Truthout Exclusive: An Interview With Former Guantanamo Detainee David Hicks

David Hicks was one of the first "war on terror" detainees to be sent to Guantanamo the day the prison facility opened on January 11, 2002. He is one of the small group of detainees who challenged the President George W. Bush's November 13, 2001 executive order authorizing indefinite detention, which led to a landmark 2004 Supreme Court case, Rasul v. Bush, in which the High-Court said detainees have the right to habeas corpus. Hicks spent five-and-a-half years at Guantanamo and was tortured. Last October, he published a memoir, "Guantanamo: My Journey." This is his first interview since his release from Guantanamo in 2007.

Wow. Reading through Hicks personal history, he sounds like some washout from an Australian version of the Phoenix program and a would-be Ted Kaczinsky.

But the report he brought back from treatment at Guantanamo and the kangaroo courts and mock trials are even more disturbing. Even people who are the most lost have their roles to play.

Most of the Gitmo Gang were just in the right place at the wrong time.

One day before 9/11 Afghanistan was Our Friend...Bush Jr's signed attack order before 9/11 notwithstanding.

So far as these farmboys knew, they were doing exactly what CIA wanted. Taliban was destroying the poppy farms, just like USA wanted...

Hell, Taliban was vacationing at the Bush ranch signing oil deals.

But yeah, Gitmo is a lab for MKULTRA.
