U.S. officials at the Pentagon and State Department denied Friday knowing of any efforts to take down the WikiLeaks website or asking companies to do so.

The site's efforts to publish 250,000 diplomatic cables has been hampered by denial-of-service attacks, ejection from its server host and cancellation of its name by its American domain name provider. Each time WikiLeaks has worked out other arrangements to bring the site back online.

In written answers to readers' questions posted on the website of the British newspaper The Guardian, WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange alleged "abusive elements of the United States government" were behind the site's technical problems.

A State Department spokesman disputed that the U.S. government was involved.

"I am not aware of any conversations by the United States government with either any internet host here or any government over there at this point," said spokesman P.J. Crowley.

A Defense Department official also denied causing the technical problems slowing the WikiLeaks release of secret U.S. government documents.

Note careful wording of that last bit.

Hey, I believe them...I trust my government; don't you?

Why do they even bother denying it? Do they think someone will believe them? Who's been doing it then? Elves?

Keep the Shiny side up

Actually, I'd suspect the Russians, since Wikileaks has said they'll be releasing Russian stuff soon, and the Russians have a history of hacking, service denial attacks, etc.

Or a bank. I mean, you don't have to be a nation to make a cyber attack. Assange isn't a nation. I'd imagine his enemy list is growing a little difficult to manage.

Hello,

And radioactive milkshakes.

Everybody has a reason to take this man offline, and I think everybody who can get it done is trying hard. Including us.

Interesting tweets on Wikileaks:

Quote:

“All the censoring of WikiLeaks is more alarming than the actual content of the leaks. It only further justifies WL’s actions.”

“It's not wrong to lie, cheat, steal, corrupt, and torture. It's wrong to let people know about it.”

“We elect Governments, not to dictate our freedoms, but to support our liberty. They serve us, we do not serve them.”

Agreed.

CTS,

yes, the story of crushing wikileaks is more worrisome than the actual leaks.

Not everybody.

As Gandalf said, there are other powers in the world besides the will of evil.

Although the will of evil's fumbling around crashed the shit out of the Comcast DNS server, not that many noticed given how shitty their service is to begin with...

You're right about that. The most boring of all files, probably.

Anyone else see the irony in Wikileaks not telling who they employ or how they go about getting their stuff? Or that when asked by CNN about his Sweden *thing* he refuses to answer and walks out?
It's dead obvious why, but isn't that the same thing? To do his job he requires secrecy... ?

He's a spy

Does anything about that suggest anything?

This is obvious information point two:

1) He's not on our side (or anyones)
2) He's a spy

I think as a rogue agent he's an asset, and yeah, it's ironic, but it needs to be this way. Any opposition requires secrecy. So does tyranny. But in a wikileaks world, if wikileaks had too much power someone would wikileak them on some rival wikileaks

He's probably a former ISA asset, who decided to go freelance and hold a grudge besides - a lot of em did that, and some of the other released files no one else is paying attention to do seem to point in that direction since it's likely he had those all along and just sat on them a while.

Oh, and BTW - You *do* know TWA 800 was a tragic accident, right ?
Nothin nefarious about it other than some brass covering ass, in the end.
