Seriously, boats are kinda awesome. I think I'll get one someday and fill it with booze and pretty women.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Boats are awesome. Never been in a boat with any kind of motor, but love canoes, kayaks, catamarans, sailboats, sailboards, windsurfers, basically anything wind- or human-powered.

Never been in a boat with a motor, but have been in a few airplanes without motors!

I should learn how to sail, one day when I have the time and money for a boat. I'll have to remember that when I hit my mid-life crisis in 20 years or so. Maybe I'll have the cash by then and there will also be more firefly.

DREAMTROVE

I've been learning how to sail. The guys on the sailing forums are just as vicious to each other as RWED ;)

I think water is a good start. A hull. Possibly pontoons, if it's a cat or tri, but its hard to make a ship that way, you'd have to custom build it.

My last thread on the topic got little notice, some cool videos

All I ask is a tall ship and... oh, screw it, that's all I ask, I can use GPS if need be :)

I love the calm before the storm type scene. Jack and Elizabeth marooned on the island is beautiful. The edit, alas, removes the serious side of Captain Jack Sparrow's dark past in favor of the more cartoonish look that they opt for in PotC 2 and 3.

Can someone find me this clip ? I've looked. The unedited version is my favorite scene in the movie. It's up there with the ghostship scene.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Madame Geezer and I were in St. Maarten last month on a cruise, and went out with this outfit that bought up several 12 meter America's Cup boats of the '80s, and lets you sail them (with their skipper and just under main and jib.) in a short race.

It was kinda fun and not too serious, with crew assignments such as 'bartender' and 'ballast' for those who wanted to go but couldn't grind a winch. We were in Canada II against Stars & Stripes and True North. Did the timed running start and everything.

Canada II

Then the wind got up a bit and we were running with the lee rail buried and things got to be much more fun. The boats were really cooking and folk got serious about winning. We crossed the line 15 seconds up on Stars & Stripes.

So now I need to look for sailing classes around NOVA 'cause Madame has got the bug. I could probably stand it myself.

DREAMTROVE

I caught it last fall. I have a friend who's a shipwright, and come spring, which always comes very late around here, I'm hoping to get back in, and start planning something.

Anyway, first time out I capsized, then I sunk, and then my boat fell to pieces. It was great. I was amazed by how fast it went, and how easy it was to steer. On both points, far more so I thought than a motorboat.

Then I started thinking: It really is go where you want, when you want, with no requirements, no costs, it's exactly what Jack Sparrow says it is.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Eeeeh, boats.

Yanno, I can't swim - I mean, I know HOW, but between the lack of bouyancy and the weight of the alterations and prosthetics, I sink like a bloody rock...
I need an extra life preserver AND a set of water wings, if you want me to get on a boat.

There was some discussion about a modified prosthetic for such activities, with a motorized propeller instead of a foot, that woulda been fun, but we never could find a way make it light enough to be feasible.

plastics. That's what my sister uses. But frankly, she does much better with no assistance. I have a friend with no arms and one leg who also does quite well. It's a matter of being in touch with your inner fish.

I also have the sinking problem, but I've been swimming all my life, so I've learn to space out the inevitable bobs.

RIONAEIRE

Beir bua agus beannacht

Water is my element, I love being in the water, near the water, on the water in a boat etc. But I love being in the water the best, but preferrably natural water, lakes, rivers, streams, the ocean. Swimming pools are much less gratifying but they'll do in a pinch. If I can't be in the water than being on it in a boat is the next best thing. I hope that is all coming along DreamTrove.

Plastics, yeeaaah, right - you DO know part of the reason my mad-docs allow me to test their high grade prosthetics is because I tend to destroy the damn things, right ?

The current one is a polymer sleeve backed up by carbon fibre with a layer of some kinda ballistic stuff in there, teflon or kevlar or something, cause otherwise when I get on a rampage the socket will split - not to mention the titanium shaft, which'd get bent all out of shape, and lets not talk about how many foot attachments I've wrecked, or even in one case, torn completely off!

Unfortunately, durability comes at a weight cost, I'm afraid.
