DREAMTROVE

My mom fell down suddenly, fainted, and fell head first off a walkway and onto the pavement. At the moment it looks like she's okay, just some broken bones, but very scary. When I found her she was just lying in a big pool of blood. It's a really nightmare scenario. Her shoulder hit first, which is now her biggest problem, but probably also a life saving accident of random chance. The doctor said the passing out happened as the result of a feedback mechanism gone awry. Intense pain runs a signal through a nerve which vasoconstricts blood to brain, increasing pressure, which would increase oxygen, until it constricts too far, and then it cuts off oxygen. A torn knee muscle seems to be the culprit which caused the pain. Life is fragile.

I am SO sorry, DT. I hope she recovers quickly, with good care and no pain. You ok?

That's really scary DT. Fainting spells really are dangerous. I hope she heals quickly!

Oh, man, I know what you mean, and I'm SO sorry, for both of you, but especially her. How old is she? It's especially dangerous (and awful) for people my age and older; in some cases, it can mean the end of life, 'cuz we never recover.

My mom was in a residential facility, an apartment which was self-sufficient. She had an episode caused by dehydration, and they found her the next day in the closet, completely out of it. Was awful...and after that she had to be transferred to a less independent facility.

Once she became anally incontinent, we couldn't afford to keep her in that high-intensive-care a unit, so we brought her home and I took care of her. My bedroom was under hers, and she used to walk around in the night, so one night when I heard her moving around, I thought that's all it was. Next morning we discover she'd had a stroke and fallen out of bed; the noises I heard were her trying to get up or get help. That was horrific, and she never regained the ability to walk again. It breaks your heart, I know (and I didn't even LIKE my mother), and is awfully scary. I hope she has good (and as quick as can be hoped for!) recuperation and is okay again. You both have my deepest sympathy AND empathy!!

Thanks everyone. If anyone has any suggestions...

The main problem is the broken collar bone. I don't know if it can be set or not.

Things have gotten radically worse. I just lost a dear friend to senseless violence. Apparently this happened around the same time. Very bad karma. I just needed to talk, and the forum was just here, so I'm posting.

Sorry for your mom.

I watched an old guy do a slo-mo topple off a small stairway that didn't have a railing. Something was wrong with his balance, blood sugar perhaps. No major injury, but could've been killed. Can't remember what my aunt the neurologist did to help...maybe she ran away?

For my mom we use a baby monitor and a handheld remote control security system alert via the phone system. She had an achilles tendon snap, but just fell back in a chair, apparently a side effect to a med. If she'd quit taking all her drugs, stop listening to MDs, visit a chiro, start juicing, fasting and sauna, I bet her sicknesses would improve.

Possibly, depedends on her condition. You sometimes have to be very careful getting people off the Rx because the withdrawal effects can be deadlier than the side effects.

My mom collapsed through a chain reaction. The muscle tear was the more minor injury, but it caused a lot of pain. The build up of pain sends a signal through your vagus nerve to the brain which sends a parasympathetic signal back to your heart, selectively vasoconstricting the blood vessel that goes to the brain. I think this is part of the fight or flight response, but too much constriction causes it to shut off. then you black out. The Dr was sure that this was what had happened because the vessel I think it was the vena cava, was still highly constricted.

Hey, DT, as far as I'm concerned, I think it's GREAT that you vented here! That's actually most of what the website I run is for. Sharing something, responses or not, can be a useful tool in dealing with fear, pain, loss, etc. And getting support can help, again reducing it. Neither can do MUCH most of the time, admittedly, but you know how our brains work, so you probably know about all this.

We have people disappear from our board for months, sometimes years, but they always know that if they need support or just a place to share or vent, we're there, and they always come back. Usually they stick around for a while and respond to others, but they disappear again. It's not a problem; there are enough of us regulars always there so the forums never disappear, and we're actually GLAD to see them go...when things are good, it's great that people can be out there having a life, not stuck in their rooms posting on a website, and we know they'll be back when the need arises.

Of course, our forums are specifically for people with mental disorders, so the need for support is different from here, but the concept is somewhat the same in this instance.

Us regulars use it for a different purpose (as well as the same); we're all pretty isolated and it's our social interaction, as this place is for me. IF we could get out and have real life social interaction, we wouldn't need it as much; those who come and go CAN.

Anyway, I think it's great you used FFF for a need like this, and I hope just sharing and/or getting some support helps in some small way.

I don't have any suggestions, unfortunately, but maybe one of those "life alert" thingies might be something to consider. Wouldn't help if she passes out, but there are so many other things that can go wrong when nobody else is around, it might be worth looking into. For any older person living alone, they can be life savers.

I hope she mends quickly.

Upon first reading, I thought you were talking about RWED being specifically made for people with mental disorders. Then I realized you were talking about your other website.

Bwahahahaha. It sure feels like it sometimes here on RWED, doesn't it?

Well, I wasn't going to mention it...

But yes, the corollary between those of us on our site who go away and live "lives" and only come back when they need us being better than sitting in a room on the computer, DID make me want to say something about people who have no life and sit around in a (darkened?) room on the computer coming here to do nothing but troll...

That's not social interaction, in case they hadn't noticed.

Those of us on our website are FRIENDS, and get social interaction by communicating on the forums with other friends...one thing totally missing from our site is what you find here. We disagree on politics, some are on exactly the opposite side from one another, but we debate civilly. Which is how people get meaningful social interaction. (/lecture)
