DREAMTROVE

The ballot was very confusing though. It was like an SAT, only done in pen, so once marked, it couldn't be undone, and then it was fed through a scantron. The confusing part was that third party candidates were in a second column, and in the first column were redundant party lines for Democrat and Republican. So, if you scrolled down to Libertarian, and filled the oval directly to the right of that, you voted for the Democrat. If you then X-ed that out and filled in libertarian, you still voted for the democrat. So you really had to be very careful not to make any errors. Given that people will make mistakes, and some older people will have vision problems, a lot of would-be third party votes will be counted as Dem or GOP.

I voted for 2 Dems, 2 Greens, 1 Libertarian, 1 Republican and 1 Rent is too damn high.

I voted for the Green, an avowed Socialist for Governor. He was the only one who was willing to uphold my libertarian right to clean drinking water.

I voted for 2 dems on the environment issue, The libertarian for peace, the Republican, ironically, for peace. The Rent is too damn high guy because he was local.

The candidates I voted for were all around winners. This wasn't really a lesser of two evils situation. It made me feel good, sort of like buying circus tickets at the Elephant and Jackass show, but the process was clearly screwed and it was very nervous making. You knew that you could read the issues and find decent people to vote for, and then TPTB would declare whomever they wanted as the winner.

Also, NY has like 14 ballot lines, which a lot of you won't have. Many states have only the major two plus one or two third parties.

As a system, it's hopeless. If I could have voted for the policies rather than the people, I think the results would be different. If people had to go to the polls and vote "Yes, I want to invade Iran, and Yes, I want to give another 700 billion to Citigroup, and Yes, I want a toxic waste site half a mile from my home" then there's just a chance that they wouldn't vote that way.

But it all comes down to blue v. red, and they vote for those policies unintentionally.

Well, my feeling on it is, if I vote Green or Socialist, that's sending a message to both major parties. If I vote Libertarian, that too sends a message. One says I'm to the left of both parties, and want it known. The other says I'm unhappy with both parties for similar reasons, and want it known.

Not voting at all sends a message too - but nobody will hear it or have any idea what it means.

If some Democrat wins, but a Green posts up 20% of the votes in that election, it tells the Dem he'd better start listening to the Greens. But if 20% of the people don't even show up, should you listen to them? If so, what's their message?

But by all means, feel free to not vote. It makes MY vote count all the more. Just think - I might believe in things you vehemently oppose. And by me showing up, and you not bothering, I just scored TWO votes for my side, because you didn't even bother to cancel me out.
