Mumbai Rocked by Multiple Bomb Blasts; 17 People Killed
July 13, 2011, 1:46 PM EDT

(Updates with death toll in first paragraph, analyst’s comment in fourth paragraph.)

July 13 (Bloomberg) -- Three bomb blasts hit Mumbai, killing at least 17 people, in the biggest attack on India’s financial capital since a November 2008 terrorist rampage.

The blasts occurred in the Dadar, Zaveri Bazar and Opera House neighborhoods, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said in a briefing in New Delhi today. The explosions injured more than 81 people, Prithviraj Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, told Times Now news channel.

India’s two largest stock exchanges that are based in Mumbai will function as normal tomorrow. The city of more than 18 million people is also home to Reliance Industries Ltd., which runs the world’s largest refinery complex, and Tata Sons Ltd. which controls the nation’s biggest business group by value. Today’s attack is the first in the city since Pakistani gunmen killed about 160 people in 2008.

18 million folks in Mumbai, but still, glad your colleague is fine.

The number of dead seems to have gone up and then back down, so not real sure what the real story is. Lots of injured, though. Just terrible.

I have to wonder if this is "militants", or actual military. Wasn't Pakistan's ISI linked to the last round of Mumbai bombings? Or is it some separate group of Pakistani nationalists or Kashmiri separatists trying to provoke an actual shooting war between the countries?

So far as I've heard, nobody has claimed responsibility, which is a bit odd in this kind of attack. Religious groups generally DO claim responsibility for such actions, often even before they're carried out.

Rap, I was worried when I heard they had targetted the gold market, as I know she likes to hang out there.

Pakistan is really just a rogue state, and its clear that the relationship between the military and terrorist groups is 'complex', to be kind about it.

While a lot of these terrorist cells are made up of naive young peasants, they undergo military training and provision with military gear, so who is responsible....?

Osama was housed right across the street of a Paki military college. Had 'no idea' he was there, at all.

Well, not really "right across the street", exactly.

But yeah, the total failure of them to catch him, he might as well have been in Tora Bora. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if they cared so little about Bin Laden's whereabouts that they dismantled their whole Bin Laden task force. ;)

I know where they can get a great deal on a "Mission Accomplished" banner, though!
