Hello,

I am confused, Wulf. I thought you were lauding this as a good thing. You wait for someone to agree with you and then change stance?

The current President cut the budget for NASA. Did he not? So now, NASA is fighting back by creating new projects that will push us all further.

Hello,

I'm pretty sure that in the article you provided, NASA said they were fulfilling the president's mandate. Including doing more with less. And they say they are succeeding. It's all very exciting.

So, with NASA doing what the president asked them to do, within the budget the president gave them, you see it as 'fighting back?' It seems more like they're 'following orders.' Successfully, too.

""This launch system will create good-paying American jobs, ensure continued U.S. leadership in space, and inspire millions around the world," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "President Obama challenged us to be bold and dream big, and that's exactly what we are doing at NASA. While I was proud to fly on the space shuttle, tomorrow's explorers will now dream of one day walking on Mars."

Way to go Obama! All Liberals will be happy with this news. "See!"

Cause yanno, I want OFF this rock.

Shit, buy me a ticket to Gliese 581d, we got signals, we got habitable zone, I'd say good chance of natives, and if not, finders keepers!

America loves a winner!

I think an honest debate on the Fed Govt's role in peaceful space exploration is always in order.

Knowledge for the sake of knowledge, is always a +, especially if we can determine any meteors coming our way, years or decades in advance, to help save all life on Earth ? Seems worth while to me. But there's so much OUT there, it's impossible to think we can fund every conceivable project w/ govt $.

Are we going back to the moon? Or mars ? If so, why? It'd better be more than just to say " Look Ma! We did it ! " . Because losing nearly 60,000 US lives fighting in 'Nam, while setting foot on the Moon, didn't seem to sync all that well w/ the American public, or the rest of the planet.

I think perhaps the problem is that you are assuming that Wulfie read the whole article.

Eh, yeah, point about the moon landing contrasted with Vietnam.

But if we do want to colonize space and other planets, then we kinda have to take baby steps about it. Test things out carefully before we commit to a trip of that length and a landing.

*mutters* We BETTER want to colonize space and other planets... *shakes fist at TPTB if they try to stop us*

And further on the 'Nam and the Moon landing point..I don't want to come off as sounding like David Drumlin, contending with Elanor Arroway. I'm definitely more of the latter. But it's a high wire act, where pragmatic science has to balance with the desire to do EVERYTHING, when it comes to moving forward, but with finite resources.

Of course, in the end, Ellie found her $, and her prize, and it all worked out for the best.

Yes, but of those two things - Viet Nam and the Moon race - which one got its funding cut first?

Maybe we should cut the war funding first. NASA's budget, as a percentage of the budget, has been slashed pretty much nonstop since 1966, when it was less than 4.5% of the federal budget. Under Bush, it got down to 0.56% of the budget. From what I've seen, Obama actually raised NASA's budget, which I'm sure will bring howls of "AAAAAGHHHHH! HE'S INCREASING SPENDING! COMMUNIST! SOCIALIST! MURDERER! ZOMG!" from the righties among us.

Not that such inconvenient truths will ever sway Wulfie from his strongly-held, wrongly-held beliefs, of course...
