Is it the point of sex to make your partner orgasm, or yourself?
In other words, does your pleasure come mostly from your own, or your lovers'?

Personally. it's not all about me.

Thoughts?

Like in all forms of human interaction, I assume if the experience is not enjoyable for both participants, then they will eventually discontinue that form of interaction.

I guess you would call that mutualism. So I would say that continued practice of mutualism is important for the continued survival of the species.

Just to add another viewpoint:

If your partner's visible pleasure is your sole focus, this can become a rather mood-killing form of pressure for them to perform to your satisfaction. Very little is as unsexy as feeling constantly watched like some kind of orgasmo-meter to give feedback on the partner's performance.

Sometimes sex is not about writhing but about a feeling of connection, making orgasm extremely secondary.
What about people who aren't very vocal?
What if they're having sex to please you even if they're not necessarily in The Mood themselves - not pressured into it but wanting to give something to make you feel good?

I think a healthy balance between one's own pleasure and one's partner's is best. Focusing only on yourself is pretty bad, but focusing only on your partner can be just as blinding for you and uncomfortable for them.

I like Byte's term "mutualism". It describes that balance pretty well.

In all this, one thing has not been mentioned; what about someone pressured into having sex even when they don't want to? There are millions out there...mostly women. They fake it and never do get much pleasure. Just sayin'. And definitely ot talking about myself. Just felt it should be mentioned. In all this discussion, I thought they should be spoken up for.

I'm on the side of "mutualism". Sometimes I enjoy getting Jim off and not being "pleasured" myself but enjoying the banging just as much. With a woman, easier to get and give orgasm, for me, and of course there's no "banging" anyway, per se, so nothing to "work toward". I enjoy pleasuring, and enjoy being pleasured.

Admittedly I can't judge by any I haven't had sex with, but it always seemed to me like guys wanted to "get there" fastest And it always seemed like if they DIDN'T "get there", it wasn't enjoyable for them.

As such, I prefer women. We can pleasure for ages, and snuggle, and go back to pleasuring, take a break and start all over, etc., etc.--partly because we can have as many as we want I suppose. The pressure to get to the finish line, then it's over, with the men I've been with isn't as much fun for me.

Someone must represent the position that coitus, in addition to being icky, is a zero sum game. Pleasure is finite. If you're enjoying your friction and mucus (that's all sex is, but for VD), then the person unfortunate enough to be having coitus with you isn't. Hence, to be fair, neither you nor your partner should enjoy it.

You have my deepest sympathy, Mincing, since it seems you don't enjoy it. Sex is FUN...and if pleasure is finite, does that mean we shouldn't seek it?? Kind of self-defeating, isn't that?

Unfortunately, your experiments and observations have led you astray. Try communicating with your test subjects sometime. Separate human beings don't share nerve endings, so it's possible that one might have some enjoyment without subtracting from that of their partner.

My studies have also concluded that it is gross, however, so you're not too far off the mark. I've also learned that this now inexplicably widespread practice was copped from a reproductive function, now rarely used for that intention. Only mutualism keeps them at it and from extinction, and so keeps the population awash with midges that will eventually form cocoons and emerge in the adult form. Were it not for mutualism, I imagine they wouldn't bother and would all find something better to do, like post on the internet.

My research confirms that human beings don't share nerve endings, but for the Corsican twins. This is as it should be, because if I shared nerve endings with Wulf, for example, I would be unable to resist constantly attacking my nads. Yes, it would hurt me, but it would hurt him, too, and that's the point.

But sex is more than nerve endings--and the nerve endings involved can be enjoyed without a partner. Sex has a psychological component, and this psychological pleasure is finite. There is no greater turn off than your partner having lots of fun. Its distracting and awkward and unwholesome.

Ah. I find your follow-up explanation thoroughly adequate, and entirely consistent with the standard taboo against fun.

I suspect though that the subjects would have a different explanation, and I thought the primary objective was to try to understand the human perspective. Being that, in the past, imposing outsider perspective on the subject groups has resulted in inadequate predictions of behaviour.

For some people, non-essential biological functions aren't worshiped as the fundamental meaning of life. Equally, it might not necessarily mean something is wrong with them, but rather just that they are different.

I note that non-reproductive altruism is a common genetic encoding for socially organized animals, such as insects, and certain mammals, including humans.

So it's perfectly within the first and second standard deviation of human thought and behaviour. These non-reproductive altruistic tendencies can manifest through alternative sexual orientations, including absence of sexual orientation and lack of interest/attraction to either gender. To this small grouping of people, it could therefore also be within reason that sex might seem pointless, and unhygienic.

Your recommendation comes across like telling a gay man to try women again because he is over analytical/hyper-critical of his experiences with them.

I am NOT going to debate the pleasures of the flesh with someone who takes pride in NOT having them... This thread is about sex and I'm all for it!!! If you don't like it then why post here at all? It's like going to an Anti-gay rally when you are gay, which would be extremly masochistic and antagonizing and therefore illogical.

I understand why you are the way you are and respect your right to be that way and at the same time will always think of people like you as slightly damaged. If you got the parts and they work you were meant to use 'em. I'd say the same thing to anyone who would cut off a piece or decide not to use a part and tell 'em they were being (at best) illogical.

You will not convince me that asexuality is a norm... Deviations ARE normal, the deviant is not. You also can't tell me that you don't feel in the slightest bit left out -at the very least on a spiritual level because I can tell you from experience that you are MISSING OUT...Humanity is a communal species because it is advantageous to be so! You are at a disadvantage, whether or not you have chosen asexuality... If you are happy being illogical, great, I'm happy for ya!

Rant over, I'm done

I called you neither illogical nor damaged. Again, I'm wondering why I'm eliciting such a strong negative response from you, you're coming across as very defensive. When I say sex is gross, that does not mean I'm saying people who have it are gross. MB might, but he likes to be contrary.

This thread asked for what people think is the point of sex, and the question posed was whether sex should be about pleasure for the partner or pleasure for the self. This does not require any particular experience with sex to comment on, or any particular fondness for sex. My initial answer, BTW, was not "eww gross," but rather that for survival reasons pleasure in sex should probably be mutual.

I will not respect any of your suggestions that I should censor my opinion for your benefit, or get out. Nor should I.

Deviant: "— adj

How is my lifestyle socially unacceptable? Who does it hurt?

Do you believe homosexuality is deviant?

"In the modern West, major studies indicate homosexuality is prevalent in 2% to 13% of the population."

"In all of adulthood until the time of surveying (given that surveyed people were of different ages), the number of partners was zero (asexual) for 2.9% of adults: 3.4% of men and 2.5% of women."

I don't particularly get it either Iremist. Byte is as entitled to her opinion as anyone else is, and people often post in threads about something and express disdain or negativity about the topic.

Having the parts and not using them doesn't mean one is damaged; there are many reasons not to have sex in one's life, none of which necessarily have to do with being "damaged". It's a choice, and I guarantee life can be quite fulfilling without needing sex, especially for women!

I realize the sexual drive in men is pretty ingrained and makes it difficult for them to consider life without sex acceptable, but I think calling someone "damaged" OR "illogical"for choosing not to have sex is pretty pathetic.

There are many ways to be spiritual, with or without someone else, and many ways to connect and to love as well. I think your judgmentalism is unfounded and rather rude; what YOU believe isn't necessarily what the whole world believes, and I see no reason Byte should feel disadvantaged or missing out.

"Agreeing to disagree" is not a matter for judgment or censure. I think your judgment is unfair and inappropriate. Just my opinion.

Irie, would you call Chris a deviant? After all, he HAS incisors with which to cut and tear meat, and he chooses not to use them.

There are people who enjoy all kinds of sex, and some people who enjoy none at all. Consenting adults, and all that. Freedom to sleep with whomever you want (as long as they're a consenting adult) also implied freedom not to sleep with anyone if you so desire. Or don't desire, as the case may be.

I find Byte to be different. A cipher, a puzzlement, refreshing at times, confounding at others. But I don't find her to be deviant.
