Ahhh, politics. Ain't it grand?
Quote:

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has long been a darling of conservative evangelicals, but shortly before announcing her White House bid, she officially quit a church she’d belonged to for years.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, and her husband, Marcus, withdrew their membership from Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota, last month, according to church officials.

The Bachmanns had been members of the church for more than 10 years, according to Joel Hochmuth, director of communications for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the broader denominational body of which Bachmann’s former church is a member.

The church council granted the Bachmanns’ request to be released from their membership on June 21, Hochmuth said.

The Bachmanns approached their pastor and verbally made the request “a few weeks before the church council granted the request,” Hochmuth said.

Bachmann had listed her membership in the church on her campaign site for congress in 2006. She lists no church affiliation on her campaign website or her official congressional website.

A similar request for membership is to transfer membership from one church to another within the denomination. But that does not appear to be the case with the Bachmanns, according to Hochmuth, who said that to his knowledge, the couple was no longer attending a church within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

Pastor Marcus Birkholz has been at the helm of Salem Lutheran Church for nearly three decades. When asked about the Bachmanns leaving the church, he said, “I’ve been asked to make no comments regarding them and their family.”

Bachmann was asked about her status with the church on Thursday at Reagan National Airport as she headed to catch a flight. When asked about her pastor, she asked, “Which one?” An aide quickly hustled her away, noting that they were late for a flight.

The Bachmann campaign declined to immediately respond to a request for further comment Friday.

Becky Rogness, a spokesperson in Bachmann’s congressional office, said the Congresswoman now attends a nondenominational church in the Stillwater area but did not know the name of the church or how long she had been attending.

Hochmuth said that, “My understanding of the situation was the timing of the request for release was far more coincidental than strategic.”

The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod has come under criticism from some Catholics for its views on the papacy, an institution that the denomination calls the Antichrist.

"We identify the Antichrist as the Papacy," the denomination's website says. "This is an historical judgment based on Scripture."

"We find no evidence of any bigotry on the part of Rep. Michele Bachmann," the statement continued. "Indeed, she has condemned anti-Catholicism. Just as President Barack Obama is not responsible for the views of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Rep. Bachmann must be judged on the basis of her own record."

Bachmann and Associates has faced accusations that it uses a controversial therapy that encourages gay and lesbian patients to change their sexual orientation.

In an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune published Friday, Marcus Bachmann did not deny that he or other counselors at his clinic used the technique but said they did so only at the request of a patient.

"Is it a remedy form that I typically would use?” he said. "It is at the client's discretion."

Huh.

Can you imagine if a Democrat were running for office and was unable to sufficiently prove that he was a "Christian"? Why, there'd be all kinds of outrage over such a thing!

She officially has no church now, eh?

So are her and her husband NOT licensed to "pray the gay away" any more?

Like woman, I am a mystery.

No lie, I used to live right across the street from that church. Never heard about any sort of "cure the gay" agenda going on in there though. Though if Bachmann was a member there, they must have been preaching something she agreed with.

Socialist and unashamed about it.

Erratum: The thread title doesn't quite jive with the posted article (or any of the others I've read). The brouhaha with Bachmann's ex-church is how it's anti-Catholic (Pope = antichrist). Her husband's clinic is the anti-gay place where they merrily pray the gay away.

It appears that, in Michelle's world, church is for bashing other religions, and hubby's business is for bashing other sexual orientations. (And he's paid by the govt to do it!)

Of course, she's found a bigger, better third option: politics. Not only can she bash lots of groups at the same time, she can push for legislation to make bigotry and ignorance the rule of the land!

This woman is almost as entertaining as SP. Almost.

I think gays have every right to be cured, just like anyone else.

Denying them healthcare is just wrong!

Oh, wait... curing them of BEING gay ?

Never mind.

Dan Savage, whom I admire, has accused the lisping Mr. Bachman of longing for the dong. If Mr. Bachman were gay, that would explain his choice of mate and church. There's no way to be sure, however, but doing the gay to him hard and seeing if he digs it, or weeps.

If gays can be cured, then gays can be made.

Neal Boortz likes to ask the " It's a choice " crowd when did THEY make their choice, to be gay or straight.

Funny to hear them " uh- uh " their way through that one.

Stewart took that one on this week. Um... meaning Mr. B's voice. And dancing style. Yep, it makes plenty of sense. Not saying that Mr. B is definitely closeted, because funny voice is such a bad stereotype of gayness and, in reality, the two do not equate. But such a denial of his own nature would certainly fit what I know of the man.

Sometimes I wish I could make a map of what's happened in these people's heads, the ones who can only convince themselves they are straight by villifying and going to war with homosexuality. Their gray matter must be especially twisty...

Anyway. In the theoretical world where Bachmann the Mr. is a closeted gay man, would Bachmann the Mrs. be a closeted lesbian?

Quote:

Bachmann has been questioned about her church’s beliefs for years and denounced their anti-Catholicism when she was running for Congress in 2006.
“It’s abhorrent, it’s religious bigotry,” Bachmann said then. “I love Catholics, I’m a Christian, and my church does not believe that the pope is the antichrist, that’s absolutely false.” She remained a member of the church for years after, but as Bachmann’s political ambitions got bigger, she began to distance herself. When she decided to run for president, Bachmann seemed to realize she could no longer belong to an organization that formally endorses intolerance.[emphasis mine]

So she's quitting the Republican Party and Tea Party as well?!

Bachmann doesn't need to be a closeted - or ANY kind - of lesbian. She's more likely the rejected and spurned straight woman who unwittingly entered into a marriage not realizing that she was simply a "beard", and is now very angry at all gays for it.

I used to work for a guy who got really into bodybuilding and working out, and went and got himself a professional trainer, who then became his "life coach", and who THEN wormed his way into the company as CFO, and even lived with the owner and his wife. The owner of the company acted not so much like someone with a new friend, but like someone with a new lover. Even his wife couldn't take it. She confided in me one time that she just freaking HATED this new guy. I told her I felt he was a con man, and my boss (her husband) was being taken on a ride. She said, and I quote: "I think it's worse than that. I think they're fucking faggots, and I think it's fucking disgusting." She divorced him a few months after I left the company, the company folded a month after that, but he and his new guy are still hanging out together! His ex is quite vehemently anti-gay, because she thinks one of "them" stole her man.

Michelle Bachmann's hatred strikes me as a similar kind of thing. It's as if she knows what her husband is, and where his proclivities lie, and she's disgusted by it because it's a rejection of HER. And he is disgusted with himself, and both of them try to pretend that they're something they really aren't: a happy straight couple.

But that's just my opinion.

I gotcha Kwicko. Makes plenty of sense. I should have seen it. Though, I admit that I was entertained by the idea of a former Bachmann lesbian lover coming forward... like the druggie gay male prostitute for that nutjob Dobson. Oh what fun it could have been!

Sadly, I've seen the kind of thing you're talking about more than once. I'll share one example: a very good friend (who I'm visiting next weekend yay! Love her!) is a serious body builder. You know those women you see on ESPN at 3 AM, with the big muscles and little bitty bikinis and long glossy hair and wicked dark tans? The ones who could snap you in two with a flex of their mighty pecs? She's like that, or was last I saw her, two years ago. Probably 5' tall and bench pressing 250 lbs. No shit.

Anyway, she once had this husband who was also a body builder, so cute and they seemed so good together. I thought so. Until they were getting divorced and she told me that he was a closeted gay guy who went after her so he could have a "guy" without actually being with a guy. Very creepy.

(Which opens a whole new can of gender issue worms. Did she deserve to be thought of as male, simply because her hobby was a "male" one? How far can one stray from stereotypical "woman" and still be considered a woman? And let me tell you, muscles aside, this woman is no XY. She's all XX. Female. She's a loudmouthed, energetic, man-liking, hetero chick, through and through. No dyke, not this one.

Not that dykes are bad. The best marriage I see in daily life are my lesbian buddies in Boston. They're working on making a baby right now. So cute!

Back to the body-builder. It really is a happy story, because she has a new man now who I've met once. I can't wait to see them again! I'm so glad she's finally with a man who allows her to be who she is, and loves her for the reality of her.

If only the religious right wing had any inkling of the power of this: be who you are. Love others for who they are. Differences are not bad, even when they make us uncomfortable. They are refreshing and mind-bending in a good way.

Back to Bachmann and how I imagine her - I'm bummed at how many people don't demand to be accepted as who they are, but live out a lie. "The church says that I should do what my man says, and honor his virility, and if he maybe isn't so virile and isn't so available, I guess I can get my MOM hormones running by taking in all these foster kids, and then - hey! - I can run for office and then I become mom and wife to the whole damned electorate... That should satisfy this hollow place in me, this dissatisfaction I feel every time I look at my husb...

"Nope. I'm not going to think about that! The preacher told me never to think about that, because it's all all right! I must remember that it's all all right. I must pray...

"mmm hosiah I am normal.

"Praise baby Jesus I am normal."

"Please praise ye gods, my husband and I are NORMAL!"

"Right?

(In case it's confusing, that was me fictioning MB's brain...)

Neat. I'm glad to see you guys having so much fun with this; I thought it was pretty weird, and pretty illustrative of politicians. I don't know about all of it--I'll definitely have to catch Stewart. Missed him, Colbert and pretty much any news this week...too depressing, too obsessive on one subject. But I'll just BET he had a ball!

How exactly does hubby's "cure the gay" clinic get money from the government? That one baffles me and my hubby both.

Mal4, Mal4, Mal4, goodie, goodie, goodie. You've been missed something awful...and I loved your "inside her head" monologue. Who knows, it might even be pretty accurate! Thanx for putting me straight about the title; I'll go to the other version and change it (I assume one still can?). I'm kind of new about all this shit; I just read about it and was amazed enough to check it out. Immediate reaction: "Whaaaa???" But tho' I UNDERSTOOD it right, I got the title wrong. Mea culpa.

I wonder what they do with bisexuals? No, I don't, it's obvious.

Raptor ; you've been almost civil, and even made good points, in this thread! But that we could clone that impulse. You're not one of the Bachmann sycophants? Must be Wulf, I tend to mix you up. I'm glad you have that much sense, anyway!

(oops, went back to original version, seems I can't edit at ALL over there, so I can't fix the title, sorry)

Not sure what all the fuss is about here Niki. All I've done was restate what Edmund Burke himself said...

"(W)hen bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

Which often is stated as...

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"

Though Burke probably never said that quote, directly.

So, on that, we seem to agree. As to what defines 'evil'...

" I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. "

I think most people on the board are civil, and arguments are generally misunderstandings or partisan. However, I haven't seen things turning personal recently around here, which is pretty nice.

As for closeted gay: You know, I can't imagine how hard that would be. I never had to deal with stigmas for having no interest in anyone, so all I had to do was chew a few people out now and then when they made assumptions. It was never really a secret with me.

But these people when they're in denial hurt a lot of people. So it's hard to be sympathetic there. Though it's also hard to be sympathetic to anyone who's been hurt who then goes on a "disgusting faggots" rant.

I hear ya. I personally wasn't surprised to hear they'd divorced, and I thought it reflected poorly on HER that she dealt with it in such a way, but I could kinda understand where she was coming from. For so many people, a rejection of them SEXUALLY comes across as a wholesale rejection of them in their entirety as a person, when such a thing is hardly ever the case. I know a great many people I love to talk to and interact with, but have no desire at all to have sex with. But it certainly doesn't mean I don't value them as PEOPLE!

There's a difference between saying that someone is cute/pretty and liking them as a person, and being INTERESTED, y'know what I mean?

Otherwise I'd be writing OC slash romances instead of being a shipper.

But, okay, Inara is about as close as I come to having a crush on a fictional character. IRL, I don't even really have girl crushes. There was one time I had a crush in kindergarten I guess, but it was still pretty platonic.
