You go to jail if you refuse to buy private medical insurance, but when Obama does it he gets free icecream on YOUR jet airliner.

The USPS is going out of business because of the Union pension plans and contracts. They are no longer competitive in the market, considering UPS, Fedex, DHL etc.. provide more timely shipment and a higher rate of actually recieving the mail/items.

Part of the issue is that they can't afford the exorbitant pre-funding payments to the pension plans/insurance that were "negotiated" for with corrupt politicans and union leaders. It's a wonder they made it this long.

This really has nothing to do with President Obama.

It becomes a bit tough for the USPS to compete if they have to have every rate increase approved by Congress. UPS and FedEx don't have to do that.

By the way, didn't DHL go belly-up in the U.S.? I know they filed for bankruptcy back in 2008, and my local DHL rep hasn't been seen or heard from since. No loss, though, since their rates were horrid.

So taxpayer money doesn't fund the USPS, but Congress has to approve any rate increases. USPS won't be going away without changes to the Constitution, by the way, because they are mandated into existence by that document.

And for those who think FedEx and UPS are much better options, I'd challenge you to try to send a letter to Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, or Puerto Rico for $0.44 with either of those companies. For that matter, try sending a letter ANYWHERE for that price with those two. Best of luck to you.

USPS has its niche where it's a viable option. Priority Mail tends to be as good as, or better than, UPS Ground service for much of the country. Flat-rate mail is significantly cheaper than either FedEx or UPS for small residential deliveries (I ship a few dozen small flat-rate boxes every day, for $5 each anywhere in the U.S., while the average UPS charge for them would be $9-12 each), and USPS can be amazingly cheaper than either of the other two on international orders.

People who slag the USPS on a regular basis tend to be somewhat uninformed or inexperienced, or both.

ETA: By the way, in the past two years, I've had ONE package that was sent USPS that didn't arrive (it went to Canada, and disappeared once it hit customs, which was incidentally a UPS brokerage house in Canada), and ONE that was heavily damaged upon arrival (that one went to New Zealand). UPS nets me about one damaged package per quarter, and a couple "lost" packages per year. The "lost" packages are the ones they tend to leave on someone's doorstep without getting a signature confirmation for delivery as they're required to do.

Not likely to happen anytime soon, Riona. As I said above, they're actually explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, and Congress is given the power to establish Post Offices and Post Roads.

But according to PN's post, Obama is a tea partier. Well, better than, actually. He actually IS making the government smaller. The tea partiers just talk a lot about it, and then don't do anything. Kind of like their whole campaign on "Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!"
