The Los Angeles Times reports that the University of Southern California hospital transplanted a kidney into the wrong patient last month but that the patient escaped harm because the organ was a close match.

The USC hospital said in a statement that it had shut the kidney-transplant unit pending an internal investigation of the Jan. 29 "process error," and might re-open it today.

State public health officials are investigating.

The Times says the hospital did not detail the nature of the error and would not answer questions. A spokesperson said no patients were harmed.

An official with the program that coordinates transplants in the Los Angeles area said the hospital notified it of the mistake and said the unidentified patient escaped harm because the kidney was a "close-enough match."
