"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Apparently there ARE consequences for hacking into someone else's account.

Of note, Murdoch has hired Viet Dinh, former Bush Justice Department official and one of the chief authors and architects of the Patriot Act, to help in his "investigation".

That should go well.

And I'm sure that it's a complete coincidence that FauxNews's Twitter feed was "hacked" (allegedly) around the same time this pattern of abuse was being unearthed.

This is stuff that Murdoch's businesses have been doing since at least 2005, and establishes a clear pattern of illegal behavior which likely continues even today.

There are records indicating that company officials knowingly paid out over a million pounds to try to keep details covered up, and this behavior likely includes even Murdoch's son, as well as numerous other newspapers and media outlets in his empire.

So we have a documented pattern of such hi-jinks by this company and its managers, we have a history of cover-ups of this stuff, we have the Patriot Act guy involved. It has the feel of being more than just a little non-story hack job.

Maybe Murdoch WANTS more controls placed on media, thinking that he's going to be in control of those with the control. If so, he's probably not far wrong; one of the BBC newscasters yesterday said it's unusual that PM David Cameron was speaking out against NewsCorps this way, since he takes his orders from them. It sounded more serious than jokey when they said it, too.

Murdoch is a truly vile individual and his media empire is responsible for so much wrong on so many levels. I for one will be very pleased if his house of cards tumbles down.

This is more than Murdoch losing money, this is about his reputation going down the drain. People have been fed up with his vicious tabloids (along with a whole lot of other stuff) for years. Now they are finally seeing the depth to which this gutter journalism sinks. And if you've chosen to work for News of the World, frankly I'm out of sympathy already.

Murdoch has virtually chosen the political leaders in the UK and Australia over the past 20 years, probably major influence in the US as well.

James Murdoch faces jail

Media scion James Murdoch has joined the list of those facing possible jail over the News of the World phone hacking scandal that has seen the 168-year-old newspaper killed off overnight, UK media have reported.

Former British home secretary Alan Johnson has suggested to the BBC Murdoch's statement announcing the paper's closure contained an admission that could expose him to prosecution.

Murdoch, News International's chairman, is quoted in a press release admitting he personally - and wrongly - approved out-of-court settlements to phone-hacking victims.

Mr Johnson said that may have put him in breach of Britain's Regulation and Investigatory Powers Act, The Guardian has reported. The act states:

"Where an offence under any provision of this Act (...) is committed by a body corporate and is proved to have been committed with the consent or connivance of, or to be attributable to any neglect on the part of a director, manager, secretary or other similar officer of the body he (as well as the body corporate) shall be guilty of that offence and liable to be proceeded against and punished accordingly."

However, the paper has quoted an unnamed criminal lawyer as saying Murdoch was not at risk because the payment of compensation to victims was allowable under the law.

"You would have to show that he had knowledge at the time rather than after the fact," the source said.

Private investigator Glenn Mulcaire and News of the World's former royal editor Clive Goodman were jailed in January 2007 over the affair, with speculation police are poised to arrest the newspaper's former editor Andy Coulson. Pressure is also mounting for former editor-turned News International CEO Rebekah Brooks to be sacked.

In an astonishing response to a scandal engulfing his media empire, Rupert Murdoch shut down the News of the World, Britain's biggest-selling Sunday newspaper.

As allegations multiplied that its journalists hacked the voicemails of thousands of people, from child murder victims to the families of Britain's war dead, the tabloid haemorrhaged advertising, alienated millions of readers and posed a growing threat to Murdoch's hopes of buying broadcaster BSkyB.

Yet no one, least of all the paper's 200 staff, was prepared for the drama of a single sentence that will surely go down as one of the most startling turns in the 80-year-old Australian-born press baron's long and controversial career.

"News International today announces that this Sunday, 10 July 2011, will be the last issue of the News of the World," read the preamble to a statement from James Murdoch, who chairs the British newspaper arm of News Corp .

Staff gasped and some sobbed as they were told of the planned closure of the 168-year-old title, the profits of whose final edition will go to charity.

"No one had any inkling at all that this was going to happen," said Jules Stenson, features editor of News of the World, outside the News International offices.

It seemed a bold gamble, sacrificing a historic title that is suffering from the long-term decline of print newspapers to stave off a threat to plans to expand in television: "Talk about a nuclear option," said a "gobsmacked" Steven Barnett, professor of communications at Westminster University.

But some analysts predicted Murdoch would make The Sun, the tabloid daily that is Britain's best-selling newspaper, a seven-day operation and that the demise of the News of the World would ultimately benefit News International's bottom line.

Nevertheless, Murdoch still faces pressure to remove his close confidante and top British newspaper executive Rebekah Brooks, a friend of Prime Minister David Cameron. Her editorship of the News of the World a decade ago is at the heart of some of the gravest accusations.

The scandal has tarnished Cameron, who picked as his communications director a former News of the World editor who resigned over the hacking affair. The Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday that the journalist, Andy Coulson, would be arrested on Friday. Police declined to comment.

Inhuman

Praising a fine muck-raking tradition at the paper, which his father bought in 1969, James Murdoch wrote in a statement to stunned staff that the explosion of a long-running scandal over phone hacking by journalists had made the paper unviable.

"The good things the News of the World does ... have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company. The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself."

It was unclear whether the company would produce a replacement title for the lucrative Sunday market, in which, despite difficult times for newspaper circulations, the News of the World is still selling 2.6 million copies a week.

One option, analysts said, might be for its daily sister paper the Sun to extend its coverage to a seventh day - an option that some commentators said was already in train.

The website www.sunonsunday.co.uk was registered on Tuesday this week but the party who registered it opted to keep their identity secret.

Television takeover

Stephen Adams, a fund manager at Aegon asset management, which is one of the biggest shareholders in BSkyB, told Reuters he saw News Corp's move as "something to restore or remedy a tarnished reputation for the News Corp group.

"But we also critically see it as a reflection of News Corp's desire to progress the BSkyB bid and have full ownership of the company."

Cameron's right of centre government had already given an informal blessing to the takeover, despite criticism on the left that it gave Murdoch too much media power.

The storm of outrage at the News of the World turned attention on Cameron's own links to the paper and to other News Corp executives, including Brooks, a regular guest of the Camerons.

Growing popular and political anger over the phone hacking saga had fostered concerns among investors that there could be snags in securing final approval for the $14-billion bid.

Seething anger

Journalists said that an emotional editor Colin Myler had read out the announcement at the east London newsroom where Murdoch changed the face of British journalism in the 1980s by breaking the power of the printing unions.

"People are just in a complete state of shock," said one journalist who asked not to be named.

Asked how staff felt towards Brooks, the reporter said there was a sense of "seething anger" and "pure hatred" directed towards her: "We think they're closing down a whole newspaper just to protect one woman's job.

Opposition leader Ed Miliband said Brooks should go, echoing the view of the journalists' trade union. The union said some sub-editors at The Sun had walked out in support of their colleagues on Thursday evening.

However, James Murdoch made clear Brooks remained in place as chief executive, telling Sky News he was satisfied Brooks knew nothing of the crimes allegedly committed when she was editor.

One employee of the doomed paper told Reuters: "We didn't expect it at all. We had no indication. The last week has been tough. None of us have done anything wrong. We thought we were going to weather the storm."

One source at News International said the decision had been taken and acted upon with little delay.

War dead

Investigations into phone hacking at the News of the World have been bubbling for several years and until recently only celebrities and other well-known figures were believed to have been victims.

But the scandal exploded earlier this week after revelations an investigator working for the paper may have listened to -- and deleted -- the voicemail messages of a missing 13-year-old schoolgirl, later found murdered.

The scandal deepened with claims News of the World hacked the phones of relatives of British soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Britain's military veterans' association broke off a joint lobbying campaign with the paper and said it might join major brands in pulling its advertising.

Many of the paper's readers are ardent supporters of the armed forces so suggestions it may have hacked the phones of the families of grieving service personnel only further alienated a core readership already horrified by suggestions its reporters accessed the voicemails of missing children and bombing victims.

Shortly before the announcement the paper would be closing for good, advertising website Brand Republic said the paper had lost all advertising for this weekend's edition.

News Corp wants to buy out the 61 percent of BSkyB it does not already own. The government has said the News of the World case should not affect that. But US shares in News Corp fell over 5 percent on Wednesday, though they recovered somewhat in a stronger general market on Thursday.

Formal approval for the deal had been expected within weeks after the government gave its blessing in principle. But it now seems unlikely for months, although officials denied suggestions that they were delaying a decision because of the scandal.

Former News editor arrested
London
July 8, 2011 - 8:41PM

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been arrested for questioning after Scotland Yard concerns over phone hacking allegations and payments to police officers, Sky News reports.

The tabloid boss, 43, who has more recently worked as press chief for British Prime Minister David Cameron until his resignation in January, is believed to have attended a central London police station on Friday morning where he was officially taken into custody.

Coulson was at the helm of the top-selling News International publication between 2003 and 2007 during which time the Sunday paper has been linked to a phone hacking scandal involving up to 4,000 people.
Advertisement: Story continues below

"The MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) has this morning arrested a member of the public in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking," Scotland Yard said in a statement distributed on Friday.

Coulson was not named by police, but Sky News said he was the 43-year-old mentioned.

"The man, aged 43 years, was arrested by appointment at a south London police station. He is currently in custody," the statement continued.

Coulson was employed by Cameron as director of communications in 2007 following the former's resignation as editor at the News of the World.

In a press conference on Friday, Cameron said at the time he appointed Coulson, the former tabloid chief gave assurances he was not linked to alleged wrongdoing at the top-selling Sunday newspaper.

However the prime minister went on to say that the allegations ultimately led to Coulson's departure from his office.

"I decided to give him a second chance and no one has ever raised serious concerns about how he did his job for me," Cameron said. "But the second chance didn't work out and he had to resign all over again."

Coulson, with whom Cameron admitted he became friends, is expected to be released on bail after questioning.

I agree, this won't touch Murdoch financially. I also doubt it will do all they're saying/writing to his "reputation". Does he have one? I mean a good one? Aside from the righties who swallow his people's bile whole cloth, most people seem to abhor him.

Murdoch Jr. going to jail? Now THAT might have an impact, if it actually happens, which I kinda doubt, given the clout Daddy wields. Not sure even the judicial system is free from his interference. We'll see, but I'd LOVE that. Word is Daddy, being 80, is thinking of stepping down and passing the empire down to Jr. If he's in jail ( ), that would be difficult. Daddy would probably have to go on working into his eighties. Awwwww. The fact that he brought Jr. over to New York before all this broke was assumed to be a move to try and keep him out of the fray; I'm tickled it didn't work!

Okay, Mike, NOW I see gain for Murdoch to have faked the hacking. Seems pretty silly, but maybe to make it look like they're victims, too, or something? Dunno, but the timing makes it questionable.

Geezer, I'm afraid my sympathy for the people at NOW is limited. They've been doing sleaze for a looong time now; they knew what they were doing. I do sympathize to a point, but only to a point.

Wow, Magons, sounds like he's even more reviled Down Under than he is here! Unfortuantely, we're populated with far too many ignorant righties who live and breathe whatever he and his news empire say, so he's got pretty strong clout over here, too. I guess it's not surprising perhaps...given he's an Ozzie himself, you guys probably knew what a bastard he was long before we did, eh?

The one that shocks me the most is
Quote:

My gawd, it is just impossible to sink ANY lower! If it's true, I don't know why someone isn't already charged; that's worse than anything we've experienced over here!

Tho' I do have to point out that, while I don't know how it is there, Britain apparently takes its tabloids more seriously than we do, and they're more sleazy than ours (if that's possible!). Over here they are jokes to many people (not enough, unfortunately), and from what I hear, not NEARLY as awful as in Britain.

Uh, I also read that he may have wanted to dump NOW for a while now anyway and this was just the perfect excuse. "the demise of the News of the World would ultimately benefit News International's bottom line." Who knows?

Gawd, I would just adore it, even if it only meant Murdoch's power and control of the media were lessened in any way. He's the scariest person on earth, to me, given how MUCH control he has over global media, his obvious ideology and his willingness to use his power and money to influence counries' governments! Anything that minimizes that influence in any way would be a blessing. That it will actually bring him down? Nah, not a chance.

Hey, where are Rappy and his buddies, rushing in to defend Murdoch and claiming the whole thing is a vast liberal conspiracy? They're awfully quiet...

He truly is a kingmaker, Niki, particularly in the UK and here. His papers and his media empire form, not reflect public opinion and his editorials (not written by him personally) win or lose elections. He wields far, far too much power.

The only reason we don't have all our media owned by him is there is still some sorry arse mechanisms in place to prevent total monopolies. So much for laissez faire policies, if there were no regulations he'd own the lot, that includes America as well.

When I checked Fox this morning, it wasn't anywhere to be found on their front page online. Last I looked, it still isn't.

Others had it pretty prominently displayed on their main pages at the time.

I can understand the reasoning behind not wanting to talk about something which is such an embarrassment, and trying to "bury" it in your coverage. After all, when GE was the parent company of MSNBC, they were never allowed to cover issues like the unwanted "extra engine" for the Joint Strike Fighter.

Oh. Except they covered those stories prominently in their primetime shows, for days on end, all while pointing out that while they were against these wastes of taxpayer money, they were also working for a network owned by the manufacturer of these engines, but that still didn't make them want them.

How biased of them. ;)

Ah, so now folks begin to understand why I find Murdoch so despicable - ironic in that he learned these tactics from Hearst, who was also a complete sleaze...

This is also why Murdoch hates the internet, the edge common people have now that they didn't back in the days of Hearsts empire, the ability to side-step the propaganda and find their own information - I'm not sure most folk can even conceive the level of hatred folks like that have for even the notion of information outside their control, which is why they're desperate to back any legislation which hinders that, no matter what.

One good thing I hope comes out of this is an awareness of just how easy it is to hack into peoples phones - and that this encourages manufacturers to offer some defenses... which will no doubt come with a lot of screaming from the alphabet boys cause that'd hinder spyin on people. *hisssss*
Which is kinda funny, cause I've ALREADY seen some howling about Blackberry that way.

Of course, just like with Blizzard, Square-Enix, and Playstation Network, those goddamn CALEA mandated backdoors (which, mind you, it is a felony crime to subvert, and often they're hardwired) will kinda defeat the purpose for anyone with actual skill - but still, it'd keep the script kiddies out.

Wow. Jump to conclusions much?

I believe that as of my last post Fox had published 32 articles relating to "News of the World" in the previous week. About the same as other news outlets.

No more. No less.

Sounds like you spend a lot of time at Fox News.

You noted that you checked Fox News "this morning" and then later. Apparently you checked it earlier to come up with your "not much on Faux" conclusion. I've checked it once, to get the 32 articles figure on "news of the world" articles. Other than that, I dont check Fox News. I'd say, based on those facts, that it's a foregone conclusion that you check Fox News more than I do.

Don’t fire at the [Mossad or Brits dressed as Arabs] "Taliban" bombers...

What bosses told hero as he saw [false flag] "terrorists" plant IED that killed him

The Sun
July 8, 2011

THE widow of a hero soldier blown up in Afghanistan hit out yesterday at military chiefs who ban troops from shooting Taliban they spot planting mines.

Angry Wendy Rayner, 40, told an inquest that Sergeant Peter Rayner watched helplessly as insurgents laid killer devices unchallenged.

She said her husband, 34, told senior officers of the danger but his warnings were "laughed off".

Four days later the dad of one was killed when one of the mines went off as his patrol escorted a bomb disposal team.

Wendy called on the Government to change rules of engagement which she says force our soldiers to treat the Taliban with kid gloves by not shooting first.

She said: "They are not allowed to fire on these terrorists, who are allowed to get away with murder.

"Let our soldiers be soldiers. We have lost too many men out there."

She went on: "Peter was concerned about the number of explosive devices being planted in the area they were patrolling and had told higher ranks because he feared one of them would be killed.

"He said they could see people planting these devices but could do nothing about it. They could not open fire or make contact with them.
"They laughed it off and said, 'You will do as you are told'.

"I believe that if people had taken on board what Peter was saying, if he had been shown more respect as a sergeant, he might be alive."

Mrs Rayner spoke out before a coroner recorded an unlawful killing verdict on her husband, a soldier since he was 17.

She said Peter, of 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, phoned her shortly before he was killed and was "highly stressed" as he told of his concerns. He had watched Taliban bomb layers at work through night-vision glasses in Nahr-e-Saraj, Helmand, last October.

He then suffered fatal head injuries in a blast as he led ten men in single file down a track.

After the Bradford inquest, Wendy added: "The patrol area was filled with IEDS (mines).

"They had already had a couple killed.

"But the lads are not allowed to fire unless they are fired upon themselves. The Taliban can shoot first but our lads can't. I am really annoyed. Peter was just trying to protect his men but got himself killed."

Wendy, of Bradford, and Peter had been married 12 years. They have a son Derek, eight.

After his death Peter's CO called him "a lion".
His father Pete, 60, himself a soldier for 23 years, was at the inquest with Peter's mum Bernadette.

He said: "I don't believe my son was taken seriously because he was an NCO, not an officer."

An MoD spokesman said: "IEDs are taken very seriously. But troops are required to exercise restraint as the use of deadly force is not always appropriate.

"Innocent civilians may be in the vicinity."

Is Gaddafi a Rothschild?

Qaddafi the Jew, the Rothschilds & the Mossad. During a discussion on Israel Radio they just dropped this little tidbit. There is a Jew left in Libya. His name is Muammar Gadhafi. Of his early life little is known, and even less is certain. He was born, it is said, in Sirte, a desert town, the son of a goatherd. Other versions suggest that his real father may have been French, and his mother Jewish. Colonel Gaddafi’s close ties to the Rothschild family and the Mossad make complete sense when we consider the fact that he is a Jew, the son of a Jewish mother, according to a report aired on Israeli television. How much oil money has the brutal Libyan dictator secretly stashed away in Israeli banks? When an Arab journalist told me that Muammar Gaddafi was Jewish and that his mother’s relative lived in Israel and had been on Israeli television, I thought it must be some kind of joke. But it’s not. Here is the Israeli program in which his second cousin and another relative explain that the “Madman of Libya” is actually a Jew. According to the relatives’ testimony on this show, there is no question that Gaddafi is a Jew under Jewish – and Israeli law. Gaddafi’s Jewish blood explains his very close connection to the Rothschilds and their preferred intelligence agency – the Mossad. Now it all makes sense.

Insider reveals: 'PR men would think up a story and Rebekah's Sun and News of the World would run it, word for word. Some were complete fiction '

There was fury at News International when journalists discovered that the 200 staff of the News of the World were to be sacrificed to save the career of Chief Executive Rebekah Brooks.

Here one Murdoch insider, whose identity is known by The Mail on Sunday but who has been guaranteed anonymity, describes what it is like working for Mrs Brooks...

The integrity of The Sun and the News of the World started crumbling the moment Rebekah Brooks got her hands on them.

She had the same, craven relationship with public relations practitioners. Scores, if not hundreds, of front-page stories were written by the PR men. They would think up a headline and story and The Sun and News of the World would run it, word for word. Some of them were complete fiction.

Meanwhile, proper stories by proper journalists were buried deep inside the paper. Stories that upset one of Rebekah’s VIP cronies didn’t appear at all. It broke the reporters’ hearts.

Cameron: He may pay a heavy price for being charmed by Brooks

Relationships with PR firms such as Matthew Freud’s Freud Communications were so close that if they called the newsdesk with a story, you had to run it. If you told them it wasn’t a story but just a piece of PR fluff, they would phone Rebekah’s office, the reporter would be told off and the story would go in as Freud wanted it.

I have never seen a woman so driven by ambition and yet so lacking talent. What she does have – in abundance – is an ability to get what she wants. Mainly from men. And they would do whatever it took to please her – including phone hacking.

Occasionally she would come back from No 10 with an ‘exclusive’ story. But usually, they weren’t real exclusives: the story had been agreed in advance and generally showed the PM or the governing party in a favourable light. A Sun or News of the World exclusive in the old days would have terrified No 10.

And no one was better at handling Rupert Murdoch than Rebekah. When she was with him, she would do everything for him. She would make sure his glass was topped up, grab the right people at receptions for him, keep those who he didn’t want to see out of reach, open doors for him. Everything.

That is why he has gone to such inordinate lengths to protect her. Some would say him prioritising saving her as opposed to the News of the World is insanity.

She is like a daughter to him. And as he has grown older and more frail, he has become closer to and more dependent on her.

People constantly ask: ‘Why hasn’t Murdoch been tougher on Rebekah?’ The answer is not as complex as it may appear. As the saying goes, there’s no fool like an old fool.

I wasn't. I was fact-checking Mike's claim that there was little or no coverage on Fox. How this (or noting that the folks who will get hurt worst by the NOW shutdown won't be the folks who did the hacking), in your mind, becomes 'leaping' to Murdoch's defense, is something I can't explain.

It's really blowing some steam in the UK

The former prime minister Gordon Brown has condemned "the most disgusting work" of News International journalists for using known criminals to invade the privacy and feelings of ordinary people, and accused the company of abusing its power for political gain.

Brown was reacting to revelations that News International journalists had attempted to access his voicemail and had obtained information from his bank account, his legal file and his family's medical records.

"I'm genuinely shocked to find that this happened. If I – with all the protection and all the defences that a chancellor or a prime minister has – can be so vulnerable to unscrupulous and unlawful tactics, what about the ordinary citizen?

"I find it quite incredible that a supposedly reputable organisation makes its money at the expense of ordinary people."

In an interview with the BBC and the Guardian, Brown confirmed that shortly after the birth of his son Fraser in October 2006, Rebekah Brooks, then editor of the Sun, telephoned his wife Sarah to say the paper had obtained details from the boy's medical records, revealing that he was suspected to be suffering from cystic fibrosis.

Brown said he had never wanted his children's lives to be the subject of publicity. "I have never talked publicly about Fraser's condition. Obviously we wanted to keep that private. As a parent, you want to do your best by your children."

Asked how he and his wife had reacted to the call, he said: "In tears. Your son is going to be broadcast across the media. Sarah and I were incredibly upset."

Brown said he had no idea how the Sun had obtained the information and questioned the paper's claim last night that this had been done legitimately.

"They will have to explain themselves. I can't think of any way that the medical condition of a child can be put into the public domain legitimately unless the doctor makes a public statement or the family make a statement.

"I don't know how it appeared. The fact is that it did appear. It appeared in the Sun."

He said he had known at the time that his bank account had been penetrated by the Sunday Times but had not understood that News International had relied on the help of criminals.

"I had my bank account broken into. I had my legal files effectively broken into. My tax returns went missing at one point. Medical records were broken into. I don't know how this happened.

"I do know that in two instances there is absolute proof that News International hired people to do this and the people who are doing this are criminals, known criminals in some cases with records of violence and fraud."

Of course it hasn't happened to Murdoch; he wouldn't allow it! He's at the base of all this shit; the guy in charge sets the tone and morality, and everyone else follows. Was talking about this to hubby and he passed it off, saying "nothing will change". Probably not; me, I'm having dreams of Murdoch and his whole empire being brought down...between him and the Koches, America is changing for the worse steadily...

You're probably right, which is all the more reason to push this to the fore, so that *MAYBE* we can force the issue before the courts and push them to rule on whether ANYONE has such a right in the first place.
