Keeping order in every verse

For those people who may be confused, let me explain the political geography of my country.

Great Britain has only existed since 1707.Before that, we were 3 separate countries;England in the South, Scotland to the North and Wales to the West. In 1707, after centuries of fighting each other, Queen Anne brought all 3 nations together to form one country."Great" Britain is not a reference to how superior we think we are, it is purely to describe the "Largest" or "Greater" island of the British Isles. To the West of Britain is Ireland. The southern part of Ireland remains an independent nation with no influence from the British Crown. The Northern part of Ireland elected in 1801 to stay part of British rule.Hence the "United Kingdom" of Great Briain and Northern Ireland.
England, Scotland and Wales still exist as geographical areas and each area likes to retain it's pre 1707 identity. I class myself as English in the first instance and British in the second. We still have sporting rivalries between our historic nations.England, Scotland and Wales are still separate footballing nations(Soccer in American speak). In the Olympic games and other sports we compete as one nation(GB and sometimes UK).

So----to recap-----ENGLAND, SCOTLAND and WALES are collectively known as GREAT BRITAIN.Great Britain plus NORTHERN IRELAND is the UNITED KINGDOM.The United Kingdom plus all the tiny islands surrounding us are THE BRITISH ISLES.
Please, can you understand the differences before commenting on how "England" sucks etc, etc, because you are geographically and politically incorrect. Sorry for the lesson, but there are some on here that get on my nerves for not knowing the nuances of it all, before they comment.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Genocide by England forced Scotland, Wales, N Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man to join 'Britain' and 'UK'.

Their leaders were massacred, and their women forced to have sex with English rapists under penalty of death. N Ireland is still under martial law.

50 other nations were massacred to beome part of the British Commonweath.

Only USA defeated the British Empire, thanks to France and certain Native American tribers.

England founded, invented and controls Communism (Fabian Socialism), including Russia and China (Opium Wars).

British Empire is still in control of USA, which explains all these insane wars.

The current queen of England is a German Nazi from the house of Sax Coberg Gotha. Coberg is a jewish name.

Watch Bravehart and the Patriot.

I knew most of that, PK, but not the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain.

I have friends who are downright offended when we call them "English", as they come from Scotland or Wales. I have others who don't want to be called "British", but rather "English". Most Americans, I think, don't know the difference.

I also didn't know that part of Ireland is independent of Great Britain, that's interesting. Thanx for the info; I learn something new every day and it widens my horizons. Always good to have our horizons widened!

By the way, I couldn't sit through Braveheart; if nobody noticed, virtually ALL of Gibson's movies make the absolute most of gore and violence. He lives in a black-and-white world I cannot respect. I did watch the entirety of Rob Roy, which was about the same subject, and believe it to be by far the superior movie.

Arguably, rebellion in Scotland didn't end until 1747. It happened much as PN describes.

Karl Marx predates Fabian Socialism, but it's certainly an off-shoot.

Fabian Socoalism is Communism by stealth.

Scotland still wants to secceed, and is very close to pulling it off.

Oz leaders now want to secceed, publicly.

The New World Order (British Empire) is now the Jew World Odor of the Rothchild banksters, that bought the British stock market in the Battle of Waterloo, and mortgaged the British Empire in 2 world wars.

The NWO has no problem sacrificing the "British" part of the empire for their global fascist dictatorship, since all nations must be subjugated before a global govt can exist in public.

"I did watch the entirety of Rob Roy, which was about the same subject, and believe it to be by far the superior movie."

Hello,

Rob Roy wasn't quite about the same subject, although many of the themes overlapped. Neither movie was particularly true to the specifics of History, though they both touched on important elements of the political environment during the times in which they are set. They are both a kind of "Feelstory" as in "Feels like History." They give you a vague idea of what was going on and how some people might have felt, without remaining true to specific events or even specific persons.

I enjoyed Braveheart, and am glad I saw it before I learned anything about the historical events of the time.

That having been said, Rob Roy is a great movie, and may be the greater of the two. It benefits from what I consider to be the greatest western swordfight I've ever seen. The appeal of that swordfight isn't just in the superb choreography of two distinct characters with two distinct styles, but also in the development of those characters throughout the film so that we care about them. I also loved that the movie abandons the pretense that the good guy must be the most skilled fighter. He clearly wasn't, and victory in this case had nothing to do with skill.

In fact, all of the swordfights in the movie are good ones, not just the final fight. Particularly appropriate is that most of the sword 'fights' last about 3 seconds.

Good recap PK - it is a bit of a jumble. I knew most of it but not the part about Southern Ireland being independent. I just thought the difference was that the north was more contentious.

Well, I don't know about more contentious, It's arguably more about resistance to English occupation and rule.

And factional warfare between protestants and catholics...

People thought ALL of Ireland was part of the UK?

I'm kind of surprised that Americans don't know about the existence of Southern Ireland or Eire, given the links between the two countries.

AS a a bit of background, the Irish have been trying to shrug off English rule for centuries - each generation had its own rebellion, which usually ended in defeat. Along with a number of unpleasant policies, such as banning Irish language and customs, allocating great chunks of land to English nobles, the English also encouraged immigration to Ireland, and they tended to settle in the north, but not exclusively. The settlers were Protestant, which also set them apart from the Irish who were Catholic. Over the years, they identified themselves as irish Protestants, or Orangemen,

Ireland fought the Irish War of Independance in 1921, and seceded from Britain, except for the Northern Counties which had a large population of Orangemen - known as the Six Counties. This plunged the free Ireland into a bloody civil war.

Eire is an independent country, with a President and its own parliament, whereas Northern Ireland remains part of the UK, ruled by the British PM. The terrorism that we associate with the Irish has been the Irish Republican Army or offshoots thereof, fighting against the British occupation - as they see it - of Northern Ireland.

Interestingly enough, many 'terrorist' tactics were first commonly used by the Irish against the English in the Irish War of Independence.

'Michael Collins' is a great film that explores this era of war in Ireland. I can highly recommend.

I can't talk about The Patriot as I haven't seen it, but Braveheart was a great piece of cinema.
Unfortunately, it is historically BOLLOCKS!!! The bit when Mel Gibson is shouting "Freedom" as Edward 1st is on his death bed is utter rubbish.Edward 1st died in battle years after Wallace met his end, and to suggest that Edward 2nd ended up Father tp Wallace's child is utter insanity.
I hate cinematic license in rewriting factual history, simply because a lot of kids watch these films in the place of actual teaching, and are grossly misled.

Pirate News your right on. The Peacekeeper white washes "Jolly Ole England" with her Norman veiw of things. The true English are the Welsh who where sold out by their leaders hundreds of years ago. They had been pushed to the west by the anglos then saxons the descendants of germanic tribes. Who were later conquered by the bastard children of Romans, Gauls, and Franks. They are called Normans. The southern English the Romano British children accepted defeat. They miss good ole Rome that is why they went catholic before the Normans showed up with their big swords. King Willy conquered and his grandson King Henry II made a country. This is when the Robin Hood story kicks off with Henry's queer son Richard and John. Then the Magna Carter is written. The end of tyrants and the beginning of law. Then the Virgin Queen pops up later and starts England as a Nation. She had her private pirates called the Royal Navy. Who molested merchants ships headed from Africa to the Carolinas. Most of the workers never reached the new world due to the sailors of the Royal Navy. After the African men had pleasured the blue eyed devils from Liverpool they dumped them in the Atlantic for shark bait. Which to this day the sharks hunting grounds still travel the old trade paths from Africa to America. Now the Scottish made deals to rule over themselves like in the movie Braveheart. Now what happened in Northern Ireland is later with Cromwell a true english men of today's stature. Cromwell was pure evil. Not a lime or a proggie, must be murdered. They killed most of the farmers and their families in Northern Ireland. Then put their Scottish Toads on their land to manage the fields. The few of the catholic irish from the north ended up hiding with the black irish in western Ireland. This is where some of the Spanish Armada crashed after the storm in the english channel that saved England from being conquered by King Philip of Spain. He was catholic and wanted Queen Elizabeth the proggie off the thrown. Between one and three generations the Scotch Irish realized the limes had duped them again. They immigrated to the southern colonies. This is where the mason connection is with the south. Look at the British flag. King George's cross is over the scottish x flag and the welsh flag. United Kingdom of Great Britain all kingdoms are under King George. The Conferderate Battle Flag or Rebel Flag has the X symbol. Now also the Texas forefathers are from the Virginia, Carolinas, and Tennesse. There ya go. The Alamo. Now alittle back The Patriot is very historically accurate. Brits invade Charleston then Camden falls they are pushed across the Pee Dee River [South and North Carolina Borders] the mericans to Cow Pens. The low land Patriots where not as tuff or harden as the mountain men of the Smokies and Blue Ridge. Then the British Army is stunned at Kings Mt outside of Charlotte NC. Major Tarlington a real person from Liverpool by the way was killed there. Now the Royal Army is not beaten but bloodied. They moved back to Greensboro the Guilford Courthouse battle the house in the Patriot movie. The Brits hurt, hungry, and running low on ammo run to Yorktown. Where GW and LaFayette with free black men are waiting. The Brits cut off on all sides the James River is Blocked by the French Navy. They saved the day believe it or not. The Royal Navy headed back to New York. The Royals thought we would pay taxes to pay for the French and Indian War. Which GW kinda started at Mckees Rocks in PA when he killed Duquesne of France while working for the Virginia Fur Company. Another story for another day. The English thought that the South would be friendly to the English because they where in trade with them while as the North was in competition with the British in trade and goods. GW owned the country side and the Brits controlled the cities of the north a stalemate. So hey will end the rebellion by heading south and defeating the other half of the colonies. Big mistake the Scotch Irish of
the South hadn't forgot why they left Ireland. And poor Irish catholics sucking on raw taters got the fungi brought in by the limes died in the millions from starvation. When America offered free indigo [rice no 1 crop at that time] or wheat nope them evil limes said it would effect their commodity prices. The royals ya gotta to love em. That is your true English History. Maybe alittle out of order but truthfull none the less. These people have crooked teeth, big ears, and put vinegar on fries give me a break.

In all of PN's rambling, paranoid madness, he nearly got one fact right, the British royals are almost entirely of German descent - the german Hanoverian dynasty suceeded the Stuarts in the 1700's and Victoria, a descendant of that line married Prince Albert of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha line - the German royal house. She married off her many offspring to almost every royal house in Europe, making her the matriarch of modern European monarchy. You can actually look at WW1 as a huge, out of control family squabble, as her descendants were pretty much the major players in the war, albeit on different sides. The British Monarchy changed their name from Saxe Coburg Gotha to Windsor during WW1 to distance themselves from their German origins.

PN confuses the fact that the British royals are of German descent, with Nazism - as many truly stupid people do. German does not = Nazi. Although the Queen's uncle - the former King Edward the 8th was indeed a nazi sympathiser, his brother George the 6th was not, hence Britain's stand in ww2 in opposing and fighting against Nazi Germany.

Thanx, Magons, I didn't know all that.

I spent one entire Summer years ago checking books out of the library and following the entire British "line". I've forgotten almost everything I read; I remember that there were lots of "marriages of state" between royals of different countries, and I remember it was full of people trying to unseat each other, etc. That's it. All gone; one entire Summer!

The history of the British Empire reads pretty much like any other empire - including the current American one. It may have a different type of government and a different 'flavour' but it's still pretty much the same. Big powerful countries exploit smaller, weaker ones for the purpose of their own well being and prosperity. Most (all?) of the European powers had their own Empires at that time, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium were all carving up the world into bits of bounty for themselves.

Britain, like America of recent times, believed they were a force for good in the world, bringing civilisation to ignorant and backward peoples, as they saw them. At the same time, making lots of dough.

Judge not, lest ye be judged also.

The American empire is a whole lot different from the English one. If y'all hadn't a dragged us into two world wars over bad treaties amongst monarchs we wouldn't have had to police the world. I thought America got "dragged" in to the Second World War because it appeased Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire for too long so that they grew strong enough to think that they were able to overwhelm all the Allies. Obviously they were wrong but it was a close thing. And it entered the First World War because the German Empire started attacking their shipping lanes and asked Mexico to attack the U.S.

Nothing really to do with treaties about monarchs on the U.S. side of things. Although I agree that the First World War was started because of treaties and imperialism, the united States had little to do with that; which is probably why they never declared war on the Ottoman Empire.

Sorry, Aliasse, I did think it was all of Ireland which wanted to be free of the British; many Americans are ignorant of the rest of the world and, tho' I try not to be, I missed that one. I don't think I'm the only one who misunderstood that.

I agree with Anthony; if we wnt this thread to devolve into a discussion of the idiocy of the military and governments, we could go back and forth all day trying to decide which "empire" was the worst. I'm not about to do that.

By the way, CatPirate, "your wrong" belongs to you and nobody else, nobody is "ignant" but you. YOU are ( as in "you're") wrong in so many of the things I bothered to read that you wrote that it is a shame. "Your" ignorance of the English language betrays your claim of wisdom, and "your" obvious bias denies you credibility.

By the way, "Aliasse", neat trick making it so that clicking on your name brings up not your profile, but an e-mail, so that it can't be checked when you joined or where you've posted.

God, I wish I hadn't bothered studying History at university for three years. If only I'd known of you, I could have learnt everything I need to know in the time it took to read (and re-read I have to say mate - not always entirely clear) this masterpiece of potted history. I found the fact that Cromwell was active in Northern Ireland particularly illuminating.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I don't know what happened, but now it DOES go to your profile, and I see you've been here a couple of years, which puts my mind at rest and I apologize for doubting you. Previously, I tried several times, and each time it opened a new window in my e-mail with an e-mail address and a blank page to write an e-mail. Whatever, it's of no importance, but I'm glad you're not a sockpuppet.

Yes, I know what IRA stands for, but calling your group a "Republic" doesn't necessarily mean anything, I'm sure you know that. I knew there was a North and South Ireland, and that one was mostly Protestant and the other Catholic and strife between them and between a portion of Ireland and England. But no, I didn't know part of Ireland was independent; all the more reason to let ALL of it be independent, in my mind. Empires die hard, that's all I can say. I'm sure there are reasons those connected to the British Empire want to stay that way, and it's none of my business. I just wish it could be less of a problem for all involved.

I'm going to ask a few people and see just how unique my ignorance is, because I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. Like I said, Americans are astonishingly ignorant of the world, and it's a damned shame.

The "Irish influence" over here is strongest by far in the East; out here, not nearly so much. Oh, we have St. Patty's Day gatherings, but not even a parade, I don't think. The influences on our Coast are much more of the Asian variety. So I'm not sure there's much "Irish" influence at all, tho' I can't speak to that.

Isn't that one of the best things about the Internet, that we can learn about each other and the stuff that wasn't taught in school.

I know my European history, but not so much about the USA, other than the cliches that are trotted out in film. Mind you, I read a lot of American literature. "Cold Mountain" is one of my favourite books.

Believe me, I don't have to TRY to make fun of you. And I don't put any American fruit on my "English" muffins because I'm NOT a Pom. And our cows are just as sane as any other citizen.

I appreciate what you mean. But on the other hand the knowledge gained in this way can be fragmented and out of context. Learning about history online is a bad way of doing it. A little knowledge is so often the excuse for holding a very unhumble attitude towards all the stuff that isn't known.

Yes, of course.

I'm sure you're not alone. You must be aware that Americans have a reputation for astonishing ignorance of the world; a stereotype I try not to buy into. Or put it this way, I appreciate that it's the flip side of everything that's great about them.
