MAGONSDAUGHTER

One of the biggest stories over here during the last couple of weeks has been the temporary ban on live animals to indonesia for slaughter, following horrific footage being circulated on how these animals were treated while they were being killed. Thank god I am already vegetarian, but I think it has converted quite a number recently.

So now the controvery has spread to local practices. The Australian meat industry requires stunning of animals before slaughter, but there are exceptions for kosher and halal meat, which says that stunning is contrary to the practice. In both practices, the animals throats are cut and they need to bleed to death (I think)

What say you all? Should religious practices get exceptions? Is it up to whoever kills the animals to do it any way they want? What part do animals have in people's personal freedom to choose?

HARDWARE

In US slaughterhouses they typically use a bolt gun to instantly kill the animal. Although there are religious slaughterhouses as well. Taste-wise an animal that has suffered or expires slowly has a completely different taste than one that is instantly killed. The hormones released during a slow death completely change the texture of what might otherwise be a delicious meat into what might as well be dog meat.

In general I don't believe in a religious killing. I won't eat kosher or halal meats. The question isn't whether or not they can feel pain. The question is whether or not they can suffer.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics - RAH

The ban is only temporary? What a shame. I agree with both of you. Our eating habits here in America at least are terribly environmentally and financially wrong, illogical and horrible, you'll get no argument from me on that point. I don't see it changing any time soon, unfortunately.

I eat some hamburger but no other form of red meat, and I am careful not to think how it "got there". Mostly I eat chicken, and only that because our local farms are mostly "free range" (which is more expensive for beef than for chicken) and they don't commit some of the awful things other farms do. Even then I'd give up both, except I hate vegetables (except artichokes, which I could LIVE on!) so much, tofu didn't do it for me, and I'm too weak-willed to pursue the issue and find a way to become a sserious vegetarian. But I eat both of those only in small quantities, DO live on artichokes when they're in season, and am more a fruit lover in general. Is there such a thing as a "fruititarian"? If so, I'm one!

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I've found that, the healthier I get, my craving for red meat is almost non existent. Or it could be a getting older thing. Still not going to pass up a tasty steak, should anyone offer it to me. But to be honest, I can't remember the last time I had any.
