"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

In late July 2010, Rep. Michele Bachmann’s then-communications director, Dave Dziok, told his boss that he planned to take a new job with the public relations firm Edelman.

Dziok had worked for Bachmann for two and a half years, a relatively long period by the standards of her office, and was leaving on good terms.

Staff turnover can frustrate any employer, but Bachmann responded more dramatically. Dziok’s departure triggered a debilitating medical episode that landed the congresswoman in urgent care.

“Within 24 hours she was in the hospital,” a former aide says.

Bachmann was admitted to a Washington, D.C. hospital on Friday, July 30, and released that same day. She flew home to Minnesota to recuperate, missing a scheduled campaign event with Sen. Roy Blunt.

It’s “nothing folks should worry about going forward,” Dziok told reporters at the time, refusing to specify why Bachmann had been hospitalized.

It was, according to three people who have worked closely with Bachmann, not an isolated event. (Bachmann signs ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ pledge, adds promise to defund Obamacare)

The Minnesota Republican frequently suffers from stress-induced medical episodes that she has characterized as severe headaches. These episodes, say witnesses, occur once a week on average and can “incapacitate” her for days at time. On at least three occasions, Bachmann has landed in the hospital as a result.

And before you hit me with the "partisan attack!" line, note that this comes from Tucker Carlson's right-wing website.

I can't imagine suffering migraines once a week. I get them once or twice a YEAR, and they are indeed debilitating.

On world news on NBC they said she does indeed have consistant migranes but that she uses medicine that keeps them from getting too bad/incapacitating. But who knows.

I've had about five migranes in my life, in two clumps of two and three when I was 13 and then when I was 19. My friend Beth used to have a lot of migranes in high school and college. Then she got depression during college and started taking medicine. The medicine has the depression stable and also an unexpected side effect was that it totally got rid of her migranes, she doesn't have them anymore.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I've worked with people who got regular migraines (or at least said they did) and I was always having to cover their shifts. Annoyed the piss outta me. I'm just saying, a president shouldn't need someone to cover shifts.
I've had one headache that could probably count as a migraine. I did have to request a dimming of the lights, but it didn't incapacitate me. My mom got them for awhile, but some hormone therapy sorted them out.

I've always been grateful I get few headaches, and never a migrane. It's not something I would wish on my worst enemy, from what I've read and heard from others who do have them. Ergo, reluctantly I have nothing to say about this subject except my sympathy goes out to her.

(Oh, and if she were ever to be elected President, we'd head for Canada which, thankfully, won't happen.)

BYTEMITE

They kinda feel like someone pulled out your eyeball and stabbed the socket with a knife, then centered an axe through the top of your head. You can often tell they're coming on by either doubled or suddenly blurry vision, or a numbing sensation that progresses in waves.

Trying to remain upright or focused on an activity during a migraine is not recommended, as it can induce nausea and vomiting, as well as falls from impacted sense of balance. Also be careful if you are prone to fainting spells.

A quick nap is often sufficient to correct the symptoms, but requires either exhaustion from the pain, or the ability to tolerate the pain enough so that sleep is possible.

The few times I get them, my migraines feel like someone just clubbed me at the base of the skull, and I become VERY sensitive to light and sound, and become pretty much unable to do anything except close the drapes, turn off the lights, and try to sleep.

found this quote over on CNN
Quote:

" but I'd like to be abundantly clear, my ability to function effectively … will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief," Bachmann said.

My ability to function effectively will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief?

Literally, effectiveness is a handicap to being President?

That's how the quote reads. Now, there is an ellipsis in there-- they cut something out of the quote. But what they cut is not SUPPOSED to be relevant, not SUPPOSED to change the meaning of what she said. And, of course, you can't trust the " lame-stream media", they might have distorted what she said to make her seem even dumber. And I'm sure that what she said, accurately quoted , is NOT what she meant; she meant something like, this medical condition will not affect my effectiveness, will not affect my ability to serve.

That's what Spin Doctors are for-- to explain why what someone said was not what they really meant.

Oh, well, maybe she had a PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION, and learned Public Speaking at a simple school, not one of those elitist places.

I'd say that's what the vice president is for - provided anyone's batshit enough to vote for this lunatic to begin with, that is one of the few things I'll not hold against her.

I get the damn things on occasion, and of course OTC painkillers are worse than useless, the only effective method I've ever had is balancing whether the hangover from drinking myself insensible is gonna be any worse, and usually the hangover wins out as the lesser evil.

Funny thing about the light/noise sensitivity though, since I work at night and in a very quiet site, I kinda deliberately provoke a low-end version of that while in "work mode", which is one reason I really can't stand noise, light or crowds when doing the job.
Which is the excuse I keep foisting on Elliot, cause I don't wanna hurt his feelings by calling him and his DHS/TSA grunts a bunch of nazis, even though they are.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I always thought she had a batshit crazy look about her, which I attributed to the batshit crazy ideas flying around in her head. But maybe it's her headaches.

Zat better? I agree that the removed excerpt isn't really pertinent, but also agree that it appears to be a stronger statement with it out. She went on to say, "Since entering this campaign for the presidency, I have maintained a full schedule between my duties as a congresswoman and as a presidential candidate traveling across the nation to meet with voters". Hey PR, my mom, for about a year when I was young, used to get bad migranes too, I think it might have been hormonal with her, but it evened itself out which was good, a phase her body was going through. How common is that?

Or maybe it's the batshit crazy ideas flapping around in there that give her the headaches...

At any rate, it gives her the perfect excuse to not have to have sex with her husband, which I'm sure he appreciates.

Migraines are fairly common in women going through menopause. The fluctuating estrogen levels cause dilation of blood vessels, and those dilated blood vessels can put pressure on the brain, causing the headaches. This is part of what makes caffeine a generally good treatment for migraines, as epinephrine causes peripheral blood vessels to constrict some. There are, of course, many things besides menopause that can cause this dilation of blood vessels, but it is a fairly common symptom of the hormonal change.
As an aside, frequent migraine sufferers may be at an increased risk for stroke, as dilated blood vessels give clots better potential access to the brain. A good reason to be sure and keep one's caffeine intake up! (I'm only half joking.)

Thanx, Niki.

I still find it incredible that the fact that she's competent will not affect her ability to be President.

That's not what she meant, as far as I can see and in this context; she is saying her "ABIBILITY to function effectively" as in whether she's able to function effectively or not. It's all semantics, but you're right, with the intact statement, she's saying her ability to function effectively HAS NEVER been impeded, so wouldn't impede her ability to govern. I might snark that there are about a thousaund OTHER things which would affect her ability to govern, but that wasn't the question.

But I see your point; nonetheless, she is the one saying she's competent and that even with migranes she'd function effectively. Her staffers seem to be of a somewhat different opinion. Given all I've read about migraines, I question that (it certainly does affect others in such a way as to affect their competence), given how the migraines have affected her and caused her to be unable to function. That's just my opinion, and the whole thing is a tempest in a teapot to me anyway, Pawlenty is using it to score political points.

The sad thing is, she'd have to be elected for us to find out if they impede her ability to govern, and then it would be just a teeny bit late. The fact is also that we've had other Presidents with conditions which might (or have) affect their ability to govern, so it goes both ways.
