"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain reportedly made another gaffe today while campaigning in Miami, asking people at the famous Versailles Restaurant what the Cuban word is for "delicious."

Fox News, among others, has a videotape of Cain's visit to the cafe, which is a perennial campaign stop for politicians. Cain can be seen on the tape sampling strong Cuban coffee and a croqueta, a deep-fried delicacy filled with ham.

Asked how he liked his snack, Cain can be heard asking, "How do you say 'delicious' in Cuban?"

Cubans speak Spanish.

Should we tell him about Brazil, or just let him figure it out on his own?*

Meanwhile, he also insisted that didn't need to know anything about foreign policy.

Hey, look how well it worked out for Bush!

Quote:

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain defended his foreign policy knowledge following a disastrous editorial board interview where he struggled to answer a question on Libya.

"I'm not supposed to know anything about foreign policy. Just thought I'd throw that out," he said to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reporter while on his campaign bus on Monday, the afternoon after his interview with the paper's editorial board.

* Portuguese. Not Spanish. Not Brazilian. Although when informed that we were getting reinforcements in Iraq and that they were sending in forty Brazilians, Bush was said to have responded, "That's great - how many's in a brazillion?"

How many's in a Brazilian, :) that's funny.

But yeah, his intellectual prowice has never impressed me. None of theirs does. Oh for the days of orators, or even bards, that way when they make up stuff we'd at least enjoy hearing it. :)

The hype and hyperbole over the minor gaffs by the media with some, but then to completely ignoring nearly identical faults by others, is a clear bias here.

There's nothing that Cain or any Republican has done which varies measurably from what any Democrat has done, time and time again. Selective grandstanding over the faults of some, but not others, seems to be the norm here.

Mispronounces 'corpsman' three different times, on two different occasions. Our Commander OF chief ( his words ) can't even get this right.

It's corpsman, Mr. President. Not corpse - man.

Well, a dialect of Spanish.

So the pronunciation of "delicioso" or "regalado" may vary between Cuban and other versions of Spanish.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I don't take that one very seriously, actually. I'm not sure many candidates would have known otherwise (especially this year!) and it's a minor thing. He's given us so much better material...eh.

I do find it amusing, however, that virtually every time one of the Republican clowns does something stupid, funny or wrong, Raptor has to immediately run in and post something Obama's done that's stupid, funny or wrong. Obsession is a sad thing to live with. Tough to be him.

And Niki, what I find funny is how every time Obama makes a gaff, the MSM ( and like minded myrmidons here ) completely ignore it, or downplay it as much as possible. However, when any Republican makes the slightest misstep, it makes headlines.

Now, why would you think that might be ?

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

There are actually enough differences between Cuban Spanish and Mexican Spanish that my father once inadvertently insulted a Mexican by using words that have an unfortunate meaning in Mexico.

Once the Spaniards colonized a place, the language in that place continued to evolve outside the prime influence of the mother country. Partly this was due to isolation, and partly due to the influence of native languages.

So it's not as bad a gaffe as one might think. There are actually several words that have different meanings or common usage in Cuba versus Spain. Never mind the peculiarities of Castillian Spanish pronunciation.

Anthonyt, that happens with any language. I think it was Churchill who said that the British and Americans were two peoples separated by a common language. I know from experience that the word 'bum' means something quite different on the other side of the pond.

Same goes for 'fag', 'shag' and 'fanny' pack, among others.
