What IS it with these guys??? How much self-delusion does it take to be in the public eye--running for PRESIDENT no less, in this case--yet think you can get away with fathering a kid out of wedlock (hi, Ahnold, how's the kid?) or paying off your mistress (hey, Ensign, how 'ya doin'?) and nobody'll notice???
Quote:

John Edwards, the former US presidential candidate, is expected to be prosecuted on suspicion of using campaign funds to pay his mistress hush money to keep quiet of their affair and love-child, during his bid for the White House.

Mr Edwards, was conducting a relationship with Rielle Hunter, a woman he met in a New York bar who became his campaign videographer, while running for President in 2008. Miss Hunter, 10 years his junior, had a daughter, Frances, in February 2008, while his wife Elizabeth was suffering from breast cancer.

Mr Edwards admitted the affair in August 2008 but denied he was the father of Frances. In January 2010, he acknowledged that he was the father, having previously maintained that the father was Andrew Young, his long-time aide.

Miss Hunter was hired by Mr Edwards in 2006. His wife, who became a major figure in his subsequent campaign, vowed to stand by him, but upon learning he was the father of Miss Hunter's child, separated from him in January last year. She died of cancer in December.

The former North Carolina senator, who lived a lavish lifestyle but presented himself as a champion of the poor, has been the subject of a two-year investigation into whether he used more than $1 million in political donations to hide the affair.

United States Justice Department sources told US media that Mr Edwards is to face prosecution for campaign finance violations. He could avoid an indictment by striking a plea bargain.

Any guilty plea, however, would mean he could no longer practice as a lawyer, ending his legal as well as his political career.

Investigators believe that "hush money" for Miss Hunter and Mr Young came from two top donors, Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, the 100-year-old heiress to the Mellon fortune, and Fred Baron, Mr Edwards's campaign finance chairman, who died in 2008.

Mr Young wrote a scathing tell-all book called "The Politician" about Mr Edwards, alleging that the former senator kept him in hiding with Miss Hunter from 2007 so that his presidential campaign could continue untarnished.

The sordid case reached a low when it was revealed that there was a video of Mr Edwards and a heavily pregnant Miss Hunter having sexual intercourse. Mr Young later handed the tape over to investigators.

Mr Young claimed that Mr Edwards sought funds from Mrs Mellon and that this was paid in cheques, some of them hidden in boxes of chocolates, for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The funds were later referred to as "the Bunny money". Mrs Mellon has said the money was intended as a personal gift, not a campaign donation.

Before he died, Mr Baron said that he helped Mr Young and Miss Hunter move to California and that Mr Edwrads was not aware of this.

Rumours about the affair first surfaced during the 2008 presidential campaign and some details were published by the "National Enquirer" but they were vehemently denied by Mr Edwards, who finished third in the presidential race and endorsed Barack Obama.

It blows my mind, that these guys keep doing this stuff, it inevitably comes out, and they don't learn.

I don't recall ever hearing about an affair by any woman running for or holding office (have I missed something?), so I gotta wonder: is it only men who can't keep it in their pants and think they can get away with it?

With people like these "running" our country, who's surprised we're in the mess we're in?

Nah, of course women in power positions will have affairs, it's not just men, it's the mindset.

The reason we don't HEAR about more women caught having affairs is because there's fewer IN those power positions than the men.

Yeah, you're probably right, Byte, and I'm not sure whether that should be followed by "fortunately" or "unfortunately"! But I still believe men will always do so MORE than women, at the very least. The drive is bigger, and the truism about thinking with "something" other than your brain has gotten so many more men in trouble in EVERY walk of life than women.

As to Clinton, that's amusing. He got his dick sucked. Guys on the right came down on him like a ton of bricks, and how many have been shown since then to have been doing even MORE? Secondly, I don't think felatio (do we even know on how many occasions?) is the equivalent of having an affair for YEARS, using election funds illegally to pay someone off for it, fathering a CHILD, denying it, using someone else as a fall guy, and all the rest. A rather poor effort at "yeah, but HE...", if you ask me.

Well, you know, the Romans useta think that all women were lustful, to the point they couldn't control their appetites and even that the woman was always responsible for her own rape, because the assumption was she always WANTED it.

The idea that men are more lustful than women or that they can't control themselves actually is a fairly recent idea.

Both are probably wrong: men and women probably have about equal libido. It depends on the reproductive strategy they're using, but those strategies have their pros and cons for both genders, it's not just men getting an advantage for spreading the seed and women getting an advantage for being selective. Men can also get an advantage for being selective and engaged in child rearing, and women can get an advantage from sleeping around too (this switched version is what we see in the Bonobo, and probably has some influence on human behaviour as well).

Ultimately, what we're seeing with these power driven types isn't average human behaviour, but the outliers.

What kills me is that I STILL see Kerry / Edwards bumper stickers on some cars around here.

Unbelievable.

Granted it's the outliers (who've been caught anyway), but I'll stand by my opinion nonetheless. After 62 years of watching the world go by, it's the conclusion I've come to, and not by choice. I'd also say we have enough women in power nowadays that SOME scandals should have come out by now, if it were true.

What the "Romans" BELIEVED wasn't how they BEHAVED. By "Romans", are you including Roman women? I seem to recall Romans in power having raped, traded wives and engaged in other excesses to a pretty huge extent, not at all to the same degree as women. Do you really want to compare the excesses of those in power by men and women throughout history? I think you'd have a bit of difficulty "proving" women behaved as badly sexually as MUCH as men, by a very large margin, if you look at all of history.

And the drives ARE very, very different, physiologically. Look at how common it is for teenage boys to masturbate a LOT every day v. teenage girls; look at how many married men have pornography (almost all) versus how many married women. My husband went on a med which lessened his sexual drive greatly; the first thing he said to me was how astonished he was, not thinking about sex all the time, and how much of a relief it was, and it's not just him, I've heard it elsewhere too. Of course, after two weeks he discontinued the med for the same REASON, but... There's also viagra; look at how many men take it who don't even NEED it; how much less popular it is than those "sexual enhancement" things you see advertised for women. There's an awful lot of proof out there that men are more prone to make decisions based on sexuality than women.

Niki, you missed my point. My point was that cultural perceptions about lust and lack of control are generally incorrect.

Culture, culture, culture. What else do you expect from a culture that places excessive emphasis on masculinity and sexual conquest? It's much, much better than it used to be, but still, not everywhere in the world is like this, you know.

I disagree it's all about culture, Byte, I think you're ignoring a whoooole lotta stuff. We'll have to agree to disagree on that point.

Just for the fun of it, here are seventeen recent sex scandals:

1998: Clinton (D) --we all know the story.

1998: Rep. Rob Livingston (R), who admitted days before the Impeachment vote on Clinton that he’d cheated on his wife. He resigned from Congress, saying “I must set an example I hope Clinton will follow”. Political expediency aside, I give him points for owning up to it and for quitting.

2004: Gov. James McGreevey (D) revealed he was gay and had an affair with another man. He resigned. Supposition is he came out because a staffer was preparing a sexual harassment suit against him.

2006: Mark Foley (R) resigned after he was accused of sending sexually explicit messages and e-mails to Congressional pages. He later went into rehab for alcoholism.

2007: LA Mayor Villaraigosa (D) acknowledged having an affair with a local television reporter. He stayed on the job after an announcement of contrition.

2007: David Vitter (R) apologized “for a very serious sin in my past” after his phone number showed up in the records of the D.C. Madam. He went on to be elected to the Senate.

2007: Senator Larry Craig (R) agreed to step down temporarily from several committees after details came out about his arrest in a Minneapolis airport. He denied any wrongdoing and said his plea was a “poor decision”.

2007: John Edwards (D) – we know it all.

2008: Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (D) apologized to his wife and the city after romantic messages showed him having an affair with his chief of staff. The chief of staff resigned; he refused to. But he did, after a 2008 case involving felony obstruction of justice stemming from his efforts to cover up the affair was followed by him now serving for up to 5 years for probation violation.

2008: Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) resigned after allegations that he met with a prostitute who was part of an international prostitution ring. Federal prosecutors chose not to pursue the matter, and he’s now on CNN.

2009: Sen. John Ensign (R) admitted having an affair with a campaign aide and wife of his former chief of staff. In 2011, the Ethics Committee has referred the case to the Justice Department for possible prosecution of his lobbying and payoff activities surrounding the affair.

2009: Gov. Mark Sanford (R) admitted he had an affair with a woman in Argentina. He chose to serve out the remainder of his term, which ended in January 2011.

2011: Rep. Christopher Lee (R) resigned after having posted shirtless photos of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist. He said he had made a “profound mistake”.

2011: Prime Minister Berlusconi faced charges that he had sex with an underage prostitute. He laughed off the charges of sex and abuse of power.

2011: Gov. Schwarzeneger (R) –- no more needs saying.

2011: IMF Chief Strauss-Kahn –- it’s in the news.

Gee, and not a woman among them! Who’d-a thunk it?

What I find amusing is that, while there are Republicans and Democrats (with slightly more Republicans in THIS list), it's the Republicans who constantly and loudly lay claim to the better "family values". It's also amusing to me that the Democrat accused of being gay admitted it, the Republican vigorously denies it to this day, and that a California Democrat got in trouble for having an affair with a TV reporter. All of that is just sooo predictable!

Of course it's culture. Look up any remotely gender equal culture in the past and consider the historical records on how they treated women and women sexuality. If there's no stigma, women sexuality is a lot more open and frequent.

I recommend starting with the Celts and Gauls (same tribe actually, but you know). There's also a number of Native American tribes that fit the bill.

In our culture, there's very little stigma on male sexuality (men CAN get a reputation from women if they sleep around, but that's about it). There is a stigma on female sexuality, but not so much that women don't have affairs. I stand by my supposition that the issue is more women just haven't been CAUGHT.

While I agree on some of those points, certainly about Western society, I maintain that PHYSICALLY, men are more driven sexually than women, and can be and have been more susceptible to being manipulated by sex. You'd have to show specific facts to refute that, whatever culture has to do with it. Otherwise, I agree to disagree and let that be my final word on the matter.

That's offensive to men.

Bah. Fine. I don't want to have to dig up evidence. Most of the evidence available in American psych studies are tainted by the culture issue anyway. One of the many reasons I hate psychology.

Good, he should get in trouble for spending campaign money on that.

I think women have plenty of affairs too, they are just more discrete about it. A lot of times people give men excuses, "He can't help himself", "Boys will be boys". Sure men may tend to need more sex from a physical standpoint, what with the semen getting built up in there and all, but I don't see men as weak bafoons who can't control themselves, they have freewill just as much as women do, they just have different challenges than women in certain areas. Let me tell ya women can be very sexual creatures too and I don't hold men to a different standard morally than I do women. If a female candidate used money to hush up a side boyfriend of hers I'd be just as opposed to it, no more, no less.

Exactly. Everyone has to take responsibility for themselves. Once you start justifying anything as "nature," of a gender, race, religion, or even humans in general, you're on dangerous ground.

Men being unable to help themselves around women has been used to excuse rape for years, and only started to change in the 20th century. I'm NOT about to let anyone co-opt the same lame excuse for any other unethical or unfaithful activity. Feminists or self-depreciating men alike.
