Shock As Merkel's Party Loses Her Home State

The German Chancellor's political party has lost control of a key state in an embarrassing electoral reverse that signals widespread discontent with her leadership.

The Conservatives lost control of Baden-Wuerttemberg for the first time in almost 60 years, ceding it to the Green Party in a local election.

It is the first time the Greens have won a state premiership, and they hailed it as a momentous result.

"This is a historic turning point in Greens history," said party co-leader Claudia Roth at celebrations in Berlin.

It is believed Japan's nuclear disaster in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami helped increase support for Germany's anti-nuclear Greens.

Chancellor Angela Merkel last year ignored popular opposition and extended the life of 17 of the country's nuclear plants by an average of 12 years.

The disaster prompted Mrs Merkel to freeze the plans and order the temporary closure of the country's oldest plants, which reportedly disoriented some of her own supporters and raised questions over her credibility.

"I still think the moratorium was right, but we didn't succeed in this short time in making clear that we meant it seriously and where we want to go," said Volker Bouffier, governor of Hesse state and a member of Mrs Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats.

Mr Bouffier acknowledged that it was extremely painful to lose Baden-Wuerttemberg, which the party had led since 1953.

But he stressed that there was no appetite to punish the Chancellor.

"Angela Merkel leads this party and she will in future too."
Founded 31 years ago on an anti-war and anti-nuclear platform, the Greens, until now, have been better known in opposition.

Sky News' Edmund Caldecott says the defeats will wound the Chancellor.

"Her grip on the upper house has weakened, and such a dramatic defeat in Conservative heartland could be contagious," he said.

I hope they enjoy their rolling blackouts once the nuke plants are shut down.
