In the most recent threads section of the home page here, I noticed something odd.

Of the items visible in the window, only about 30 were actually FF/Serenity and or fandom related. The rest was.. well a lot of it looked suspiciously like unrelated rants at best.

Are there any browncoats left here to actually celebrate and discuss the joy which is Firefly?
I remember not too long ago when there would have been at least 90% on-topic posting.

Anybody else out there noticing what I'm seeing or is it just me?

We're still here.

You gotta remember, the show was 9 years ago. We've run out Firefly things to talk about, yanno? I don't think there is anything to say about Firefly that we haven't already said in the last 9 years, repeatedly.

So we celebrate Firefly by hanging out here with other Browncoats, but talking about other things we have in common. Or not.

Please note that there are different boards here on FFF. You posted here on Real World Event Discussion, which is dedicated to all topics NOT-Firefly.

Firefly-related posts would be found mostly on the General Discussions board.

Only so many things to discuss about 14 episodes and a movie, nearly a decade later.

And comics and short stories!

Those are often good for about a week of debate and speculation.

But the actual Firefly discussion actually tends to happen with e-mails among groups of fan writers. Occasionally the conversation will leak out for discussion on the board.

There's a number of people who I still talk to about Firefly two to three times a day with.

I honestly don't see much difference in thread topic ratio between now and a year or two ago. Actually, if anything, I'd say there's been more talk about Firefly lately than there was a year ago, with Nathan's growing popularity and such. Real World has been the dominant board on this site for a long time, it seems, and the various projects our BDHs have been doing ebb and flow quite a bit. Occasionally people talk about Whedon's other projects, too, but until Avengers there isn't much to currently talk about. I'd like to see more discussion in that sort of vein, but... I guess we'll see if that ever happens again.

Yes, but everyone, these are the newbies who are coming in from SyFy, and they're not used to FFF.

So, Newbie. This is RWED. It's where all the trolls go to feed ;)

Firefly topics are more apt to fly in other sections.

Hah, no, we aren't related, nor are we the same person. If I understand it right, she grows garlic in her garden, and uses it to cook regularly, so she chose a garlic reference as her handle. Our friends in the Bar and Grill thread generally call her Rosie and call me Rose, to keep us straight.
I met her at DragonCon 2007, have photos of her and everything
I have no sockpuppets, and if I did, I certainly wouldn't make our names almost exactly the same so everyone would jump to that conclusion. But I do remember when she joined, simply because our names are so similar. I kind of went, "Wait, I didn't post that..." and rubbed my eyes for a bit. I remember it (fairly) well.

Everyone's pretty much said it. New people still discover Firefly and still discover this place, but I imagine they spend most of their time in the FF forums, at least at first. As you said, you've had enough of politics and conspiracies, and this is the only forum (I know of) where those exist. I remember when I was a newbie (on another board), I wanted to talk about Firefly and everyone told me that, given it's been so long, most discussions were about other things, some Joss-related, etc. Over there, the equivalent of RWED was the most frequented forum, too, and I'm guessing it is on most FF sites. Just the way of the world. At least it keeps the sites alive.

I'm almost exclusively in RWED for just the reason it doesn't interest you; I find the conversations here stimulating and interesting, and very up-to-date, so I can find out a lot here (ignoring the obvious idiocy) that I either haven't heard or haven't YET heard on the news.

We're still Browncoats, or I'm guessing most of us, we just like hanging out with other Browncoats and talking about stuff--if it weren't for RWED I probably wouldn't stick around. Even I, only a couple of years since discovering FF, couldn't find much more to talk about it, especially much that hasn't already been gone over. I assume those in the FF forums take care of new people, since most of the rest of the other forums are about that. I'm quite happy here, hanging out with other Browncoats; when something pops up FF-related, I often go to the FF forums to mention it--only to find it's already been talked about!

eeek, I remember that too (for me). It was before the BDM came out. Everyone had already seen it at advance screenings and had discussed it to death, and I was still wanting to talk about it. Very frustrating.

I wish the top 100 wouldn't include RWED or (probably more fair) would indicate at each topic where it had originally been classified.

Bun - about fireflies (real ones)... We had them twice last year. I mean, we had them A LOT, but we had 'em in the spring, and then again in the fall. I don't recall ever seeing that happen before (rare enough to get fireflies in Texas at all, it seems like; nothing like the summers we used to have in Nebraska, where they'd be everywhere!).

Anyhoo, I haven't seen any this year, yet, but will keep an eye out for 'em. I rarely turn on the outside lights, so they're more than welcome in my area. :)

I second it Niki, I've never seen real ones either, they don't live in OR. When my Rachie moved to IL she told me about the fireflies, said they were beautiful, I envy her for that, but not for the flat country and lack of ocean. I miss her a lot, closest thing to a sister I ever had or ever will, she's too busy to talk to me anymore but she knows that I'm right here whenever she's ready, I'll always be right here.

I really really wish we had fireflies here.

When I was a little brat in Central PA the FFs seemed to be the reason for the season. We were allowed to capture them but were required to release them before we came in to go to bed.

There weren't as many night-time lights in those days, so we could go out and lie on our backs in the yard while our parents picked out the constellations and told the stories which went along with them. There were more stars visible than most young people would believe today unless they've been outside during a major regional power failure.

Maybe one day we'll get back to that, but the 24/7 business day makes it unlikely.

I guess the moral of this post is that you should enjoy everything you have, and make good memories, 'cos you never know what's going to happen to it.

Google up "firefly range map" and you'll find more learning opportunities than you'll know what to do with, and even chances to participate in FF science.

Well, heck - it seems according to most of the maps that we're not supposed to have them at all here in central Texas. But have them we do. I'm keeping my eyes peeled, since this is the ideal time of year to be outside here anyway!

I'm spending the day hanging new screen doors front and back, since we're in the middle of those three nice days in the Spring when we can have doors and windows open without it being either too windy or too hot. Dang dogs have blasted holes through both screen doors. 100+-pound Yellow Lab on the run doesn't much feel a screen door when he hits it. I'm reinforcing these ones with heavy-gauge wire guards on both sides to preclude this kind of thing happening again. Hopefully. ;)

Though they are all masters of illusion, not one of our cats can claim the excuse of being a 100-pound lab when it comes to destruction of any sort. Mostly, in fact, they claim innocence, though the ring of feline truth is a bit hollow among piles of shredded upholstery, wire, rock, ceiling tiles...
The screen door we are currently sporting out front would give pause to many a larger critter, high on maple syrup or 'nip, and armed like Wolverine. We hope it'll last a couple of years.

I'm with the others; Bun's idea is a great one. Listening, Haken? Just 'cuz he doesn't have ENOUGH to do!!!

Your descriptions, of a lab going through a screen door and the "innocent" act of cats, made me giggle and sounded SO familiar. Our screen door is a total mess; got tired of dogs pushing it open (we've not had any of the size and "labness" of yours) and cut a dog flap out of it, and now it's hanging half-assedly...hell, it's old, I shouldn't complain, but have to do something before "fly and mozzie season" sets in!

As to where fireflies should and shouldn't be, those things are changing. Man's interference has changed the location and migratory patterns of many species, and it will no doubt continue to do so.

Oh, heck, the lab isn't even mine. He's my boss's dog. He stays with us when she's out of town, and she was gone for ten days this time. I had him written into the lease, and Jeepie (my Malinois) just loves him, as do we, so we're very glad to have him come visit. Bubba doesn't really like cats, but he's coming around to mine, just because they don't know that they're supposed to be afraid of him, and they've never swatted at or scratched him. It's gotten to where all four of them will sleep on the bed together - two dogs and two cats - with no drama. At least, no drama until WE decide to go to bed, at which point we have to kick them all off. Or try to. :)

This last stay, one of my cats, Rodger, froze and rolled over when Bubba came into the room, instead of hiding or running off (Bubba usually chases them, but not really viciously or anything). He was on his back, showing Bubba his belly, which was funny enough already, but then Bubba stuck his nose into Rodger's belly and blew his lips out - FLUHFLUHFLUHFLUHFLUH - which made Rodger's eyes get REALLY big, but nobody panicked, and all went well. A couple days later, they did the same thing again.

When Bubba went home Friday, the cats walked through the whole house most of the evening, crying and looking for him. I think they like the big lunk.

If you've ever seen "Marley & Me", Bubba pretty much *IS* Marley. He's a big galoot, but utterly harmless and sweet as can be. Jeepie's a bit standoffish about most dogs, but she and Bubs just get along great, because neither of them really get in the other's business. It's done wonders for her as far as helping socialize with others, and she even checks out other dogs at the park as long as her Bubba's there to "protect" her. It's weird - most dogs aren't aware of their size, but Jeepie most assuredly knows EXACTLY how big she is. With dogs smaller than her, she can be a bit pissy, showing teeth and snapping at them a bit; but with dogs BIGGER than her, she is VERY mild and meek, as if she knows she'd best not press her luck! Bubba doesn't really care one way or the other, but she seems to feel protected when he's there, so she gets a lot friendlier towards other dogs.

The cat thing totally cracked me up...oh how I wish you had a video of it! Choey's lab/bloodhound, Kiowa, adores to stick her head about half deep in water and then blow bubbles...don't ask me why, she's not too bright, but it's always a kick to see. But THAT? Yeah, Jeepie's gorgeous - the only thing about her that *isn't* up to the standard for the breed is that her ears don't stand up like they're supposed to (so they say). Hers flop down a bit. But they're her best feature, and one of my favorite things about her, because you can read her entire mood by the position of her ears, from alert to scared to sheepish to confused to happy, it's all in her ears.

It's been a long process to get her to be okay around other dogs (and people have been even harder, because she'll never fully trust a human, including me; some abuses just never can be forgotten, it seems, and someone really did a number on her). Jeepie's now part of a "pack" at work - there are three dogs she interacts with at work every day, and three more that she sees (and even PLAYS WITH!) on our daily walks. She's seven years old now, and she's FINALLY getting to act like a puppy with some of the other dogs. It's a thing of joy to watch her at play with a pair of dachshund puppies and a black lab pup, as she chases and herds them, and they turn around and chase her in return. I never thought I'd live to see the day when she'd be okay with other dogs, but she's doing amazingly well now. She's getting better around people, but it's still a crapshoot. She seems to dislike blonde women more than anyone else, which breaks my boss's heart, because she's a blonde. Jeepie barks at her when she comes in, but goes right up to her husband when he comes by!

There are days I wish I knew what was going on in that head of hers, and other times when I can tell EXACTLY what she's thinking just by watching her ears. She's a sweetie, but few other people will ever see that, since she keeps it hidden so well.

This is a couple years old - her at work, being concerned about what's going on in the shop.

I lived in the deep country of VT for a year, and I remember one particular June night. There was a heavy thunderstorm hanging behind the hills, but it never broke. Meantime, the fireflies went nuts. I grew up in the midwest with these guys around every summer, and I thought I knew how they acted, but I've never seen anything like this. The hill (pseudo-mountain) behind my house was covered in fireflies, swarming and flashing in short, quick bursts. It was insane.

The next night, very few were left. It was like they had a big mating orgy because of the storm and that was it for the season. I wish I'd taken a video of it.

Pay no attention to the man in the photo - he doesn't really like having his picture taken. Should've worn his "Stig" helmet that day... ;)
