Hello,

I was recently reading some of Chuck Lorre's vanity cards from the Big Bang Theory, and came across this. I thought it was funny, and decided to share it with my fellow forumites.

Maybe we are fighting the wrong political battles?

As best as I can tell, life is intolerable. Oh, not always of course. A case can be made for all the big wonders and little blessings and blah, blah, blah. But when you really boil it down, our entire existence rests on a few really ugly premises. First, life, and by that I mean the big life, life with a capital L, must ingest other life in order for it to remain life. Or, put another way, in order to witness the miracle of creation, we must continually eat, and then poop out, a little bit of that miracle. Second, one of the charming side effects of sentient life is emotional pain. The fact that dead and fermenting plant life creates alcohol - a terrific anesthetic for emotional pain - might cause one to think that this is, by nature, a compassionate universe. Think again. Keep dulling that pain with booze and you wind up, if you're lucky, in a church basement sharing your tears with complete strangers. If you're not lucky, you wind up on a waiting list for a motorcyclist's liver. And finally, there is the ever-present knowledge of death. In order to "more fully appreciate the gift of life," we all get to ponder a violently sudden or slow and agonizingly painful descent into oblivion -- after which our beloved bodies turn into the stuff of nightmares. Which brings me back to my original premise: life is intolerable. But rather than go gently into that creepy night, I've decided to start a petition to protest the fundamental conditions of existence. I know it's not much, but it's a start. And damnit, I'm just the guy to do it! The petition is available at chucklorre.com. Sign on now and make your voice heard before you're dead and your vocal chords are being eaten by a swarm of disgusting bugs.

I have long believed that part of our problem with resolving race issues in America is our inability to accurately name what we are. Aside from the occasional Johnny and Edgar Winter, there are no white people. Any child with a box of crayons can tell you that white people are, in fact, beige. The sickly ones are gray. Following this crayon logic, one can easily see that there are really no black people. They are brown. Or perhaps raw umber. Or maybe burnt sienna. Frankly, every time I hear someone comment on America's first black president, I can't help thinking, "No, he's not. He's more like caramel." Which is why I think we should all get in the habit of calling each other what we really are. How can you racially slur a man by calling him "beigey" or "umber?" The answer is you can't. Because that's exactly what he is. The melanin doesn't lie. Buy a box of Crayolas and see for yourself. We are all members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Can I hear a kumbaya?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.


To be quite honest, people manage to be racist and still very accurate about color. There was a whole gradation of color in South Africa... very scientific... Same as in Haiti. And black people in the USA know that it is much better to be high (social standing) yellow (golden-skinned) than blue-black. In fact, criminal sentences in the USA are directly correlated to skin color, for equal crimes. The darker the skin, the worse off you will be in a court of "law".

I know you are trying to lighten up (so to speak!) the topic of racism, but this is not the answer, seriously OR in jest!

Racism has nothing to do with the color of the skin, or shades of color. The Tutsi vs Hutu conflict will demonstrate that much.

Racism is about US vs. THEM, distilled to a childish recognition of some physically (often inconsistently) identifiable feature.

Underlying the universal US vs. THEM conflicts is class. I believe, racism, at the root, is simply disguised classism. So is sexism or religious bigotry for that matter. People who have like to ascribe negative characteristics to people who have not, the better to keep them as have-nots with. Conversely, the have-nots then ascribe negative characteristics to the haves, the better to challenge their power with.

From what I heard those two groups of people weren't very distinct at all, the distinction hadn't come about until about 100 years before? I could be wrong, but that's what I heard.

I thought Anthony's race post made sense. Its true Obama has as much European in him as he does African, he's got half and half, just because one is visually more prominant than the other doesn't mean it counts for more or less. I always found that perplexing because I suspect that Halle Barry has more European ancestry in her than African, or at least half of each, but she's still called "black". I always thought the words we use for skin color are weird. Puffy clouds are white and the deep ocean is black, but skin isn't either, with the exception of albinism, which can happen to any ethnicity by the way.

As for the death one, all I can say is that I love the Big Bang Theory, one of my favorite shows and definitely my favorite sit com.

Well, it's eastern tribes versus western tribes and distinguishing traits among even those.

Tutsi are generally taller and skinner with very angular faces. The Europeans favoured them for that reason, thinking that the tribe was more full of grace (more like Europeans) than their counterpart in the other tribe. That lead to the Tutsi, a racial minority, being the power in Rwanada and VERY oppressive, until the Hutu took over and retaliated. And the tensions have escalated ever since.

That's not to say that there hasn't been blending that makes most of the tribal identifications pretty pointless, however.

When Europeans first arrived in Rwanda, they found a complex and well organized semi- feudal society with a strong monarchy (Melvern, 5). In order to effectively control Rwanda, the Belgian colonialists issued out identity cards in 1933, "arbitrarily [classifying] the whole population as Hutu, Tutsi or Twa" by measuring qualities such as height, length of nose and eye shape. During Belgian rule, Tutsis were favored for all administrative positions and Hutus were actively discriminated against.



During the Rwandan genocide, the only thing I could do to "help" was help a Rwandan-American professor design a website to help publicize the news. He was a Hutu married to a Tutsi. This is pretty much the story he told me too. Also, my husband, who was actually in Rwanda the day of the genocide, tells me the same.

I knew it. And that is the most bizarre thing about the situation. I mean, its bizarre to want to kill everyone in a tribe or ethnicity to begin with, but when that tribe or ethnicity are basically not any different and the difference is imposed on them by outside forces it is just plain weird.

Well, more of a predictable cycle of self-destruction, as most examples of malicious European meddling tends to be.

I was thinking today about the original subject of this thread, and it occurs to me I'm not really sure I believe in the concept of death. And not in a "afterlife" sense, but in a purely repetition of history and natural cycle and reuse of genetics and chemicals and physical sense.

I see death by itself as just another facet of life. Violent and wrongful death is something else, but only something that concerns me when it might affect other people. Of all the things I am anxious or paranoid about, my own death is not something I fear or resent.

Well death is indeed inevitable, it will happen to all of us and there's nothing we can do to stop it. My wish is that everyone could live a full meaningful life in which they're able to make the choices they need to make for their good and for the good of humanity. Every life doesn't have to look the same, nor should it. It is sad when someone's life feels like it got cut short, but again its just one of those inevitable things, it will happen to some, others will get a good long time. I guess we've all got to make good choices _now, use our time well _now.

Well, yes and no.

Right now, somewhere, is a child going to sleep without a blanket. They are cold, hungry, alone, and have never known things like Ipads, interwebs, AC, or clean water.

But.

They are going to sleep, and tomorrow will wake up. Their first thought might be how to get food, or water... and they are going to fight.

They are going to fight to get food. To get water.

While we here argue about the morality of OWS, or the Tea Party... there is that kid trying to live another day.

We, Americans, are so spoiled.

Wulf, this is sorta what I meant when I said , in the past, that life is unfair . More accurately, the Universe is unfair.

I mean, we can try to organize our lives, our society in a kind and supportive manner, which promotes all the qualities we want, and gives as many the best chance of not just surviving, but succeeding. But regardless of our plans and intentions, there are forces well beyond OUR control which will come into play. Be it the unintended consequences of something we do here on Earth, or the meteor that falls from the sky one day, and turns a Tuesday into armageddon.

Which isn't to say we shouldn't try, but just so we understand, that the odds, they are agin us. Look around. Earth is ( so far ) the only place we know of which harbors life. It's the lone house out on the vast prairie with the lights on. And as Kaylee says... 'it can get awfully lonely out there in the black '

I have wrestled with the "What's the point of living" question for a long time, all my life really.

Recently, I finally found an answer that makes sense to me. An answer to the question, "Why bother living?"

A lady who runs a rape shelter for orphans in the Congo said, "You can't help if you're dead." She means, you can't help anyone else if you're not alive. You have to live to give. So others can live.

What's the point of their living, so they can give.

Maybe it doesn't make sense to anyone else. But life suddenly makes sense to me.

I'm still flying in 2021. How about you?


Every day is tinged with pain. Physical pain.
I have a wife who loves me,so I don't complain to her.
I have children and grandchildren who complain to me about everything from money to wanting an Elmo DVD. So, I keep my pain to myself.
You, however, I don't know.
Some of you are like me. Waiting for that moment in the day where the pain lets up enough so that you can breathe easily.
There are over the counter pain medications that help.
A prescription would probably solve my problem, but I'll be damned if I'm going to become an addict to pain meds (Because I know I would!) and lose that part of me that lets me lay my head on a pillow at night and go to sleep.
Muscle aches and joint pains happen to everybody. I guess I just manage it my own way.
So, my life at least, is tolerable.
Loving family, in spite of heaping their personal pains onto mine, helps get me through.
I'm tolerating a bit of pain right now as I type these words.
But as to LIFE being intolerable?
Please.
Learn to distract yourself from whatever pains you.
I stopped watching the news at the suggestion of a friend and I found that much of my worry vanished.
You'll find a way to tolerate life.
You're you, after all. You don't take crap off of anybody. Especially life.

I think that maybe having the pain, physical or emotional, as I must endure every day, strengthens some people's resolve to find the ecstacy in order to get through the agony. I'm thankful every day for the good things in my life, which are somewhat like yours, family, friends, the beauty of the earth, the fact that I do get to do fun things with those I love, creativity, goals and dreams, doing things that fulfill me, helping others. Sometimes its really hard though to see that when you're feeling like luh suh though. Today has been okay for me though and I want to live for a long time so I can do all the things I love inspite of all the things I hate.

Know what was the BEST thing in Transmet?? That pic that says "Political canvassers meet resistance downtown..." and then "They say they like Politicians, but couldn't eat a whole one.... Political canvassers apparently keep better and mature nicely under the floorboards" Still makes me giggle....

The only way I get through my day is by being as tough-ass as life has been at times on me. And by having a really wacky, morbid sence of humor

Too bad Jean Luc isn't a few years younger, I have faith in his ability to act, but acting 50 again would be a stretch...

I had heard they REALLY REALLY wanted Tim Roth to do it. I like him too, but yanno Spider walks around naked quite a bit, and it's gonna be hard enough to clean up for ANY kind of release. Tim Roth naked?? Unh unh...

I think Spider oughta be black, him hanging out with white chicks all the time would make more sense (oh no she didn't) and could make the glasses look good.

Of course, it doesn't carry as well without the visuals of Spider progressively zerking out and climbing on the table to shout down from on-high while his assistants kind of flip out.... heheheh.

I dunno who'd be good for Channith, but remember she's REAL tall and built pretty strong, curves notwithstanding, but I got the PERFECT suggestion for Ylena...
Michelle Rodriguez - she's the right size and build, and her disposition both on and off stage is as suited to the part as anyone alive.

I was thinking about it last night, and I remember when I first read the monstering rant.(2003ish?) I remember wanting to BE a journalist for all of about 30 seconds, then I realized I would get in a lot of trouble, and consistently,hah.

Even if ya read it a dozen times there is something you still haven't seen. I gotta wonder what is really really hidden in there...

There is several people in Spider costumes if ya google images, btw...

I think we could still squeeze Patrick Stewart in, as Ylenas dad - I suspect he'd be better for that part, in fact.

I thought about the notion of Spider not necessarily being any particular race, and you know who sprang to mind right off ?

Ice-T, who is, IMHO, a far better actor than he ever was a musician, although no one ever seems to credit him for it, and he can pull off a really bonkers-level anti-authoritarianism and paranoia that just fits Spiders demeanor so well, and he has the rage naturally...
Picture in your mind, for just a moment, HIM delivering that "Monstering" rant.
