This one goes in the WTF file...

Just when the weird anecdotes involving Kentucky Republican Rand Paul appeared to have been exhausted, GQ published a profile of the Tea Party favorite that included a bizarre, colorful and decidedly sketchy episode from his college years.

The strangest episode of Paul's time at Baylor occurred one afternoon in 1983 ... when he and a [brother in his liberal secret society] paid a visit to a female student who was one of Paul's teammates on the Baylor swim team. According to this woman, who requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, "He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They'd been smoking pot." After the woman refused to smoke with them, Paul and his friend put her back in their car and drove to the countryside outside of Waco, where they stopped near a creek. "They told me their god was 'Aqua Buddha' and that I needed to bow down and worship him," the woman recalls. "They blindfolded me and made me bow down to 'Aqua Buddha' in the creek. I had to say, 'I worship you Aqua Buddha, I worship you.' At Baylor, there were people actively going around trying to save you and we had to go to chapel, so worshiping idols was a big no-no."

Bong hits, Buddha, and Baylor... In a way, Rand Paul kinda makes sense now!

UPDATE: The Paul campaign responds with a statement from spokesman Jesse Benton that ignores post-John Edwards scandal media realities: "National Enquirer type stories about Dr. Paul's teenage years should be left to the tabloids where they belong."

UPDATE II: As Ben Smith notes, the Paul campaign still has yet to deny the charges, but is now threatening to sue. "We are investigating all our options - including Legal ones," Paul aide Jesse Benton emailed Smith. "We will not tolerate drive by Journalism by a writer with a leftist agenda."

Also, this from GQ magazine:

Quote:

“We’ve vetted, researched, and exhaustively fact-checked Jason Zengerle’s reporting on Rand Paul’s college days, we stand by the story, and we gave the Paul campaign every opportunity to refute it," GQ Editor-in-Chief Jim Nelson responded. "We notice that they have not, in fact, refuted it.”

The apparent kidnapping stuff is troubling (if indeed that is what's being described--the woman makes no indication that she was anything but a willing participant, outside being "forced" to do bong hits by 2 stoners--whom she somehow managed to fend off, and then submitted to another blindfolding), but nothing I haven't seen in college.

The rest seems to be none of anyone's earthly business at this late date.

The implication that public servants are not allowed to do jackass-stupid shit in college doesn't bode well for a sane society. What's next, going after 'em for running at recess in 5th grade?

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Oh, I was mostly just cracking up about praying to the "Aqua Buddha" nonsense. I found it amusing. There's a reason we call Waco (where Baylor is located) "Whacko", y'know. Something in the water, it seems...

Niki, if you're reading -

You said something about "getting the word out" and why you never heard all the good stories about the Ron Paul revolution. Well, in large part it's because this is the kind of stuff the press held up as "substantive" reporting. I try to avoid the lure of paranoia and conspiracies and just write this off as a natural inclination of those in the mainstream to belittle and mock anyone who steps out of line. Either way it does the job.

Absolutely. Now if he'd done this last week it would be a story. I doubt the woman was kidnapped. You can "force" a friend to go drinking, "I need to study," "Bull, we're goin' out."
I don't see anything malicious by the press beyond just being lazy and continuing to do "Rand Paul standard pieces" on him. It underscores how important the first impressions the press make for a candidate are because they are likely to be the ones a lazy press goes to when there's a deadline or just to fill copy, they're the ones that have been established in the readers' minds.
Sounds like a fun afternoon as long as they had snacks.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Serge, yes, I read it, and I agree with almost all the comments...it was years ago, I went through some pretty crazy stuff in college, and it's irrelevant.

When I was in college, one of our professors did drugs and was pretty wild...the class ended up walking through a huge drainpipe near my home that I'd mentioned; I forget why (!), but she also took students for trips to Tahoe where they stayed in a big lodge and got stoned. I know about college!

That instance doesn't completely make your point, however. Many, many things have been covered about Rand Paul and his positions which WERE pertinent and which left my jaw

Same with Angle (or maybe, moreso...).

The main reason I didn't hear about the Ron Paul Tea Party, etc., is that I wasn't paying attention. I didn't really get involved in politics much until the last few years, I just lived my own little life and dismissed all but the most important things I heard, and I didn't check things out--actually I didn't watch much news at all back then. Given there was no chance Paul's campaign could win, I just accepted what little I ran across (mostly calling him a nutcase).

Now I care. Now it's important to me, so I'm paying attention. I wish I had sooner, not that it would have made any difference in the election, and I probably would have VOTED Democratic anyway, given that. But I never trusted the MSM--remember, I came from the hippie generation, and how they portrayed US...

So I paid little attention, figuring what I was picking up on was mostly bullshit anyway. My activism has been largely where the environment and animals are concerned, not politics.

Politics is much more frustrating, as it leaves me feeling impotent in the face of what seems so obvious compared to what really happens. I still want to know, and spend time researching (especially today, when I spent HOURS on it!), but I don't kid myself I can change anything, I just want to know.

You're no doubt right in that the MSM picked up on the stuff that was splashy, and I've seen stories like this about virtually every politician, in that it's irrelevant but the MSM latches onto it--often (like recently) creating a firestorm where there's really nothing. But the main fault at not knowing was mine; I could have found out the facts if I'd tried.
