Like I've said, anything that can severely burn you or melt off your face without you feeling it is dark and dangerous and we shouldn't mess with it anymore, not dark as in evil incarnate, but dark as in dangerous and twisted. I feel really bad for those hunters, but there is a part of me that wonders how they didn't figure it out? They must have fallen asleep and then woke up and been harmed.

I believe that was the case.

AFA technology in general... I think there are some technologies that don;t mesh well with typical human psychology, and nuclear energy is that way in several aspects.

Humans aren't good at "vigilance". Most of us... we're not able to "pay attention" hour after hour, day after day, waiting for the catastrophe that many never come. And yet, that is exactly how nuclear operators are supposed to work.

And even if there IS an accident... a lot of the emergency responses need to happen in SECONDS, not minutes or hours. At Three Mile Island, the computer had already done the right thing by ramming the control rods in. But humans screwed up the remainder of the response for hours, partly because of a mindset which would not allow them to recognize the loss-of-coolant accident.

Also, our imagination is limited. We just can't imagine what we haven't planned for... if we had been able to imagine it we would have planned for it. But the thought that ALL of our emergency systems and failsafes would .. er, fail... just never occurs to us.

And finally, there is the problem of our timeline. Most peoples' timelines are short... some as short as to the next meal, others to the next year. It is a rare person who acts decades into the future, or to the lifetime of their children. Nuclear waste extends into a future which no civilization has encompassed.

There is a line in Dirty Harry which goes something like A man's gotta know his limitations. It would be good if we would recognise ours.

Hey, PN, is there anything you aren't paranoid about?

Oh, no. With paranoia there is no possibility to trust anyone, anything, any concept, or even yourself, except through whatever logical rules and reasoning you've managed to wrangle yourself into accepting.

And it's also true that most cases of paranoia stem from one early and deeply significant betrayal, meaning that sometimes, the paranoia will be justified and you can never tell when it will be.

Being paranoid is being deeply insane, and being constantly aware of your own insanity at the same time.

Paranoia can in fact be a comforting state of mind - if you think they're out to get you, it means you think you matter.

Fukushima nuke bomb factory UNDERWATER DURING TSUNAMI

Almost all of the 500 workers at Fukushima nuke bomb factory were drowned during the tsunami...

Quote:

TEPCO began pumping more water into the No.1 reactor on Wednesday in order to monitor changes in the water depth in the containment vessel and check for leaks.

The test is part of a plan to fill the No.1 and No.3 reactors' containment vessels with water by July, to cool the fuel rods in a stable manner.

TEPCO says it will raise the amount of water injected from 6 to 10 tons per hour for 6 hours, and then to 14 tons per hour. The temperature and pressure in the containment vessel will be monitored for 18 hours.

TEPCO also says it will make sure that the containment vessel, with the added weight of the water inside, can withstand strong aftershocks.

The firm says robots on Tuesday detected radiation levels of up to 1,120 millisieverts per hour inside the No.1 reactor building.
It says some contaminated water may be leaking from the reactor into external pipes.

I'm so glad I get my news on Fukushima from IAEA and not PN. Unit 1 and 2 are the hot reactors. The temperatures in reactor 3 are decreasing steadily.

Actually, there is pretty solid evidence that not only did the rods fission in SFP No 4, but that the explosion in Unit 3 prolly was a combination hydrogen and nuclear explosion (prompt criticality) in SFP No 3.

The concrete debris from Unit No 3 is highly radioactive (sieverts per hour).. clearly "dusted" with nuclear fuel. And the "hot spot" in Unit No 3 thermograph is not from the reactor but from the area of the SFP. Even the trajectory of No 3 is different, as well as the explosive force. The explosion goes straight up.

I have been chuckling ever since PN posted "Oh, look at the pretty MOX missile!"

Paranoia seems to be one of the worst brain malfunctions out there, because it is scary and you can't trust. I'm fortunate in that paranoia isn't something I have to struggle with. I do however struggle every day with self mistrust, which is the other side of the coin and it is scary and unpleasant too, though it is a bit more quantifiable and not so broad and all incompassing. Someone once told me that being paranoid is the only way to truly understand all the threats out there and to avoid the paranoia is to be complacent and there for be in error. I don't believe this person, I suppose if this person wants to live that way it is their choice, but I will not subscribe to that ideology for me or mine.
