"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Wow. Just wow.

Quote:

With the prospect of former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum running for president (Iowa is nice this time of year), former Bush adviser Mark McKinnon is scared by the thought of such a possibility.

“Santorum represents, in my view, much of what is wrong the in the Republican Party. While I disagree with him on some fundamental issues, I am much more concerned with his lack of character.”

And then there is this little known tidbit: “I’m a pretty tolerant guy, but beyond his ideology, some of Santorum’s behavior is just a little bizarre. For example, Santorum has six children. In 1996, he had son born prematurely who lived for only two hours. He and wife brought the child home and introduced the dead infant to the rest of their children as ‘your brother Gabriel’ and slept with the body overnight.”

Indeed, the Washington Post reported this in 2005.

Upon their son’s death, Rick and Karen Santorum opted not to bring his body to a funeral home. Instead, they bundled him in a blanket and drove him to Karen’s parents’ home in Pittsburgh. There, they spent several hours kissing and cuddling Gabriel with his three siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1 1/2. They took photos, sang lullabies in his ear and held a private Mass.

Actually that isn't such unheard of behaviour. I know some hospitals here were encouraging some similar types of behaviour awhile ago. While it seems a little out there, it is supposed to help with grieving a new born mortality, where you really haven't had time to get to know the poor little mites before they die. I think mostly it happened in the hospital, where parents were encouraged to dress and hold their dead infants.

Sad story any way.

I also think that is kind of a mean story to be putting around for political purposes. It's about a family's private grieving over what must have been a devastating loss. Does every element of people's personal lives have to be scrutinised and criticised just because they are involved in the political arena? This is ugly stuff that indicates an ugly system.

Wish Obama had done the same thing, with Osama Bin Laden...

Taken him home, kissed him, and slept the night with his body?

Kinda creepy. Seems more like the kind of thing Michele Bachmann's hubby might go for.

I agree with Magon's, how a family grieves is their own business, it isn't something that should be trotted around in an election. Sure it seems a lil' odd to do that, but it isn't my place to say what is and isn't okay when it comes to grief like that. When my mother birthed her first child, a still born, they did dress him and did take a picture, so there would be some record of him, there is a piece of me that wants to see that picture but I've never asked. My parents didn't do all that stuff that the Santorums did, but what if they had? I wouldn't think any less of them. The baby died in the womb but my mother still had to birth him, I can't imagine how hard that would have been, then she lost her mother that same year.

I am of two minds about it - in my beliefs there really isn't any deathrites or anything cause the instant the Ka flees the body, what's left is just an empty shell, litter, as it were, and generally regarded accordingly.

That said, I do try to respect the beliefs of others, particularly in this regard, and stuff like what's mentioned here is not that uncommon a way to express grief and find closure over a life that should have been, but wasn't - which strikes a little closer to home than ya might realize cause I was supposed to be a stillborn, I just happened to be a stubborn jackass apparently from the moment of conception.
(Yay, stormtrooper sperm, what a visual!)
*hums the imperial march*

Now if they kept it in a jar like Barbie Bush, now THAT might be a little weird, but even that I am of almost the same mind Kaylee is about the "alien" (aka cow fetus) in The Message - "Never even got born and made it into showbiz..."
*shrug*

People do what people do, I had one ex threaten to freeze dry my arse and put it on display like one of them wooden indians on her porch as proof that I was dead...

I know what you mean about the soul being gone Frem, a good family friend of ours wants her body taken to the forest and just put there so the animals can find sustanance in it, since she isn't there anymore and doesn't need it anyways. That's sort of illegal though so she knows she won't get her wish, I think she likes the idea of helping nature be.

A jar? Okay that's kind ofweird, but it isn't my place to judge that, but seriously I'd totally not do that.

There are places that are doing this legally now. And it's been my wish since I was old enough to understand the concept of death. When I'm gone, I'm GONE - no use or sense locking this decrepit body in a sealed crypt, and buzzards gotta eat same as earthworms, and I'd much rather be efficiently recycled without the waste of real estate. My energy will be gone, but what's left - the physical meat and bones part - will provide sustenance for countless animals and plants, so let 'em have at it.

It may also have something to do with fear of being buried, fear of burning (cremation), fear of drowning (burial at sea), etc. Most people have no real fear of lying in the grass. ;)
