Oh, and just in case anyone doesn't think some folk are crazy enough to take an online spat into real life, remember that some nimrod tried to firebomb my house over one, as I mentioned before, and here's a more recent example of that kinda crap.

Firebombed, really?

Shit dude, sorry.

That does suck.

"Liberals like yourself"

Hello,

There are no liberals like myself that I know of. It could possibly be because I'm not a liberal.

"You should name a few of the factors that you believe could account for the drop in murder."

I really don't have enough information to explain the murder rates in the U.S. and elsewhere. But it seems clear to me that the murder rates are correlating to factors other than gun ownership.

I don't know why murder was at an all time high in 1980 (10.2) or why it dipped sharply through till 1984 (7.9) or rose up again in 1986 (8.6) or dipped again again in 1987 (8.3) only to climb in 1991 (9.8) and descend steadily until 2000 (5.5). Gun control advocates say the Assault Ban explains the decline of murder in the 90's. I don't think they are right any more than you are. The rate has seen historically low deviation since 2000, fluctuating only + or - .2, whereas in the 80's they fluctuated + or - 2.2. That's 11 times the movement in the murder rate during the 80's than what we have now.

I can't account for all of this based on gun ownership and distribution. So, without knowing all the reasons why, I can definitively say that gun ownership isn't IT. The One Explanation. I can't even credit it as the Top explanation, since much of this variation occurred during times when gun ownership didn't experience similar variability.

It's not like I ain't especially fond of the second amendment, hell I think anything man portable should be legal without question, and it should require a special hearing to strip someone of their right to bear arms even if they HAVE committed a felony crime (given that damn near everything is).

ETA: Yes - some nimrod managed to social-engineer an AOL Customer Service rep into handing him my address by convincing them he was an estate attorney with important papers to serve, and then tried to molotov my place, but threw short, and between me winging buckets out the kitchen window and a neighbor with a garden hose, no harm was done.
But it was a damn solid learning experience, and one of the reasons I obfuscate any identifying info.

They may think what they please but statistics would prove them wrong. "Assault weapons" are used so seldom in crime that even if they all were confiscated there would be little effect on any related statistics.

Hello,

That actually doesn't help the case. Or explain much on its own. 1984 was the start of the 'crack epidemic' and has a much lower murder rate than 1980.

If guns were the single most important contributing factor to murder rates, then no other factor could have created such incredible volatility and variability in the rates. But we do see this volatility even when gun ownership has no such volatility. Hence, other factors must be responsible to a greater degree than gun ownership.

I don't know why there's resistance to the idea that a single solution (more armed folks) isn't the magic button to get a better society.

Hello,

I wonder what the magic number is. How many times do I agree with a party before I become infected with their title?

And while I hold many conservative beliefs, no, I'm not a conservative, either.

So is it not just the issue of crime where you feel everything belongs under a single label? Do you feel the need to label me as a particular single thing, too?

I have at times agreed more or less with both Republicans and Democrats, Liberals and Conservatives, but I spent most of my life registered as neither. As a fireflyfan, the term will be familiar to you. 'Independent.'

It means I don't have to buy into anyone's idiocy wholesale.

When I hear some of these discussions of what a good [polite] society should be, I hear quite a lot of fantasing about the perfect society, a lot of it based on some rose coloured nostalgic ideal of what life was like in periods of time such as Japan under the Shoguns, the Wild West, or the days of Knights and chivalry. It seems to me that the times were most people were armed were also the most unstable, the most warlike, where rule by force was applicable. I dobn't think they would have been wonderful places to live, but we do fantasise about them from our largely safe, regulated lives because they seem exciting.

In Boot Hill there are over 400 graves. It takes

the space of 7 acres. There is an elaborate gate

but the path keeps to no main route for it tangles

like branches of a tree among the gravestones.

300 of the dead in Boot Hill died violently

200 by guns, over 50 by knives

some were pushed under trains–a popular

and overlooked form of murder in the west.

Some from brain haemorrhages resulting from bar fights

at least 10 killed in barbed wire.

In Boot Hill there are only 2 graves that belong to women

and they are the only known suicides in that graveyard

Well let's turn that statement around. If you are a 20 yr old fuckwit with no social skills, no respect for your elders and intent on gaining your "respect" by fear tactics, owning a gun gives you that feeling of being a "real hard man". We have that loud and clear in this country(Britain) and I am quite happy to take away the right of that little fuckwit to have any kind of firearm. The little sod can learn that respect the hard way, thank you very much.As for gun v knifefight. It takes a lot more guts to walk up to somebody and physically stab them;it takes no bravery at all to shoot someone from a distance and walk away without a second thought. So I don't think it makes society politer, it just makes it easier to kill someone and then preach justification.
But, at the end of the day, firearms rights exist in YOUR culture and that's YOUR business.Just as here, you will find that the VAST majority of us choose to keep our gun laws as tight as we possibly can thank you.And that is OUR business.

"In his book, Frontier Violence: Another Look, author W. Eugene Hollon, provides us with these astonishing facts:
In Abilene, Ellsworth, Wichita, Dodge City, and Caldwell, for the years from 1870 to 1885, there were only 45 total homicides. This equates to a rate of approximately 1 murder per 100,000 residents per year.
In Abilene, supposedly one of the wildest of the cow towns, not a single person was killed in 1869 or 1870.

Zooming forward over a century to 2007, a quick look at Uniform Crime Report statistics shows us the following regarding the aforementioned gun control “paradise” cities of the east:

DC – 183 Murders (31 per 100,000 residents)
New York – 494 Murders (6 per 100,000 residents)
Baltimore – 281 Murders (45 per 100,000 residents)
Newark – 104 Murders (37 per 100,000 residents)
It doesn’t take an advanced degree in statistics to see that a return to “wild west” levels of violent crime would be a huge improvement for the residents of these cities.
The truth of the matter is that the “wild west” wasn’t wild at all … not compared to a Saturday night in Newark. "

Hello,

There are a lot of myths about the Wild West, and specifically about rowdy towns like Abilene. Most of those myths are perpetuated by us gun-lovers.

It's true that the town of Abilene (population 3,411 in 1900) had a lower murder rate than many modern cities. But at the same time, it wasn't the sort of town most of us gun lovers and Wild West aficionados imagine it to be.

In a town as small as Abilene, the murder rate per 100,000 people may not be significant to our debate. Their population is so tiny compared to a modern city, that a straight statistical comparison may be invalid. (Ruined, as it is, by the small sampling.) And there are other factors that make it a questionable comparison for our purposes.

For instance, I can carry a gun on my hip and walk down the streets in broad daylight in my modern home of Phoenix, Arizona.

I couldn't do that in Abilene, however.

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/WWabiline.htm

"(4) Abilene Chronicle (8th June, 1871)

The Chief of Police (Bill Hickok) has posted up printed notices, informing all persons that the ordinance against carrying fire arms or other weapons in Abilene, will be enforced. That's right. There's no bravery in carrying revolvers in a civilized community. Such a practice is well enough and perhaps necessary when among Indians or other barbarians, but among white people it ought to be discountenanced."

I prefer living in modern-day Phoenix. Less gun control here, even if our murder rate is higher.

It was my understanding that gun ownership in the west was actually rather rare until after 1865 or so bc the typical settler was too poor to buy. However, a bunch of PTSD soldiers flooded the west after the Civil War and took their guns with them. AT THAT POINT, THE MURDER RATE SHOT UP (so to speak).

Also, after the Civil War, Colt saw its revenues plummet, so it went on a campaign to arm the West. Gun ownership zoomed up bc of that. I'll see if I can find the original paper.

Hello Signy,

This issue is one of the issues where I have been informed by the facts presented by the 'liberals' on the board. I used to believe the same things Wulf and Kirk did.

But when the opposing side presented compelling counter-evidence, I didn't just shut off my brain, switch topics, or lie. I tried to absorb the valid information and enrich my opinions.

I still believe in gun ownership and the right to defense, but I try not to prop up my opinion with bullshit anymore. It's clear to me that there's more to a safe society than either giving everyone a gun or taking them all away. There's much more important stuff going on between the ears than there is going on in the hand.

FREMDFIRMA

Hell, I been sayin that all along too - problem is most folks are so damned partisan about the issue that they just flat plain tune out anything that doesn't support their own position.

I mean, were we to rebuild our society to a sane and humane standard, this'd be a moot point cause you'd rarely if ever actually *need* one for self-defense - but even then having that right handy as a check against tyranny ain't a bad idea neither, and it's not like even were we to have a sea-change of social viewpoint tomorrow that society would come any time soon...

And yet, adding more guns to the equation may TEMPORARILY abate the problem, but it'll never fix it, cause it never addresses the social, emotional, and mental causes that lead to violent confrontation over resources, it just levels the playing field a bit, and not necessarily in the right direction, cause the same blaster which gives a little old lady better odds against a young tough thug, can also give some puny little junkie better odds against me.

Sure, OVERALL people are decent, and levelling the field gives them a better chance, but it's treating a symptom, not the cause, a short term plan for a long term problem, bandaid on a bullet wound, cough syrup for tuberculosis...

So while I am right bloody fond of the second amendment to a degree that makes even most other gun bunnies lift an eyebrow, I have never seen it as the end-all-be-all solution any more than I would see using a thicker grade of oil as a solution to a set of worn piston rings.

It's not the guns that make a society safe, it's not the lack of guns that make a society safe - it is the degree of humanity, compassion and sanity that do - always has been, always will be.

And till preying on your fellow man for kicks or gain is seen with the same degree of horror as infanticide and cannibalism, we're not gonna see that kinda change.

Hey Frem, you see the movie of The Count of Monte Cristo from a few years back? Just saw it again--pretty much shows exactly how horrifying "preying on your fellow man for kicks and gain" is up close. Highly recommended!

I think Kirk would be crazy to "apologize and return to a civil discourse". Because.. you asked. who does that? Do you really need an apology from a poster on a board. What a thin skinned little cunt you are. Slithering around here like a limp-wristed rat, with your drivel, shitty world views, constantly lecturing people about civil discourse. Your father must cringe when he sees you walking to his door. Must wonder what he did wrong that you turn out to be some little fucking cunt that can't face people on an anonymous board. How often do people slap you around in the real world? I can see school children kicking you in your ass as they get off the bus. You disgrace of a man. That seems to be Kaney's sole reason to exist - the idea that he WILL NOT BE IGNORED. Beautifully said, Anthony, and to the point. You made the point I’ve been trying to make all along, and I see Sig has too.

And yes, you’re right about Kirk...shame he can’t grasp that making a valid point causes people to listen; making idiotic ones causes people to skip past his posts. I’ve noticed his dismissal of any post by anyone who isn’t a ‘Murican, which is also interesting. Speaks volumes to his belief that only ‘Muricans have the right to opinions, which goes along with everything else he thinks. Given his vehemence, makes one wonder how afraid he might be of the rest of the world...or xenophobic, I don’t know which.

Anthony DIDN’T make a point, tho’ it’s a valid observation, that American cities present 8 out of the 10 most gun-toting cities in the world. But then, the rest of the world doesn’t count, does it? Might never have occurred to you that DC might have the strictest gun laws because it is the center of our government...however futile those laws may be.

Mike, the mentality you noted is a perfect representation of high RWA thinking; it shouldn’t surprise you in the least. The fact that he and RivKaneZit think alike is another example; rather than refute a point, be as nasty and vulgar as you can. Reminds me of something I read “somewhere”...
Quote:

they usually avoid anything approaching a fair fight. Instead they aggress when they believe right and might are on their side. “Right” for them means, more than anything else, that their hostility is (in their minds) endorsed by established authority, or supports such authority. “Might” means they have a huge physical advantage over their target, in weaponry say, or in numbers, as in a lynch mob. It’s striking how often authoritarian aggression happens in dark and cowardly ways, in the dark, by cowards who later will do everything they possibly can to avoid responsibility for what they did. Even more striking, the attackers typically feel morally superior to the people they are assaulting in an unfair fight. We shall see research evidence in the next chapter that this self-righteousness plays a huge role in high RWAs’ hostility.

High RWAs tend to feel more endangered in a potentially threatening situation than most people do, and often respond aggressively. ... authoritarian followers find it easier to bully, harass, punish, maim, torture, “eliminate,” “liquidate,” and “exterminate” their victims than most people do.

I could go into the roots of that aggression, but I won’t bore you. Basically, it fits. It is the only way they know to act.

(For those offended by my use of "high RWA", I respond: I wouldn't use it if it didn't fit so perfectly.)

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

It's kind of funny, too, Niki - the ones here who claim to be so "independent" in their thinking are the ones who are utterly and completely locked into a hive mindset, who stick with the RWA collective "groupthink", all while claiming how "individual" they really are.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Uh....yup! Sad, ain't it?

It covers that, too, actually: Conformity.

As an aside, I bumped across this one while looking for a quote on the above. See if this is familiar from recent discussions:
Quote:

Do you really believe the social dominator who says people should have to earn their success in life? He’s quite willing to let the children of the rich get rich merely through inheritance.

Do you trust him when he says he’s in favor of a level playing field? He’s against programs that would give the disadvantaged a better chance.

Does he really believe the poor can pull themselves up by their bootstraps, or is he content to let them face an uphill struggle that very few can overcome? It doesn’t bother the high RWA that masses of people are poor. That’s their tough luck. And some racial groups are just naturally inferior to others, he says.

It's really quite good, and pegs the high RWAs among us to a T.

By the way, for those not here during the discussion and those who don't like our use of the term, here's a brief explanation:
Quote:

Authoritarian followers usually support the established authorities in their society, such as government officials and traditional religious leaders. Such people have historically been the “proper” authorities in life, the time-honored, entitled, customary leaders, and that means a lot to most authoritarians. Psychologically these followers have personalities featuring:

1) a high degree of submission to the established, legitimate authorities in their society;
2) high levels of aggression in the name of their authorities; and
3) a high level of conventionalism.

Because the submission occurs to traditional authority, I call these followers rightwing authoritarians. I’m using the word “right” in one of its earliest meanings, for in Old English “riht”(pronounced “writ”) as an adjective meant lawful, proper, correct, doing what the authorities said. (And when someone did the lawful thing back then, maybe the authorities said, with a John Wayne drawl, “You got that riht, pilgrim!”)
