Hello,

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that few of these folks own a copy of the Quran, and will be buying a copy especially for this event.

The thread title made me think this would be something positive. Christians encouraging religious education beyond Christianity! How open! How sensible and how geared towards understanding and against blind fear!

But it's... not.

I will go be sad now.

Reenact -- hilarious response to a depressing post...

ETA: This quote was at least heartening, "The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.

"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement. "

I was also thinking that this is just stupid even from their perspective. If they are buying a Quran, they are supporting Moslems financially. Heck, in their eyes, they might even be financing terrorism... Who was the genius behind that plan?

Burning books is such a dark ages sort of thing.

However, unless the publisher is kicking in some sort of donation to Islamic mosques or some such.... it's not like there's some sort of central authority on matters concerning Islam, is there ?

Of course not.

Many Christians I've personally met in my life have been pretty open-minded about EDUCATING themselves with regard to other religions, especially Islam and Judaism because of their shared roots, but also Buddhism and Hinduism. To, you know, understand how billions of other people on this planet experience spirituality. Not to take it on, but to understand it.

Sadly, not all Christians are like them, but I thought this was a move in the right direction before I saw that the thread title was misleading.

I'm not sure what you're on about.

Same here. It sounded like maybe a group of Christians was trying to be, shock, open minded and try to educate themselves about the faith of another group, even if they don't share it.

But nope, it's just a big ol book burnin'.

What I'm on about is the concept that Christians would have any interests in buying Qurans with the intent on teaching people about Isalm.

It's one thing to educate oneself on such matters, for a historical perspective, but I'd have to think that Christians, those who believes in The Great Commission, that it would be very counter productive to promote another message as well. Jesus - "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." ... but let me also tell you about this other cat, Mohammad, who marries a 6 year old girl....

Auraptor,

I don't think encouraging people to buy a Quran is equivalent to promoting the religion of Islam. So only the fear-mongering kind of "Christians" who preach hate rather than love would be afraid of people reading a book.

Sadly, there's a big number of fear-mongering fanaticists, same as in Islam, actually.

But I know that not every Christian is a fanaticist, the same way I know not every Muslim is a fanaticist. In fact, most are not.

Both religions are at their best when they encourage their followers to educate themselves widely, and this does occur today and has occured in the past.

You seem very down on religion in general, which is your prerogative, but your opinion doesn't negate the fact that there are plenty of decent religious people in the world.

That's some "religion" Islam is. Founded by marauding murderers and child rapists, it's many followers are ignorant filthy neaderthals that kneel and pray like retards as they mumble whatever the fuck they mumble. And just what would these sub-humans be praying for anyhow? Praying to go from thirdsies to firsties in the supervised gang-rape of a teenage girl whose crime was blinking her eyes too many times on a Wednesday? Or are they praying they'll be enough proper-sized rocks available for the afternoon stoning to death of women convicted of inappropriately washing fig leaves? Will their religion "police" break into your house one night and take you away to be flogged and whipped for having a radio that plays Western music, or will they take Mom away to be beaten and raped because there is too much of a tan line where her burqua ought to have been covering skin? This is their whorehouse religion; helpless and submissive women held hostage to the whims and sick desires of their dirty-bearded, salivating sexual deviant male masters.

Well, being an atheist does tend to do that to a person. And here I thought I was being quite generous and open towards religion, acknowledging those who'd learn about another religion which teaches similar values.

There are plenty of decent folk in the world. Some stay decent, even after being conned by the idea of religion.

Nahhh. Republicans follow Bin Laden. That's why they trained him, that's why they paid him, that's why Bush wouldn't even TRY to catch him when he had the chance.

Besides, Republicans and conservatives love a good religious zealot, and will fall in line behind one, or on their knees in front of one, every single time.

Read your description of Islam, and note how amazingly similar it is to an accurate description of Christianity:

That's some "religion" Christianity is. Praying to go from thirdsies to firsties in the supervised gang-rape of a teenage BOY whose crime was looking too appealing to the local priest? Or are they praying there'll be enough proper-sized rocks available for the afternoon stoning to death of women convicted of insufficiently submitting to their husbands? Will their religion "police" break into your house one night and take you away to be flogged and whipped for having a radio that plays rock music, or will they take you away to be beaten and raped because you "chose" to live as a homosexual? 1) Bathe, not "bath". I get that you don't know what either of those words mean.

2) Coming to "their defense"? How? By pointing out that you lot are habitually drawn to whacked-out religious zealots yourselves?

3) Austin has little to do with my "nationality". I was born in Maryland, and have never claimed to be "from Austin". I live in Austin; I was born and raised elsewhere. Austin's my home, but not my hometown. Again, details seem to be your downfall; you little boys often seem to have such short attention spans.

But again, you dumbasses in the tea parties have proven over and over again that you really aren't very intelligent.

5) A cowboy I most definitely am not. If I'd wanted to be a cowboy, I'd have stayed on the farm in Nebraska. I didn't, so I didn't.

FREMDFIRMA

*snort*
I can't even pretend to be unbiased, and I find AS A GROUP, either religion despicable, but only one is crammed in my face every fucking day by pissants who'd gleefully tie me to a stake and happens to have enough foothold here to be a significant threat to all I hold dear.

That said, I take individuals AS individuals, but when they get in their little pack with nefarious ideas, well, I feel the same way about them as any other jackboots - oh, and just for the record, with the actions of the catholic church from the pope on down, ain't not a one of them "christians" has any right to accuse some other religion of pedophilia, not till they can come up with some rational explaination for the church of the servants of the paraclete that precludes official endorsement of that behavior.

I hear so much whining about "radical islam" but yanno I ain't even never friggin MET one, much less had them do one single thing to me personally, whereas fucking christans have shot at me, attacked me en masse, tried to set me on fire, hurt my friends, were the abusers of some of my resucees, a laundry list of the most inhumane conduct possible, and all of it right here, much of which has negatively impacted me or my nakama personally.

I think mosta their whining is cause they feel their abusive dominion threatened by someone else like a pair of feuding warlords, cause every motherfucking thing ever laid at the feet of islam, christians have themselves done, and often as not even worse.

So they don't get to whine to ME about how "horrible" any other religion is when I know what kind of monsters they and their sickass deathcult are, especially when they worship a horror that feeds on human misery and manipulates the weak to cause it - or did it never occur to anyone that their "God" is more or less a vampire, making humans suffer cause it gets off on that shit ?

And yet, some individuals take that very belief, despite it being spawned by something monstrous, and turn it to a human, HUMANE thing, but it's not the greater part of them, because of the very nature of it.

When it comes right down to it, out of all those blood drunk monsters though, what carries meaning to me is that personally, Islam is no significant threat to my existence or personhood...

And Christianity *IS*.

after actually reading the Bible and the Qur'an, i can safely say that they are both pretty fucked-up texts. and the irony that Jesus is a prophet in Islam and is mentioned and praised in the Qur'an is, i'm sure, lost on these balanced members of society.

the fact that Muhammed married a seven-year-old just continues the line of taboo acts that alot of the Abrahamic prophets committed. Lot got both his daughters pregnant and Abraham was going to kill his son.

and these are the "guidelines" by which billions of the people of the planet run their lifes...

Islam is the johnny-come-lately of the 3 major cults formed in the region.

It only makes sense that it would piggy back (love that term here ) on existing religious figures and teachings, so as to gain cred' and try to indoctrinate those who already believe in and are familiar with JC.

All religions do pretty much the same things, in how they over write and build on top of that which already exists.

From the mosque of Cordoba to the annexing of Christmas and Easter... the tradition endures.

I will go be sad now.

Same here. It sounded like maybe a group of Christians was trying to be, shock, open minded and try to educate themselves about the faith of another group, even if they don't share it.

But nope, it's just a big ol book burnin'.

Figures Rappy would defend the reichtastic fun.

A third stupid post in one thread.....nice.

And, unsurprisingly, Kaneman jumps in to stick up for book burning, just like a good little fascist.

Yeah, sure is a good thing there's no violence, rape or incest in the Bible.

well if it works... hell, the romans did the same thing when they took over greece.

i think this whole idea can be summed up as tim rice did in jcs: "all your followers are blind, too much heaven on their minds."

and i agree with goldraptor on something... this must surely be a sign of the apocalypse!

Here's a wonderful case in point.
Along with a TEXTBOOK case of intentionally biased reporting.

Gingrich defends 4 arrested trying to convert Muslims to Christianity

Pop Quiz: Answers are in spoiler text.

1. What were these four ACTUALLY ARRESTED FOR ?

Select to view spoiler:

Distributing literature/leaflets and soliciting in violation of city ordinances: and no, this is NOT whatever mentioned in the news story, a deliberate falsehood by omission.

2. Does this case have anything to do with Free Speech ?

Select to view spoiler:

Nope, they violated a city ordinance, flagrantly, repeatedly and after being warned several times, so they were arrested - it was suspected also that they were trying to provoke violence against them to start a wider conflict.

3. Does this case have anything to do with religious freedom ?

Select to view spoiler:

No, the city ordinance doesn't specify what literature or solicitation, it forbids the practice en-masse, and THAT is what they were arrested for, despite their attempts to deliberately provoke a fight, which were met with a surprising amount of tolerance by the festival staff and patrons, who generally let stuff like this slide

Oh, and just as an aside, that Baptist church which has caused so much trouble locally is now boarded up and appears abandoned, I learned of such this morning when local authorities asked me if I knew who spray-painted "Hail to the Overlord" on the back side of it, which I don't...

Them people are startin to worry me, more than a little, fanaticism of ANY stripe is dangerous.
