Executed while handcuffed...

Commanders in Afghanistan are bracing themselves for possible riots and public fury triggered by the publication of "trophy" photographs of US soldiers posing with the dead bodies of defenceless Afghan civilians they killed.

Senior officials at Nato's International Security Assistance Force in Kabul have compared the pictures published by the German news weekly Der Spiegel to the images of US soldiers abusing prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq which sparked waves of anti-US protests around the world.

They fear that the pictures could be even more damaging as they show the aftermath of the deliberate murders of Afghan civilians by a rogue US Stryker tank unit that operated in the southern province of Kandahar last year.

Some of the activities of the self-styled "kill team" are already public, with 12 men currently on trial in Seattle for their role in the killing of three civilians.

Five of the soldiers are on trial for pre-meditated murder, after they staged killings to make it look like they were defending themselves from Taliban attacks.

Other charges include the mutilation of corpses, the possession of images of human casualties and drug abuse.

All of the soldiers have denied the charges. They face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.

The case has already created shock around the world, particularly with the revelations that the men cut "trophies" from the bodies of the people they killed.

An investigation by Der Spiegel has unearthed approximately 4,000 photos and videos taken by the men.

The magazine, which is planning to publish only three images, said that in addition to the crimes the men were on trial for there are "also entire collections of pictures of other victims that some of the defendants were keeping".

The US military has strived to keep the pictures out of the public domain fearing it could inflame feelings at a time when anti-Americanism in Afghanistan is already running high.

In a statement, the army said it apologised for the distress caused by photographs "depicting actions repugnant to us as human beings and contrary to the standards and values of the United States".

The lengthy Spiegel article that accompanies the photographs contains new details about the sadistic behaviour of the men.

In one incident in May last year, the article says, during a patrol, the team apprehended a mullah who was standing by the road and took him into a ditch where they made him kneel down.

The group's leader, Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs, then allegedly threw a grenade at the man while an order was given for him to be shot.

Afterwards, Gibbs is described cutting off one of the man's little fingers and removing a tooth.

The patrol team later claimed to their superiors that the mullah had tried to threaten them with a grenade and that they had no choice but to shoot.

On Sunday night many organisations employing foreign staff, including the United Nations, ordered their staff into a "lockdown", banning all movements around Kabul and requiring people to remain in their compounds.

In addition to the threat from the publication of the photographs, security has been heightened amid fears the Taliban may try to attack Persian new year celebrations.

There could also be attacks because Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, is due to make a speech declaring which areas of the country should be transferred from international to Afghan control in the coming months.

One security manager for the US company DynCorp sent an email to clients warning that publication of the photos was likely "to incite the local population" as the "severity of the incidents to be revealed are graphic and extreme".

I note for the record that the pictures show soldiers and dead folks. It does not mean the people were murdered, that they were killed by US action, or that they were innocent. Without that context the pictures are what they are...soldiers and dead people...nothing more.

I heard about this and was thoroughly disgusted and angry. Yes, in every war there are those gung ho enough to take pride ( ) in their slaughter. It's one of the things I hate most about the military; their mindset. Those doing it don't belong in the Army; glee at any person's death is unconscionable.

Doesn't matter how they died or who they were. Things like this are just plain WRONG and those who participate should be held accountable! I think whoever's in charge should be checked out, too; usually mentality starts from those higher up.

The only thing that matters in this is how they died and who they were.

For example, suppose they were incompentent bad guys who accidently blew themselves up. Or were bad guys killed while attacking US or US allies. Or suppose they had just finished torturing a woman for learning to read. Or suppose they were innocent people killed by American soldiers out of control. Your analysis equates the killing of innocent people by out of control US soldiers with the killing of bad guys who deserved a good killing by someone other then the US.

Context is everything and while a picture may be worth a thousand words, it still may not tell the whole story.

These soldiers are part of a group of 12 soldiers (called "the kill team") who are being prosecuted for going on a murder spree killing civilian Afghans and taking trophy body parts and trophy pictures. Basically, they are being accused of being a gang of serial killers. Der Spiegel published only 3 out of 4000 photos they obtained.

It's not just "nothing more." This is evidence. Just follow the original links and read the articles.

Remember, if you can show a pattern of such behavior among a group of soldiers, that's just "a few bad apples", and shouldn't be held against the entire military. Likewise, Enron and the behavior of BP were just "bad apples", and shouldn't be held against corporations.

However, show ONE welfare cheat or ONE overpaid public-sector worker, and that's proof that you have to completely get rid of those systems. Ditto NPR, even if you have to fake the footage to make the fundraiser look bad!

Hey Moron...READ THE NEWS ARTICLES!

The soldiers in the photos ARE NOW ON TRIAL IN USA FOR MURDERING THE DEAD PEOPLE IN THE PHOTOS. THE SOLDIERS ARE FACING THE DEATH PENALTY.

The 4,000 photos are exhibits in that murder case, thus are part of the public record. But "National Security" is trying to censor the other 3,997 photos. Where's Wikileaks when you need it?

I only hope these troops have a more competent prosecutor than you.

The soldiers in that Abu Ghraib death photo have already been sent to prison by a court of martial law.

The first two pictures of the dead guy with his pants off, you'll notice he has marks on his wrists consistent with handcuffs, so he was a prisoner at least shortly before he was shot. Which suggests his shooting had nothing to do with the pants off part of it (say, if they were stopping a rape).

Humiliation is the most likely, assuming the pants were taken off before he was killed. But if the pants were taken off after, that means they got a trophy. You can guess what it probably was.

It's also entirely possible that both happened.

In any case, regardless of what the people killed were doing before, humiliating and shooting disarmed and restrained prisoners (even if not outright defined as prisoners of war) is against the Third Geneva Convention.

While vigilante justice to confirmed and non-confirmed terrorists may appeal to some, there are methods in place for processing suspected dangerous individuals. Who'da thought I'd end up arguing the lawful alignment side?

Irregardless of whether those killed were guilty or innocent of anything, the truth is that glorying in someone else's death and posing with their bodies as a "prize" is the perfect example of what's wrong with armies...the dehumanizatio of the enemy.

WHATEVER those dead people did, they were human beings, had families, friends, people who cared about them. They loved, knew hunger, fear; all the things we've all experienced. To use them as "props" represents the sick attitude wars foster, and anyone who can't see that and thinks posing like that is a good thing, because the dead were on "the other side", is blind, deaf and dumb to reality. For such people, if they saw photographs of jihadists posing with dead American bodies, they would be horrified and furious, because that's one of "the good guys". Doesn't work that way in reality, and that attitude is sick, in my opinion.

There is also the facts that have come out about those people which show all too clearly what their mentality was and that they somehow thought doing what they did was "cool". One of the sickest aspects of military mentality. It saddens me greatly that so many are unable to see the difference between what some of our people have done (in EVERY war) and what the "other side" has done. To do what these people did is to say quite clearly that some of our soldiers are no better than the bad things we so easily think and say about the other side.

As to O'Keefe, he's an asshole who's found a way to get attention and nobody seems to be willing to stand up and denounce him when he does something that makes "the other side" look bad. They love it as it reinforces their already-held beliefs, so they don't look beyond the surface. Of course it was faked; the simple fact that he and his cronies PRETENDED to be what they were not is fake...everything from then on is devalued, and the tape having been cut and edited casts further doubt on its veracity. How do we know there weren't sections with the NPR guy decrying what O'Keefe's buddies said which nobody got to see? How do we know that the NPR guy didn't say some very valid things (aside from the fact that I think there was validity in a lot of what he DID say, just nobody seems willing to stand up and say it in public).

Given it's been proven conclusively that O'Keefe was NOT wearing the "pimp" clothes he professed to have been wearing in that other stunt kills his credibility completely. He's only believed by those who already WANT to believe what he professes to have "proven".

Still think they'd hesitate to fire on us, if ordered ?

I call it military CULT-ure, for damn good reason, remember, once upon a time I was one of these bloodthirsty fuckers, something which was at the time being heavily encouraged from on-high and such viciousness was downright treasured.

I doubt that has ever changed, and I was far, far from alone in that respect - these guys are fucking pikers compared to the COIN teams, which is just our latest fig leaf over what amounts to Phoenix.

Go look into what Phoenix *did*, you'll see.

I think its nasty to take pictures with dead bodies, whether they killed them or not, ew. If they killed the civilians for fun then it was wrong. I guess I don't get it, why kill civilians for fun? If you're in the military and fighting a war you'll kill enough people just doing your job that I wouldn't figure you'd need to kill more. If your body is hardwired wrong and killing is fun to you, why can't you just enjoy doing the killing that is part of the job description and not do extra?

Corporal Jeremy Morlock sentenced to 24 years in military prison, pled guilty to "Kill Squad"
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/i-lost-my-moral-compass-h
ow-a-young-us-soldier-triggered-an-abuse-scandal-in-afghanistan-2252475.html

Quote:

The relatively light sentence followed a plea bargain that will soon see Morlock give evidence against four comrades who are also accused of taking part in the murders. In exchange for evidence about how the group "waxed" victims (an expression used in his interviews with prosecutors) he should be eligible for parole some time around his 30th birthday.

Jeremy Morlock's story certainly gives pause for thought. Born in Wasilla, Alaska. As a teenager, he played ice hockey with his friend Track Palin, in a team managed by Palin's mother, the state's now-famous former Governor, Sarah Palin.

Morlock soon began smoking locally cultivated marijuana several times a week. He was also being prescribed ten different medications (including painkillers, anti-depressants, and sleeping pills) by military doctors. An army medical evaluation later found that he had post-concussive syndrome, dependence on cannabis, had abused opiates and sedatives, and was suffering from personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. But he was not removed from the front line.

Morlock told prosecutors that he and his colleagues began randomly killing unarmed Afghans shortly after Christmas 2009, allegedly at the behest of their sergeant, Calvin Gibbs, who was said to be in the habit of keeping the fingers of victims as souvenirs and to have claimed to have carried out similar murders during a tour of Iraq. "If Gibbs knew that I was sitting in front of this camera right now there's no doubt in my mind that he'd fucking take me out," he told investigators, in an interview uploaded to YouTube.

is mother has spent $50,000 helping to fight his case. She was not at home when The Independent called yesterday, but told her local paper, The Mat Su Valley Frontiersman, that her son's prosecution represented an effort to paper over a widespread problem.

"I believe he was taking orders from somebody else," she said. "I believe there are higher up people involved, and these guys are the scapegoats for the whole thing... It's not only his unit [involved in criminal activity], there's all kinds of stuff going on over there... No one will ever understand what happens in a war zone unless you're there."
