remains of a dead dolphin washed up at Fourchon Beach in Port Fourchon, Louisiana

map shows that most of the dolphins and whales were stranded on the shores closest to the Deepwater Horizon site

A year on from BP oil disaster scientists say Gulf of Mexico is almost back to pre-spill health levels...so why are a huge number of dolphins and turtles still washing up dead?

President's Commission clears BP of malicious fault in Gulf Oil disaster.

BP did not put cost before safety in drilling the Macondo well that ruptured in April, according to the presidential commission investigating the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We have not seen a single instance where a human being made a conscious decision to favour dollars to safety,” said Fred Bartlit, chief counsel of the National Oil Spill Commission, on Monday.

“The blowout was not the product of a series of aberrational decisions made by rogue industry or government officials that could not have been anticipated or expected to occur again. Rather, the root causes are systemic and, absent significant reform in both industry practices and government policies, might well recur.”

Time Man of the Year 1938

"But it remained for the Jews, with their unqualified capacity for falsehood, and their fighting comrades, the Marxists, to impute responsibility for the downfall precisely to the man who alone had shown a superhuman will and energy in his effort to prevent the catastrophe which he had foreseen and to save the nation from that hour of complete overthrow and shame. By placing responsibility for the loss of the world war on the shoulders of Ludendorff they took away the weapon of moral right from the only adversary dangerous enough to be likely to succeed in bringing the betrayers of the Fatherland to Justice. All this was inspired by the principle--which is quite true within itself--that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.

He certainly played along. It was a manufactured disaster. The site was chosen carefully, an "asphalt volcano" on a fault line. Not exactly the most stable area. An unprecedented depth with an unprecedented amount of explosives, and then skipping all safety and stabilizers, the creators were aware that they were making a disaster.

"Those [safety measures] would cost us 11 hours. I'm not happy about that." Well, everyone knows that 11 hours doesn't mean anything to a project that takes years. That's a lame excuse, the one Tony Hayward gave, that even shocked Halliburton.

The white house has plenty of oil execs and engineers on call, because of course, it's run in part by the oil industry. A similar problem that Condi had, during the disaster, her team was able to fix in hours using the same method that BP eventually used.

Everyone in the industry knew how to fix the problem in a matter of hours. They also knew how to avoid it in the first place. Not fixing it was the goal. This is the unavoidable logical conclusion by anyone of a normal human intelligence above an ape level, of about IQ 70.

Why create a crisis? Because you have a solution, of course. Radical legislation that would never pass, like legislation banning offshore drilling. Why you might want that? Lots of reasons. Kick up the price of oil. Pass new alternative energy. Clean energy. Unclean energy (fracking?) Who knows.

It's like 9/11, who did it and how is the easy part. Why is trickier, there are a lot of reasons to do it. There's no question in my mind that it was done, and it was done intentionally.

ETA: Not clear where you were coming from on this. I recall you were the first person to post the story on the BP spill. At first I thought you were just going to make political hay of it because you knew Obama would screw it up, which of course he did, but later I decided you actually cared, and that this was more of a southern pride thing. It is a beautiful coastline (well, most of it still is. Thank god for small favors like that reverse trend current that runs up the west coast of Florida.)

It was a horrible accident, I really feel bad for those down there, the people and the animals, but especially the people of course. I'm thankful that it isn't as bad as it could be, that things are improved now, but what a rutting mess. My dad tossed around the idea that Obama and his ilk did it on purpose so America would become opposed to getting oil locally so he could enforce cap and trade type rules. I don't know how true that is or isn't, just one of his ideas, though I might have gotten it mixed up, it was last year.

That's certainly possible. Cap and trade is on the agenda, that would in a way support it. It also could support drill locally, fracking; or it could be simply jacking up the price of oil. It's hard for me to say. It was done for a reason, that's my instinctive response. When people have solutions and problems they put the two together unless they have a reason not to.

Obama also did something unconscionable: He put BP in charge of the cleanup, which meant that by virtue of having a horrible oil spill, they were rewarded the US gulf coast. The justifications of "they broke it they fix it" is kindergarten logic. It would be like hiring Bin Laden construction company to rebuild the world trade center (conspiracy theories aside.) One has to assume he's smarter than that, and so he is intentionally rewarding BP.

Also, the timing of Obama's pan-mideast war, also hits all of OPEC, and sanction on Iran, Venezuela, major oil producing countries also. I think at this point it doesn't matter whether Obama has any decision making power or not, they're the policy of the administration. You could argue as I would, that they are no different from that of the previous two, at least, someone else is writing policy, but still, they have a reason for doing it.

Obama could be a Jewish Muslim. Most muslims do not accept your departure from them, so when he became one in Indonesia, he never ceased to be one, and the Jews accept converts.
