New Jersey spent more than $3 million this fiscal year on clothing allowances for white-collar workers who aren't required to wear uniforms, according to a new report from the state comptroller.

Under collective bargaining agreements, New Jersey provides an annual clothing allowance for uniforms to certain employees of $700 a year for full-time workers and $350 for part-time workers. The allowance is a flat amount included in payroll checks and doesn't require that employees provide a receipt.

Overall, the state spends more than $22 million a year on clothing allowances, with more than 20 percent going to white-collar workers, such as day care counselors, computer technicians and teaching assistants. About half of them don't wear uniforms, the report said.

"It's absurd," said state comptroller Matthew Boxer. "The state spends millions of dollars every year to cover the cost of uniforms for state employees who don't actually wear uniforms."

Hey, if an employer demands you dress upscale, they can DAMN well pay for the threads - no matter who they are.

I got into a verbal spat with a security company once when their goddamn rep snarled at me for not having a decent haircut or wearing a suit to the interview - cause where the HELL was I gonna get either when my address of record was a fucking park bench at the time ?

So there's a point to that - demanding "professional dress" damn well ought to mean paying for it, especially if the shit job doesn't pay enough over base (your intended employees life-overhead, mortgage, student loan, car payment, bills) to cover wardrobe as well.

I'm with Frem. These guys demand a level of dress, even if they have no uniform or dress code, it's expected.

The costs associated with employment are what drive us into debt. I used to have a job that was a 45 hour commute to do code that I could have done at home, connecting to the server remotely, they would have been able to log my time and progress, and they did it for another worker, because his commute was just over an hour which was the breakoff. But 1.5 hours per day, the miles, the wear and tear. This costs money. Or I could move closer, and that would cost money. Collectively, I was making no money I think out of $30k, I cleared $2k a year.

Jobs make expectations, they should pay for them.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Okay, I can understand paying to begin with, for when you first start the job, but after? Why do people care so much about what one wears anyways? They could just have some basic requirements, like a certain amount of modesty and cleanliness, other than that why do people care? Also I can see having a rule about shirts with slogans at work. I've gotten away with my "I can kill you with my brain" shirt at NAMI, but I don't want to push it, so I've only worn it there a couple of times. And I never wear it to the day centers I help at, don't want my folk to be bothered. Though I doubt they would be, but its the principle of the thing, so I don't wear it on Mon. or Thurs.

Corporations care how they look, to other corporations, customers and workers. Why cathedrals and priest robes? it's the same thing. The audience needs to be impressed, and the main target audience is the faithful, in this case, the workers.

If there's no steel and glass tower with a 20 foot ceiling and shiny floor, and everyone is just sitting around in jeans in a basement, pretty soon people realize that they're doing nothing important and clearing 7 grand a year, and they walk.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.
