The censored version is moronic.

Just like Wulfie's deluded notion that Libruls are the only ones who attempt censorship.

But hey, what more can you expect from the village idiot?

Yeah,

I bet all the liberals who post on this board are going to be fuming over this racist librarian who thinks its okay for children to be exposed to so-called literature with such distasteful touches of reality captured in it....

or not...

the people who want an edited copy of mark twain are certainly among the pc police, but nothing about censoring literature is liberal. Not that I get to be the authority on what liberal is, but go ahead, ask Sygm, or Niki, or Storymark(oops already replied) or Rue if she's ever still around, or Mike, or any of the other lighter posters like myself whether we think such a thing is right, and see how far that gets you towards your thesis

CANTON, Mich. (WXYZ) - As part of her sentence on a child abuse charge, a former teacher must write a letter of apology to the little girl she was accused of punching.

Jane Barnes-Renas was also sentenced to a year of probation. She must also pay a $500 fine, $500 in court costs and $130 in restitution.

As part of today's sentencing hearing the mother of the girl read a written victim impact statement from her daughter. In the letter to the court the eight-year-old girl asked the judge to punch the teacher

Charges were brought against Barnes-Renas in September after allegations came to light that she had hit the child in May after the girl did not stand up fast enough for the Pledge of Allegiance. The girl suffered a deep tissue bruise in the incident.

Barnes-Renas resigned from her position at Walker Winter Elementary School in the Wayne-Westland school district shortly after she refused to cooperate with an internal investigation into the incident.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I can understand WHY the guy is trying to do this, but really, it's the wrong idea. Replacing the work "nigger" in the book, over 200 times, with the word "slave" pretty widely misses the mark of what Twain intended.

It's funny because back in the day, that book was censored because Twain committed the blasphemy of depicting a "nigger" as an actual, living, feeling human being, who had his good qualities and looked after Huck as best he could.

And it was intended as a representation of HOW people thought and spoke at the time, but also an indictment of the racism that Twain saw all around him.

To censor the book in such a way is to prove that we've missed the point entirely. Teach the book, and the WHY of it; don't cover it up.

Here's Twain's take on it, in his own words, on the same subject:

Quote:

But the truth is, that when a Library expels a book of mine and leaves an unexpurgated Bible lying around where unprotected youth and age can get hold of it, the deep unconscious irony of it delights me and doesn't anger me.

- Letter to Mrs. F. G. Whitmore, 7 February 1907

Well as is entirely obvious (Canton is just northwest of here) I have an interest in the case since I will *always* support those who defy that fascist bit of hypocritical mccarthyist tripe...

I told the judge he should let the kid hit her, hell, if she wanted, *I* would hit her!

His honor politely declined my suggestion, which I felt was a damn shame cause I have seldom seen such an unrepentant bitch as that lady, and I can assure you her "apology" is gonna be damn snarky and insulting too - imma content myself with makin sure she never holds a teaching job again, if I can, cause THAT one shouldn't be around children, not when she earnestly believes her actions were entirely correct, oh hell no.

Yeah, I caught that, and the whole thing is sickening. The word NEEDS to be there; Twain's entire motivation for it being there was to show its use NEGATIVELY!

Republicans are frequently screaming about Democrats "PC" and censorship...well, they don't censor things, no sirree:
Quote:

The Republicans in Wisconsin have there panties in a wad over a literature textbook used in the eighth grade in some schools. It turns out that the text has an essay by (at the time of writing) a member of the US Senate, Barack Obama. The text in question is the McDoougal Littel Literature book, apparently the 2008 edition. Now, as I remember it takes around two years or more to get a textbook published. The book publisher obviously “knew” that Obama was running for President, some day.
There is a 15 page essay by Obama in the book (counting the pictures), obviously intended to indoctrinate students. This guy joins the rest of the book banners by suggesting on the Fox segment that the school districts literally cut those pages out of every copy of the text.

In May, 1989, Republicans, led by conservative Jesse Helms, the elderly Inquisitional senator from North Carolina, denounced on the Senate floor any grant of an NEA federal subsidy that was not censored according to a "national arts policy" against elitist blasphemy, sex, and violence.

This is an open forum, however, where all Americans are welcome to respectfully offer their opinions, regardless of party affiliation and whether we endorse them or not.

Yet a comment about Israeli terrorism: “The Citizens of the World and especially the United States will never be secure as long as the United States Government keeps financing, arming, and protecting the terrorists, that call themselves Israel, from prosecution for their crimes against the Middle East Gentiles” and the statement that Israel should “move back to the 1948 United Nations Boundaries allotted to them” was “removed almost faster than a cat can wink its eye” and efforts to repost it were in vain.

No censorship on an “open forum” where “all Americans offer their opinions”.
Quote:

Florida Republicans have potentially handicapped the economic stimulus of their program with a heavy dose of conservative censorship:
Quote:

Movies and TV shows with gay characters could be ineligible for a "family-friendly" tax credit in Florida under a little-noticed provision tucked into a $75 million incentive package that Republican House leaders hope will attract film and entertainment jobs to the state.

The bill would prohibit productions with "nontraditional family values" from receiving a so-called family-friendly tax credit. But it doesn't define what "nontraditional family values" are, something the bill's sponsor had a hard time doing, too.

"Think of it as like Mayberry," state Rep. Stephen Precourt, R-Orlando, said, referring to The Andy Griffith Show. "That's when I grew up, the '60s. That's what life was like. I want Florida to be known for making those kinds of movies: Disney movies for kids and all that stuff. Like it used to be, you know?"

Oh, by the way, in their “historic” reading of the Constitution, did the Republicans censor any parts? They purposefully skipped sections of it, including the entire 18th amendment, and sections dealing with the taxation of slaves as 3/5ths of a person and prohibition. Censorship by Republicans? Nah, never happens...

Yes: "What Story said". Where did you get the idea it was "libs", "progs", "dems" or anyone ELSE who wanted it removed? I'd like to know; but I suspect you read the story and your brain said "ah, damned libs/progs/dems", immediately assuming, since it was something with which you disagree, that it MUST be them.

Here's the story:
Quote:

A publisher in Alabama has caused controversy by cutting the word "nigger" from a new edition of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

The word nigger appears more than 200 times in the original Hucklebury Finn alone, but the new edition from NewSouth Books replaces the word with "slave" throughout.

NewSouth has been bombarded with emails and phone calls questioning the value of sanitising a classic work of 19th century literature for the sake of modern sensibilities.

But spokeswoman Suzanne La Rosa says the censorship allows the book to be read in schools, where it was becoming shunned.

"We were persuaded by Dr Alan Griven, who is a Twain scholar, that increasingly there was pre-emptive censorship on the part of teachers who were increasingly uncomfortable teaching the text for reasons of the racial slurs," she said.

"It occurred to him that an edition in which substitute words were added in would be agreeable to these people who were struggling to get these books read.

"It's not even on the curriculum lists, where it had been king for many many years."

Ms La Rosa says she understands the argument that the novel is social history as well as literature, but says censored text is not meant to replace the original.

"There are literally scores of editions of these Twain books out there on the marketplace for people who really place adherence to Twain's original text on the top of their priority lists," she said.

"We simply felt that there was room in the marketplace for a book that was a gentler read.

"This is hardly going to make a difference, really a ripple, even, in terms of what is available."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/06/3107338.htm

Now, find me where the editor, publisher, publishing company OR teacher are "liberals" or any of those other things you want to blame this on.

Let's see,
Quote:

Gayle Wald, an author and professor of English and African-American courses at George Washington University [so he's an "elitist"--university professers all are, right?--and teaches Black studie, so he MUST be a Democrat], told The Daily Caller that the alterations could do a disservice to readers.

“I have to agree with those who object to changing Twain’s text — not because of some ideal of purity, but precisely because Twain’s language forces us to confront the impurity of one the most beloved books in the American canon,” Wald told TheDC. ”Twain’s America was also a deeply racialized one, and ‘Huckleberry Finn,’ notwithstanding its celebration of the pleasures of boyhood, forces us to grapple honestly with that.”

Kim Moreland, English professor and author[English professor AND author--must truly be an elitist progressive] of “The Medieval Impulse in American Literature,” which has a chapter on Mark Twain, told TheDC that censorship gives too much power to what is censored.

“I respect Gribben’s motivations, I cited him in my book, but I think he’s wrongheaded. I understand Gribben’s concerns about alienating children with use of the language, and so I would have no problem as long as the new edition of the book is labeled as the children’s edition,” Moreland told TheDC.

Moreland said a more constructive way of dealing with the slur, at least in terms of teaching the text to young students, would be to emulate the school districts that have created specific teaching units to enable teachers to better deal with the complicated issues in the novel.

“I can imagine a young inexperienced teacher not knowing quite how to approach ‘Huckleberry Finn,’ and you have to have the courage to dive in,” Moreland said.

Margaret Soltan, another English professor at George Washington University[professor; well, that's a dead giveaway she's an elitist progressive, obviously], expressed opposition to the removal of the racial slur in Twain’s book.

“Well-meaning professors who think they’re protecting young people from mean words by taking those words out of literature are in fact exposing these people to far more danger than hurt feelings,” Soltan told TheDC.

Soltan used her professional and religious stances to explain why the derogatory term replacements would actually be detrimental to readers.

“I’m a Jew and an English professor.[Oh, gawd, and a JEW; she MUST be a liberal!] If I were so hurt and offended by every use of the word ‘kike’ and similar slurs in a work of art that I refused to engage with the work, I’d not only be unemployed; I’d be an idiot,” Soltan told TheDC. “You cannot grasp Huck’s ethical transformations in Twain’s story without first grasping the truth of his attitudes as they express themselves in his speech.”

Soltan told TheDC that it’s probably a good thing if readers are offended by the term in Twain’s text because then they will have a strong understanding of the slur’s offensive implications.

“If his speech upsets you, that’s arguably all the better, since your response dramatizes the violence of the word, and the harsh reality of the attitudes it conveys,” Soltan said.

Censorship happens when extremists want to try and control information. It's been perpetrated by both the left and right winged. Some of the biggest book burnings have been from the right...nazis, Christian fundamentalists, et al.

some banned books

1984. By George Orwell. Challenged in Jackson County, Florida, in 1981 because it contained “pro-communist” material. (Did I read the same book?)

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. By Lewis Carroll. Banned in China in 1931 for portraying animals and humans on the same level and letting animals "use human language."

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. By Anne Frank. Four members of the Alabama State Textbook Committee called for the rejection of this book in 1983 because it was a "real downer." Incidentally, during the same meeting the committee also called for the rejection of

A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen because it propagated "feminist views."

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. By Roald Dahl. This book was placed in a locked reference collection at the Boulder Colorado Public Library in 1988 because a librarian thought it espoused a poor philosophy of life.

A Light in the Attic. By Shel Silverstein. Challenged at Cunningham Elementary School in Beloit, Wisconsin, in 1985 because the book "encouraged children to break dishes so they won’t have to dry them." The book was later challenged at Big Bend Elementary School library in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, because some of Silverstein’s poems "glorified Satan, suicide and cannibalism, and also encouraged children to be disobedient."

Fahrenheit 451. By Ray Bradbury. For a short time in 1992, students at the Venado Middle School in Irvine, California, received copies of Fahrenheit 451 with scores of words — mostly "hells" and "damns" — blacked out. The bowdlerization of this particular novel is ironic, of course, precisely because the book itself is about censorship.

The Lorax. By Dr. Seuss. Challenged in the Laytonville California Unified School District in 1989 because it "criminalized the foresting industry."

Twelfth Night. By William Shakespeare. Removed from a Merrimack, New Hampshire, high school English class in 1996 because of a policy that banned instruction which has "the effect of encouraging or supporting homosexuality as a positive lifestyle alternative."

Welcome to the Monkey House. By Kurt Vonnegut Jr. A teacher was dismissed for assigning this collection of short stories to her eleventh grade English class because the book promoted, among other things, "the killing off of elderly people.”

And finally …

Where’s Waldo? By Martin Handford. Removed from the Springs Public School library in East Hampton, New York, in 1993 because of a tiny drawing of a woman lying on the beach wearing a bikini bottom but no top.

Thanx for specifics, Magons, as well as the reminder that it's EXTREMISTS who censor or want to censor things, not the exclusive purvey of right or left.

It's no surprise this was put up with the title it was, given the source. Anything that might not fit his ideology is immediately attributed to the left; this thread illustrates that he doesn't even THINK it might be both sides, he just sees it, says "ah-HAH!" and posts it, sadly.

I agree, extremism is the root of censorship. Sometimes they think they are protecting us by having us bury our heads in the sand, but all that ensures is that we won't know how to deal with the issues when we do come across them. If you come across something that doesn't make sense, you have to explore it, talk about it more.

That didn't take long, I didn't even accuse the left of anything. Let me put it another way. Nazis were extremist socialists who were basically facists. Their government controlled damn near everything right? The American right advocates for less government, or at least claims to. More government is the opposite of less government so comparing the right to dictoators, socialists, etc... seems pretty stupid to me. I'm just pointing out the the 'right' and the Nazis don't have much in common, certainly no more than the 'left' and Nazis do.

I'm not going to waste space on religious comparisons, I don't think religion should be brought into politics and believe Jesus himself advocated for a sepetation of church and state (give caeser what is caeser's and god what's gods). I'm glad we can all agree that censorship is stupid, at least in this instance.

Nazis were extremist socialists who were basically facists.

No, Nazis were extreme fascists who CALLED THEMSELVES socialists. Kinda like the Bush administration, who CALLED THEMSELVES "conservatives", but who had all the hallmarks of a full-on fascist regime.

Their government controlled damn near everything right? The American right advocates for less government, or at least claims to.

The operative words in that statement being "or at least CLAIMS TO" (emphasis added by me). Remember, this is also the same American right which defended, endorsed and practiced extraordinary rendition, warrantless searches, "sneak-n-peek" warrants, the Patriot Act, torture, political assassination, etc. And the same "American right" which stood steadfastly behind a Republican President when he insisted on expanding the government, expanding the military, exploding the debt and the deficit, all the while claiming that "deficits don't matter". So please don't try to pretend that (a) you don't remember those days, or (b) WE don't remember them either.

More government is the opposite of less government so comparing the right to dictoators, socialists, etc... seems pretty stupid to me. I'm just pointing out the the 'right' and the Nazis don't have much in common, certainly no more than the 'left' and Nazis do.

Actually, the comparisons make an amazing amount of sense. Not seeing the similarities between the actions of the right when they are in power and the actions of the Nazis when they were in power... seems pretty stupid to me.

Oooohhh you that I was calling the left stupid. I wasn't, only the comparison of the 'right' with the Nazis, which still disagree with. I guess comparing the entire right to Nazis turns out about as rational as comparing all socialists to 'em.

Or about as rational as calling all Democrats socialists... ;)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Funny, you have time to post yet another rant, but not enough time to discuss?

It's a circle, not a line.

Grossly oversimplified and missing a few bits, but in a general sense, you get the picture ?

Super extreme Right and super extreme Left actually do connect to a point where they become indistinguishable from each other, but that State above All bullshit hearkens back to that moron Plato anyways, damn apologist git.

But that's a line that also runs through anarchism. So if one were "super extreme left" *enough* - and not inclined towards fascism, their "circular line" would logically bend towards anarchism, yes?

At least, if I understand your leanings at all, that seems to be more or less the direction your circle leans, I think. As does my own, to probably a somewhat lesser degree.

Heck, it hearkens back to his teacher with the Philosopher Kings idea. The belief that an elite class must exist that knows what's best for the commoners.

I like to project my political alignment chart in 4 dimensions. Not because I have to, mind.

Kwicko: That would be why.

No shit.

So, explain why you and your crew want to remove it?

Why do you and yours want to whitewash history?

I know why, but I KNOW you have no clue.

Hello,

What an interesting propaganda and indoctrination video about the process of indoctrination and propaganda. You can hate yourself and the enemy at the same time.

Well, in practice the shape of the diagram would be something closer to a Klein Bottle, but really, do YOU wanna try to explain Euclid to sound-byte politicals ?

Hell, I'd pay to see you try!
