nah, just stuff from an earlier thread on brain development in humans, i didnt go into the major energy consumption of human brains and the major evolutionary changes in the brain which makes us human, but I figured when you thought about how recent so much of our brain development was, you have to realize the strong amount of it is bound to be genetic.

Anyway, since you introduced the topic of brain development into a nature nurture thread, I had to give the genetic background of human brain development or endure wulfenbabble about the relative brains of different ethnic groups, which isn't really how it works, but I could smell it in the air, and felt the need to pre-emptively defuse it.

OK, and that's all very interesting, but not relevant to what seems the accepted theory: many traits (traits arguably defined as cultural) are written into the brain during the first year or two of life, and are directly based on the infant's observations. Hence, these traits are learned, not genetically programmed.

Personally, I'd prefer less of a lecture on what seems irrelevant basics and more of a direct address of my posted research links. If these basics do relate, please explain. Links to established research would help.

Shooting down Wulfenbabble==good, but the "Mal," at the beginning of your post does make it seem to be addressed to me, nes-paw pardner?

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

So the word "culture" is dependent on how you define your groups. You could mean all humans as a group, as opposed to apes. You could mean African vs Asian, or American vs Canadian, or NYCers vs Bostonians.

Yep, all of these are valid 'cultures' - but as I say, I was only ever interested in 'human' culture: those recognisable patterns of behaviour, morality, social ordering that we see in human societies all around the world. Defining specific types of culture I don't think is relevant to the discussion... I'm interested in *all* 'human' culture. And the question, could it be encoded, since it is so common?

Quote:

I don't intend to ignore innateness. I see it being overapplied here, to the extend that the innateness of a trait is assumed, then all other possible causes of the trait are ruled out. It's faulty logic.

Well obviously something is faulty logic if it's assumed... but you'll have to point out where. What I've been trying to do with this thread is point out the possibility of innateness of parts of human society and culture - even those that are undoubtedly taught/learned.

Quote:

I would have called such "physchological" traits just part of culture.

I have to disagree. Culture informs psychology but so do other things like life experiences. If you are bullied as a child that can affect your psychology - but that's not culture. Two brothers that grow up in the same family and same culture will probably develop different psychologies just by virtue of the fact that one is the older and one is the younger child - they grow up playing different roles in the family. Also they have different friendship groups at school etc. There are many influences over an individual's psychology that are not cultural (or innate).

Heads should roll

Mal,

You were describing babies reactions to things as an end to discussing the human brain. The post-birth human brain thing is a fluke, but even some of the stuff you pointed out is genetically coded, like the red-yellow preference.

As for defusing potential wulfenbabble, it is essential in this case, because we're discussing the genetics of the human brain. I couldn't post what i did without getting some tangent discussion if I didn't go into some babble about it myself.

The genetics and anthropology are absolutely relevant. The brain is a recent evolution, and if humanity was separated for a large part of that evolution, there will be unpredictable side effects.

I'm not sure what you posted supports a no nature case. What we have is a massive recent expanding of human intelligence, resulting in some nature knowns. Nature differences between humans seem likely, just on a logical scientific basis.

Sure, most of that nature will be cross-ethnic, and could be responsible for personality types. I don't know, I was just posting the info because we had a thread on this before, and that was basically what I got out of it. Didn't need a lashing for it.

As for presidents, lest it launch wulfenbabble, I meant the last president, not this one.

Wulf does have a point though: The moral center was the one of the most recent evolutions, so it's reasonable to assume some people don't have it. The political implications of that as a personality type are pretty profound, esp. in how it effects the rest of us.
