioned that.

I love your solution. Except I think BP itself should still pay for the cleanup. Beyond that, LET the door hit their asses on the way out!

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

By the way, Haken put this up last week, and it bears reposting:

That's a graphical representation of what 25,000 barrels of oil looks like. That's now the LOW estimate of what BP's Gusher of Doom is pumping into the Gulf of Mexico - EVERY SINGLE DAY. Originally, they claimed a thousand barrels a day, tops. And they've been inching up the estimates every week, to reflect the horror that's being reported by their own cameras on the ocean floor.

From what I've been reading, oil renders ocean water basically uninhabitable to sea life when the oil hits the range of 300ppm (parts per million) in the water. So 25,000 barrels of oil is capable of "killing" some 3.5 BILLION gallons of water in the water column.

Every day.

And somehow, Obama is supposed to be able to swim to the bottom of the ocean and stop it all with his mighty hands. Because apparently Rappy thinks Obama is "The One".

Why do cowards on the Left keep distorting and lying about the issues ?

Is it because, if they faced the sober reality, they'd then finally have to understand that Obama is fucking up on a cosmic scale ?

Probably.

No matter who is at fault for this mess, who caused it, the PROPER F_ING response it to do what ever we can to possibly

- catch any / all oil we can that's in the water
- keep the oil from getting to the beaches.
- clean up what has already gotten ashore.

Had this been a natural event, with no drilling catastrophe involved, would we still be fussing over how many life vests and fire extinguishers are on board, or holding symposiums over which sand to dredge? The Jones Act would have been waived immediately, and every damn craft that's capable of skimming the oil would be on the gulf or damn well on its way, and not stuck in some g-damn port, waiting for the Coast Guard to determine whether or not it passes specs or not!

Just like the operative isn't concerned about secrets, but keeping them, Obama should have been concerned with saving our coast line, and not talking about who gets sued first, or which legislation he can pass.

He didn't, because he doesn't care. He WANTS this disaster to continue, so he can use it for his political purpose (cap & trade - carbon credit scam ), and simply because he hates America. Feels we need to be taken down a few pegs, and this is a fine way to accomplish both goals.

Oh,and Barack Obama doesn't care about white people.

( did ya see his ass anywhere near Nashville, after the massive flood ? No. You didn't )

It's either that, or he simply is the worst human being, the most incompetent of all Presidents in this nation's history.

Pick one.

This looks joke a dead end. With the war on, most national guard are on assignment all of the time, even if they are physically here. That he was able to send any should be commended. Someone on the left is reaching here, because they are worried, understandably, about people bandying about Jindals name for higher office. Theywould much rather feral with Sarah palin.

mean? Do you mean it looks like a JOKE, or looks like a dead end? And what do you mean by they'd "rather feral with Sarah palin"? I'm confused.

What does "someone on the left" mean? Was that an instinctive rejection, or something else? I found that information in many, many articles--about the Nat Guard not having been utilized completely--not just anywhere on the "left". I even found it on the Nat. Guard website, AND on FauxNews...which is decidedly not "on the left". This from FauxNews:
Quote:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized up to 17,500 National Guard troops to fight the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but only a fraction of that number has been deployed so far -- raising questions about where the troops are and why they have such a small presence.

A Defense official told Fox News that governors are afraid that activating more troops would be politically harmful, charging taxpayers a high cost for duties that won't keep troops busy. The skill sets these troops have don't match the needs, the official said, and the governors aren't about to pay soldiers to stand on the beaches waiting for oil to wash up.

Don't you think THEY would paint it another way if they could, say Obama's War was keeping them from being around to call up or something? I don't think it has anything to do with Jindal or his name; I honestly don't think the Damns give a damn about Jindal; his "response" a while back pretty much killed any chance he'd be put up for Prez. I don't think they're worried at all, and the information is about all four states...aren't "we" supposed to be in love with Charlie Crist? It just doesn't square, and I'd be interested in how you came to that conclusion. No offense intended, I really would.

DT - first of all, I'm not sure that the wars have anything at all to do w/ the Feds not sending help down along the Gulf. Not sure what a bunch of uniforms are gonna do when there are no skimmers, no berms, no sucking barges out on the water.

There's zero sense of urgency or call to action - anywhere - at the Federal level. The fire needs to be lit from the top, and it's just not happening. All the innovation and scrambling that's taking place is at the local / state level. But unfortunately, the Feds are delaying pretty much every damn thing the locals are trying to do.

A shortage of #'s of NG is the least of our worries. At best, they'd be standing around in some parking lot, miles from the beaches, waiting for instructions on where to go, what to do.

Gee, you don't think much of our National Guard, do 'ya Crappy? Hate to tell you, but they have already been of much assistance. From their own website:
Quote:

the National Guard has been on-site, setting up shoreline protection systems, building sand barriers and dropping thousands of sandbags by helicopter to keep the oil out of fragile coastal wetlands and beaches.

As the oldest military component in the United States, the National Guard is always ready and always there to handle any threat against its homeland and environment.

Wanna whole buncha pix of what they've been doin'? Try http://www.nationalguard.com/oil-spill-response#/photo-collection/380

Others:
Soldiers of the Louisiana Army National Guard 1021st Vertical Engineering Company, 205th Engineering Battalion, load sandbags on all-terrain vehicles near Venice, LA

A Louisiana Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter picks up three sandbags, each around 3,000 pounds, to drop on one of the eight breaches near Pelican Island in coastal Plaquemines Parish, LA. The mission is to protect fragile wetlands from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

SPC Jeremy Lanclos of the Louisiana Army National Guard backs up his bulldozer after moving sand that made a barrier on the west side of Elmer’s Island near Grand Isle, LA to protect wetlands from the oil spill.

Guard Soldiers assigned to the Louisiana National Guard’s 528th Engineer Battalion, 225th Engineer Brigade, place sandbags to reinforce parts of a levee that have eroded due to high tides from the Cheniere Traverse Bayou along LA Highway 23 in Plaquemines Parish

Yup, by gawd, just standing around some parking lot, nothin' to do here...

Nope. Don't have to. I got it exactly right, the first time.

"We're in a war to save our way of life," Jindal said, noting that he is encouraged by seeing that the oil that got past the booms now is unable to make it past the land bridges and farther inland.

However, he said he is frustrated that the federal government took so long to approve the dredging project and lamented that he has yet to receive permission to move forward with dredging at another 18 sites.

So you're saying that you aren't concerned, in the least, that the governors aren't making any use of the resources at their disposal, you aren't the least bit concerned that they aren't telling anyone where to go, what to do.

But you're FURIOUS with the federal government for what you see as the exact same infractions?

That's a little perplexing. Some might call it hypocritical. Thanks for proving my point for me.

Not perplexing at all. By now all of us understand that Crappy's completely infuriated by what's happened, as are we all, but for him, it's an obsession...something about "blind rage" maybe?

Given that, and his equally obsessive hatred of Obama, EVERYTHING wrong under the sun has to be Obama's fault. Pretty simple, actually.

BP screws up, lies, puts people in harm's way 'cuz it "looks better", it's Obama's fault. The governors don't make use of a vital resource put in their hands, it's Obama's fault. Oh, but when those same governors were/are bitching and moaning for the cameras, somehow THAT's Obama's fault, too. ANYTHING positive happens, it belongs to someone else.

Do bear in mind, he's the perfect example of the RWA mentality:
Quote:

A filing cabinet or a computer can store quite inconsistent notions and never lose a minute of sleep over their contradiction. Similarly a high RWA can have all sorts of illogical, self-contradictory, and widely refuted ideas rattling around in various boxes in his brain, and never notice it.

No, you only demand blind loyalty to the Republican Party, NOT to the White House (unless a Republican is sitting in the Oval Office, of course).

For years, we got to listen to you champion Bush and Cheney as "heroes" and "true Americans", defend the Iraq invasion as "the right decision", and call every person who disagreed a "terrorist-loving America hating Islamist".
