The wife of a top county official tried to hide almost $80,000 from the FBI - by stuffing it in her underwear.

City council member Leslie Johnson was also told by her husband to flush a $100,000 cheque down the toilet after federal agents turned up at the family home.

The FBI was investigating bribery and corruption allegations against Maryland’s Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson.

In a court affadafit, FBI agents wrote that they recorded a panicky cell phone conversation between the Johnsons moments after the feds knocked at their door.

‘Tear it up! That is the only thing you have to do,’ Johnson told his wife, referring to a $100,000 cheque from a real estate developer, according to prosecutors.

Asked by his wife about ‘cash down in the basement,’ the documents say Johnson, 61, replied, ‘Put it in your bra and walk out or something, I don't know what to do.’

Then Johnson allegedly told his 58-year-old wife to get rid of the cheque down the toilet. ‘Yes, flush that,’ he said.

When they searched Johnson’s wife, who was recently elected to the county council, they recovered $79,600 in cash from her underwear, officials said.

The couple were arrested and later charged with witness and evidence tampering and destruction, alteration and falsification of records in a federal investigation.

The could face up to 20 years behind bars if they are convicted.

The charges grew out of a five-year investigation into allegations of property developers in the county offering rewards to county officials in exchange for personal and business favours.

Prince George's County borders Washington D.C. and is the wealthiest county in the U.S. with an African-American majority.

US Attorney Rod Rosenstein said authorities have tapped Jack Johnson's phone since January 2010. Prosecutors expect more charges to be filed and more people to be charged.

Johnson has been county executive since 2002 and his term ends in three weeks.

The Democrat was the county prosecuting attorney for eight years before that. His wife worked for the District of Columbia government for nearly three decades before running for a seat on the council.

Johnson courted controversy in 2005 when he flew business class to Senegal to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for homes built by a local developer.

The cost of his travel was $6,003, charged to the county, and paid for by taxpayers.

Johnson was quoted as saying: 'I always fly business class or first class. I think the people of Prince George's County expect me to. I don't think they expect me to be riding in a seat with four across and I'm in the middle.'
He was also criticised for staying at the luxurious Bellagio Hotel and The Wynn when traveling to Las Vegas for recent shopping center conventions, two of the most expensive hotels in the city.

I'm to believe that a black person flushed money down a toilet? I know the negroes and flushing money down a toilet is not something many would do. Waste it on expensive sneakers while their children starve and eat un-iodized salt, sure. But the toilet....Nope.
